DENALI PARK, Alaska – Sled dog puppies at Denali National Park and Preserve can now be watched through their live Puppy Cam, National Park Service (NPS) officials announced on Thursday.
Raised at Denali Sled Dog Kennels, this year's litter includes five Alaskan husky puppies that were born less than a month ago on May 3.
Two of the pups are females named Squall and Storm, while the other three are males named Graupel, Dew and Fog. They were recently spotted via their Puppy Cam during their feeding time on Saturday.
Park officials said the pups' weather-themed names come from the diverse and dramatic ways water affects the weather.
Creativity Key When Training Alaskan Sled Dogs In Summer
As sled dog pups in every litter are named after a theme, the NPS noted that the names for this year's "Weather Litter" are in honor of a 100-year partnership between the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Kennels, in which mushing rangers of Denali collected and shared weather data with the weather agency.
The Denali Sled Dog Kennels is one of the oldest sled dog kennels in the U.s., the only sled dog kennel in the NPS for more than a century and the only dog sled kennel within the federal government, according to park officials.
"This special group of dogs is tasked with preserving unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations," the NPS said on their website.
It noted that the sled dogs perform necessary wintertime duties throughout Denali, such as giving park rangers the most effective means of patrolling the Alaskan wilderness during the long winters.
To provide the best sled dogs for these duties, the NPS said the Kennels look for certain qualities as they create each year's litters.
For example, some physical characteristics include long legs to help the pups move through the snow, compact paws to help prevent ice from building up between their toes and robust coats and tails to keep them warm.

Ideal characteristics also include personality traits, such as tenacity, love for pulling and working as part of a team and social skills that allow them to thrive when given attention by thousands of people who visit the kennels every summer.
The pups of the Weather Litter seem destined to have such ideal characteristics for being sled dogs, given their lineage.
Their mother, Merlyn, exhibited such traits. Part of a litter named after 9/11 Search and Rescue dogs, Merlyn has a sweet disposition and shows strong leadership with her team, the NPS said. They also added that she is most likely to smile with teeth.
Officials said their father, Drumlin, came from a well-respected kennel in Lake Minchumina, which lies north of Denali National Park.
The pups can be watched every day through their live Puppy Cam. Of note is their feeding times, which are displayed in their kennel at 11:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Alaska Standard Time.
Park officials said the Puppy Cam is made possible through their partnership with Alaska Geographic.

After the Washington Commanders finished practice Wednesday, veteran receiver Deebo Samuel and second-year cornerback Mike Sainristil kept working out together in a moment that encapsulated the state of the team. So, any way I can pick his brain about what receivers do to help myself, I'm going to do exactly that.' Coach Dan Quinn gushed about 'the environment that the players have created together.' 'We all know, to be at our best, it's gonna take all of us improving,' he said. 'If that's Mike asking Deebo a certain technique or vice versa, that's really where it takes place. 'We learn a lot from the NBA [in terms of] what that small group would look like, of a specific two or three players getting better on something,' Quinn said. Samuel said he knows there are things he needs to work on himself. His top goal of the offseason was 'being in better shape for sure,' he said, though he declined to detail what he focused on or how it would show up in his game. Trump's Travel Ban Could Shake Up International Sporting Events
The proclamation President Trump's signed this week banning travel to the United States by people from a dozen countries makes an exception for athletes, coaches and support staff for 'major sporting events,' including the World Cup and the Olympics. What qualifies as a major sporting event remains to be seen. Mr. Trump's proclamation declaring the ban, issued on Wednesday, says that the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, will determine which events can receive an exemption. A host of international sporting events are planned in the United States over the next months and years. While some of the countries on the ban list, like Chad and Yemen, are not traditional sporting powers, others, like Iran and Haiti, could well expect to send athletes to the United States for a range of competitions. Mr. Trump also imposed a lower level of restrictions on seven other countries, including Cuba, a strong player on the international sporting stage, and Venezuela. Decisions will have to be made quickly. The CONCACAF Gold Cup, the men's soccer championship for North American, Central American and Caribbean nations, begins June 14 and will be played at sites across the United States (and one in Canada). Haiti has qualified for the competition and is scheduled to play games in San Diego, Houston and Arlington, Texas. The Club World Cup, the world championship for men's club soccer teams, also begins June 14 in several U.S. cities. No team based in a country on the banned list has qualified, but the teams involved include players and staff members from all over the world. CONCACAF, which runs the Gold Cup, and FIFA, which runs the Club World Cup, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other events coming to the United States this year — including the under-19 softball World Cup and the world skateboarding championships — are less likely to be considered 'major' events. Major runway at Chicago Midway Airport gets $47 million makeover
A major runway at Chicago Midway International Airport is getting a multi-million dollar makeover, and the project broke ground Thursday. The Chicago Department of Aviation will be reconfiguring Runway 13C/31C to create two new taxiways, as well as doing some major repaving and installing new runway guard lights. The project has been in the works since 2022. As a part of the ongoing efforts to improve operations at Midway, the existing Runway 13L/31R, which the city said has been closed since 2023, will be permanently decommissioned as of June 12. When that happens, Runway 13C/31C will be redesignated as Runway 13L/31R. The goal of the project is for aircraft to be able to take off more efficiently, and reduce delays and traffic across the airfield. The groundbreaking event was attended by officials from the Chicago Department of Aviation and Mayor Brandon Johnson.
