India's star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant added yet another feather to his cap during the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Pant reached the landmark of 3000 Test runs during his gritty knock on Day 1, becoming only the fifth Indian wicketkeeper to achieve the feat. He got to the milestone in just 76 innings — second-fastest among all keepers after Australia's Adam Gilchrist, who took only 63 innings.
Pant got to the landmark with a boundary off Chris Woakes in the 81st over. He reached his half-century shortly after in 93 balls, continuing his brilliant Test comeback.
Here's the updated list of wicketkeepers with most Test runs: MS Dhoni – 4,876 runs in 90 Tests Mushfiqur Rahim – 3,515 runs in 55 Tests Kumar Sangakkara – 3,117 runs in 48 Tests (as WK) Sarfaraz Ahmed – 3,031 runs in 54 Tests Rishabh Pant – 3,001+ runs in 44 Tests*
Pant had entered the match with 2,948 runs and needed just 52 to cross 3000 — a target he reached with ease. Current Match Update
At the time of reaching his milestone, Pant was unbeaten on 53 off 93 balls, alongside skipper Shubman Gill, who was batting on 119*. India stood strong at 338/3 in 80.5 overs, riding on a commanding 117-run partnership between the two.
The solid platform puts India in a commanding position after England chose to field first at the toss.
With Pant now surpassing Sarfaraz and eyeing Sangakkara's mark, this Test series could prove to be a defining stretch in his red-ball career.

One of cricket's mavericks, the India wicketkeeper loves the difficult, high-risk shot. Even in the most nerve-shredding moments, Pant considers options other than the conservative choice. Advertisement For eight years, his swashbuckling play and attitude has been engaging or enraging India fans. Either way, he is unmissable. Another one of those moments arrived on Saturday against England during the test series opener at Headingley. For the 14th time in his test career, Pant batted into the 90s. Seven times previously he'd fallen in the 90s, making him one of the worst batters on percentage to convert 90s into hundreds in test history. Pant was mainly restrained on Friday to help India consolidate but he began Saturday on 65 and entertained. He made runs from ugly hacks and mistimed and unorthodox shots thanks to sublime wristwork and footwork. Advertisement He charged into the 90s with a falling-over ramp shot over fine leg to the boundary followed by a pulled six. Then he inched to 99. The common sense play to the hundred was a single but Pant hoicked a six over cow corner. As the Headingley crowd applauded, he celebrated his seventh hundred and third against England also in typical style, with a somersault in his pads, sans helmet. He featured in a 209-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill and was finally out for 134. For all the knocks on Pant's audacity — India great Sunil Gavaskar berated his soft dismissal from a failed scoop shot in December as 'stupid, stupid, stupid' on a radio broadcast — his way has been effective. Advertisement Pant has the most test hundreds for an India keeper, leaving behind Mahendra Singh Dhoni on six. He's the only visiting wicketkeeper in England to score more than one test century. He hit a six to complete a test hundred for a third time, all against England. For India, only Rohit Sharma (3) and Sachin Tendulkar (6) have raised centuries with a six as many times as Pant. Gavaskar and Pant turned the 'stupid, stupid, stupid' comment into a commercial. And on Saturday, when Pant got his century, Gavaskar acclaimed it on air by saying, 'Superb, superb, superb.' ___ AP cricket:

ENG vs IND 1st Test: Record says Rishabh Pant is now a better wicketkeeper-batter than MS Dhoni in SENA countries

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 21, 2025, 10:34 IST Rishabh Pant etched his name in the history books on Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley by surpassing MS Dhoni to become the most successful Indian wicketkeeper-batter in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions. The Indian vice-captain remained unbeaten on 65* at stumps, guiding India to a commanding 359/3 alongside skipper Shubman Gill. Pant needed just 50 runs to go past Dhoni's tally of 1,731 runs in SENA nations and did so in his trademark attacking style. His knock, laced with six boundaries and two sixes, marked his fourth half-century in England and solidified his reputation as a top performer in overseas Tests. The southpaw also became only the fourth Indian wicketkeeper to cross 3,000 runs in Test cricket, joining the elite club that includes Farokh Engineer, Syed Kirmani, and Dhoni. Pant now also holds the record for the most runs by an Asian keeper-batter in SENA countries. Pant, who currently has six centuries in Test cricket — the same as Dhoni — will resume Day 2 with an eye on claiming the record for most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper. ENG vs IND 1st Test – Day 1 recap: India dominated England with a solid top-order performance. Jaiswal set the tone with a century, followed by a 91-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who fell for 42 just before Lunch. Debutant Sai Sudharsan was dismissed for a duck, but Shubman Gill (127*) and Rishabh Pant (65*) added an unbeaten 130-run stand to take India to 359/3 at stumps. ENG vs IND 1st Test: Shubman Gill breaks ICC rule on captaincy debut by wearing black socks, could face fine

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 20, 2025, 22:59 IST India's new Test skipper Shubman Gill might have made headlines for his commanding half-century on Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley, but he also caught the eye for a different reason — one that could lead to disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Gill was spotted wearing black socks instead of the mandated white or cream in Test cricket. According to clause 19.45 of the ICC Clothing and Equipment Rules and Regulations, players must wear white, cream or light grey-colour socks in Tests. Gill's choice of black clearly breaches this protocol. The rule, based on MCC's recommendation, was enforced in May 2023 and is applicable across all ICC-sanctioned Test matches. Could Gill be fined? The final decision lies with match referee Richie Richardson. If deemed a Level 1 offence and found to be deliberate, Gill could be fined 10–20% of his match fee. If considered unintentional — for instance, due to an emergency like wet or unavailable white socks — he may escape penalty. Past incidents involving dress code violations: KL Rahul (2018) : Fined 10% for wearing a non-compliant helmet. : Fined 10% for wearing a non-compliant helmet. Chris Gayle (2016) : Fined 10% for using a black-bladed bat in BBL. : Fined 10% for using a black-bladed bat in BBL. Imam-ul-Haq (2019) : Fined 15% for using a bat with an unauthorised logo. : Fined 15% for using a bat with an unauthorised logo. Joe Root (2021): Fined 15% for sporting a rainbow logo during a Test. While minor, such violations still fall under ICC oversight and could lead to disciplinary action depending on the referee's interpretation. Despite the potential fine, Gill impressed with the bat, scoring 53* at Tea on Day 1 as India stood strong at 215/2.
