China's Sunrev to invest $200mln in solar component industrial complex in Egypt's Sokhna
Egypt - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly witnessed on Wednesday the signing of a contract to establish an integrated industrial complex for the production of solar energy components in Ain Sokhna's industrial zone, part of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE). The project will be developed by Chinese firm Sunrev Solar. The contract was signed by Cao Hui, Managing Director of TEDA, and Qi Fei, Managing Director of Sunrev Solar, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir, and Chairperson of SCZONE Walid Gamal El-Din. The project will involve the construction of two integrated factories in its first phase: one for producing solar cells and another for solar modules, each with a capacity of 2 gigawatts. The second phase will focus on localising the production of key raw materials—such as silicon ingots and wafers—completing the full solar component value chain. Prime Minister Madbouly highlighted the strategic advantages of SCZONE in attracting diverse investments, especially in renewable energy. He reiterated the government's commitment to localising new and renewable energy technologies and providing incentives to support their growth. SCZONE Chairperson Walid Gamal El-Din described the project as one of the zone's largest industrial investments in renewable energy components. Spanning 200,000 square metres, the project will see a total investment of $200m—$90m for the first phase and $110m for the second. It is expected to create over 1,800 direct jobs across both phases and generate annual export revenues of up to $300 million. The foundation stone will be laid on Thursday, with the first phase scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2026. Gamal El-Din emphasised that the project reflects the confidence of major international investors in SCZONE's business climate and supports the authority's broader strategy to localise advanced industries and integrate solar energy production chains—from raw materials to finished products. He reaffirmed SCZONE's commitment to providing all necessary support to ensure the project's timely execution. Sunrev Solar is one of the world's leading manufacturers of solar energy components. This investment aligns with Egypt's national strategy to transition to a green economy, promote clean energy industries, and advance the goals of Egypt's Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Strategy.

Waste management reform expands with private sector involvement: Egypt's minister
Egypt's Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, announced on Wednesday that the country's solid waste management system has witnessed significant progress in recent years, driven by close coordination between the government, parliament, and private sector. She revealed that Egypt's recycling rate has risen from 10% in 2018 to 37% in 2024, with plans to reach 60% by 2027. Speaking during a session of the Local Administration Committee in Parliament—chaired by MP Ahmed El-Sigini and attended by key ministers and officials—Fouad credited the Waste Management Law (Law 202/2020) as a cornerstone for introducing circular economy practices and expanding private sector involvement. 'When we began, there were only two private contracts in the recycling sector. Today, we have 36 contracts across the value chain—from collection and transportation to processing and recycling,' Fouad noted. She highlighted the growing role of the private sector in waste-to-energy projects, including landfill gas recovery and sludge-to-power generation. A government-approved feed-in tariff, coordinated with the ministries of electricity, housing, and local development, is expected to further incentivize investment in this area. Among the key projects mentioned were the landfill gas recovery initiative at the Salam landfill site and the sludge-to-energy conversion project at the Abu Rawash wastewater treatment plant. Addressing funding challenges, Fouad called for the full activation of financing mechanisms embedded in the law, including allocations from property taxes, surpluses from the Local Development Fund, and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes. She pointed to the launch of Egypt's first EPR initiative in February, initially targeting single-use plastic bags and eventually expanding to packaging materials and metal products. These measures, she said, are expected to provide a consistent revenue stream for the waste management system. Fouad also highlighted the financial turnaround of the Waste Management Regulatory Agency, which has become an economic authority and recorded a surplus of EGP 45m. The minister reviewed progress in the signing and execution of waste collection and recycling service contracts across Egypt and addressed critical infrastructure needs in Giza and Qalyubeya governorates. Committee Chair El-Sigini congratulated Fouad on her recent appointment to a prominent international environmental post and praised her leadership in tackling Egypt's longstanding waste challenges. 'Parliament has been a committed partner in this journey since 2015,' he said, underscoring the importance of consolidating and expanding the gains achieved to ensure long-term sustainability.

Blue Line 'writing new chapter' in Dubai's real estate boom
Dubai Metro's Blue Line is having a profound positive impact on the emirate's real estate market, reshaping the real estate investments map and writing a new chapter in the city's real estate boom, said a leading Dubai-based real estate brokerage W Capital. In an in-depth analysis of the project, W Capital stated that the new Blue Line was in the heart of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 framework, which aims to enhance urban sustainability, improve quality of life, and support transportation infrastructure. This will directly impact vital economic sectors, most notably the real estate sector, it stated. The project will cover areas of high strategic importance, including Al Warqaa, Mirdif and Dubai Academic City, and will reach Jebel Ali Port via Dubai International Airport. This extensive coverage will contribute to connecting new residential communities to existing economic centers, stimulating the growth of mid-market and emerging neighborhoods and transforming them into attractive investment destinations, said the statement. W Capital pointed out that the establishment of a metro station near any area often leads to an immediate increase in surrounding property prices by 15 to 25%, boosting rents and demand in the medium and long term. "The Dubai Metro Blue Line project is not just a new means of transportation; it is a true economic and development engine that will reshape the real estate investment map in the emirate," remarked its CEO Walid Al Zarooni. "We have already noticed early investor activities, especially in areas such as Al Warqa, Dubai Academic City, and the vicinity of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, where demand for land and residential units has increased by more than 30% compared to last year," he stated. "These areas, which were previously considered relatively remote suburbs, are now the focus of investors interest due to their proximity to major metro stations, giving them a significant competitive advantage," he added. Al Zarooni pointed out the importance of proactive thinking in real estate investment. "We at W Capital encourage investors to make decisions based on a future vision, not just current conditions. Investing in areas connected to metro stations now, before the project is completed, gives investors the opportunity to benefit from value growth over time," he noted. "Similar examples existed with the launch of the Red and Green Lines previously, where we witnessed significant price increases once the stations were operational," he added. Al Zarooni said one of the most important transformations to be witnessed in the next few years is the market's move toward real estate decentralisation. "Instead of being concentrated in specific areas such as the city center, real estate distribution will begin to spread towards new hubs created by infrastructure projects, most notably the Blue Line," he explained. "This shift will not only reduce pressure on overcrowded areas, but will also create real opportunities for developers of medium-cost projects and contribute to providing diverse housing solutions that meet the needs of a wider segment of the population," he added. According to him, the Blue Line project represents a new phase of Dubai's smart urban transformation whose impact will not only improve mobility but also transform investment patterns and population and real estate distribution. "Investors must take advantage of this pivotal phase and adopt long term plans in line with Dubai's future development trends," he added.
