ESIC considering to open 10 new medical colleges across India
New Delhi, Apr 22 (PTI) Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is considering setting up 10 new medical colleges across the country to provide services to its subscribers in unserved or under-served areas.
The 10 new medical colleges have been proposed at Pune, Manesar, Kollam, Surat, Vishakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar, Asansol, Nagpur, Pandunagar and Margaon, Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told reporters here.
He also stated that these ten medical colleges will be set in addition to already approved ones in Andheri, Basaidarapur, Guwahati-Beltola, Indore, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Naroda - Bapunagar, Noida, Varanasi and Ranchi.
The ESIC in its 194th meeting has approved in-principle the establishment of 10 new medical colleges.
The minister further informed that ESIC is also working on converging with Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) to offer comprehensive, cashless medical care to over 14.4 crore beneficiaries.
The ESIC beneficiaries will be able to get their treatment done at PMJAY empanelled hospitals.
For ESIC beneficiaries, there will not be any cap on expenditure, he stated.
The ESIC is also formulating a policy to extend medical care through Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) in non-implemented and partially implemented districts, ensuring access to ESIC benefits for deemed beneficiaries in these regions.
In 2014, the minister stated that the scheme was implemented in 393 districts and is now extended to 691 districts (as on April 21, 2025). Among these 691 districts, 592 are fully notified while 99 are partially notified. As many as 87 districts are yet to be notified by the ESIC.
The minister noted that recently the scheme is notified in 8 districts of Nagaland and 15 districts of Uttar Pradesh, which will provide Social Security to 76,274 additional number of IPs (insured persons) and their families.
Further proposal for notification of one district each of Odisha & Uttar Pradesh, two districts of Maharashtra, six districts of Bihar is under process.

Covid-19 Update, June 10: The active Covid-19 tally in India on Tuesday neared the 7,000-mark, with states like Gujarat, Kerala and Karnataka continuing to report the most number of cases. The coronavirus cases have been steadily surging over the past few weeks, from just 257 on May 22 to nearly 7,000 on June 10. Over the past 24 hours, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India surged to 6,815, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health's Covid dashboard. India has been recording a steady rise in Covid-19 cases since the last week of May. India recorded as many as 324 Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, as per the health ministry's data. During this time, 783 people were discharged from hospitals or recovered. The death toll due to Covid-19 related causes have climbed to 68 since the start of this year, with three patients from Delhi, Kerala and Jharkhand succumbing to the viral infection in the past 24 hours. Two patients from Karnataka and one from Maharashtra also succumbed to the disease, as per PTI. In Delhi, a 90-year-old woman with co-morbidities died due to Covid-19. The patient had respiratory acidosis, Congestive Heart Failure (CCF) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), according to the health ministry data. This pushed Delhi's Covid-19 toll since January 1, 2025 to eight. Jharkhand reported its first death due to Covid-19 since the beginning of this year, as well as the current wave. A 44-year-old man, who had tested positive for the infection, died in Ranchi while receiving treatment at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences here. The man had aspirational pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, hypertension and hypothyroidism. Jharkhand currently has six active cases of Covid-19. Meanwhile, Kerala reported its 16th Covid-19 death this year as a 79-year-old man with co-morbidities succumbed to the infection. He had Type 2 diabetes among other diseases, as per the health ministry. Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 2,053. The state reported 96 new cases over the past 24 hours, while 255 people recovered from Covid-19 during the same period. Kerala is the only state that has over 2,000 active cases, with Gujarat rallying behind at 1,109. Of these, Surat has reported 58 cases, with the active tally standing at 166. Karnataka reported the most number of cases at 136 over the past 24 hours, followed by Gujarat at 129 and Kerala at 96. Interestingly, Delhi recorded a dip in cases in the past 24 hours, with 691 active cases. In Karnataka, two deaths have been reported. Maharashtra reported 89 new Covid-19 cases and one death on Tuesday, as per state health officials. The news of the death was not updated on the Centre's Covid-19 dashboard. Of the latest cases, 32 were recorded in Mumbai and 23 in Pune. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday hailed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's support during the Covid-19 pandemic and said that the Centre stepped up when the previous government was 'hiding'.

Ensure medicines reach Anganwadi centres, panchayats for sickle cell care: UP Governor
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Monday emphasised the need for ensuring the availability of medicines for sickle cell anaemia patients at Anganwadi centres and panchayat offices, saying treatment alone is not enough unless access and awareness are improved at the grassroots level. Chairing a high-level review meeting at Raj Bhavan on the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, the governor said a holistic approach was necessary to rid tribal communities of the disease. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who also holds the Health portfolio, also attended the meeting. "Merely giving medicines will not suffice. We need a comprehensive strategy to eliminate the disease from society," she said. She recommended multiple measures to strengthen the response to sickle cell anaemia, including providing nutritious food to patients, offering support under adoption and mass marriage schemes for affected youth, and launching awareness drives involving senior citizens in tribal areas. Governor Patel also called for structured counselling, provision of bone marrow transplants, and promotion of testing and research at major hospitals. She issued directions to improve the sex ratio in certain districts, ensure mandatory registration of private hospitals, collect and analyse delivery and infant health data, and crack down on doctors involved in female foeticide. Surprise inspections by senior officers were also stressed to monitor public healthcare services , according to a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan here. Highlighting the role of traditional medicine, the Governor suggested greater outreach of AYUSH and Homeopathy , including the distribution of homeopathic medicines at Anganwadi centres and primary schools, and preparing lists of essential drugs and dosage charts for each centre. She also instructed officials to organise seminars and workshops for doctors, focusing on the effectiveness of different treatments for specific illnesses. Stressing early childhood education, she said school enrolment and attendance must be ensured through better coordination between Anganwadi centres and primary schools. PTI

India's active Covid cases near 6,500; ‘newly emerging XFG variant' found, says INSACOG
Amid the Covid-19 surge in India, the total number of active cases are nearing the 6,500 mark, with some of the infections being of a newly emerging variant, as per a news agency PTI report, citing INSACOG. As per the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a total of 6,491 active cases have been recorded across India. Based on the state-wise data, Kerala remains the worst-hit with a total of 1,957 active cases, with seven new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Amid this surge, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has reportedly said that over 160 active cases have been attributed to the new XFG variant. As per the PTI report, INSACOG data suggests a total of 163 samples tested positive for the XFG variant. These were detected in Maharashtra with 89 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (16), Kerala (15), and Gujarat (11). Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal reported six cases each. The XFG variant is a descendant of the Omicron subvariant of the coronavirus. As per a study issued by The Lancet, the variant was initially detected in Canada. However, the XFG variant, "originating from LF.7 and LP.8.1.2, harbours four key spike mutations (His445Arg, Asn487Asp, Gln493Glu, and Thr572Ile) and has achieved rapid global spread," the study added. As per The Lancet, the XFG variant also displays "strong immune evasion," which allows the virus to survive and spread as it manages to evade the body's natural defences. As per the data issued by the Health Ministry on Monday, India has a total of 6,491 active cases. After Kerala, which is the worst-hit state in the new surge, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana have detected a high number of active cases. While the union ministry has not recorded any deaths in the past 24 hours, a total of 65 deaths have been reported since January 1, 2025. As per MoHFW data, these 65 deaths were reported in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat and Delhi.
