Iconic car brand's new £155k EV ‘is a complete flop' after iconic model loved by celebs is reinvented

STAFF at Mercedes have admitted that the electric version of an SUV popular with celebrities has been a "complete flop".
The German manufacturer had high hopes for the £154,810 EV, but it has not had the desired impact on the car market.

An electric version of the popular Mercedes G-Class - often referred to as the G-Wagon - has not proved successful among customers.
Reports show that, since the G 580 was introduced in April last year, the original G-Wagon has almost seven times more sales than its electric counterpart.
German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that one Mercedes executive had labelled the motor a "complete flop".
They added: "The car is sitting like lead at dealers. It's a complete flop."
Another manager admitted the volume of sales for the "niche" EV had been "very low".
It is understood that only 1,450 electric G-Wagons had been sold over a 12-month period, compared to 9,700 sales of the regular version.
Despite having the same silhouette, the G 580 has proved difficult to sell against its iconic predecessor, which is substantially cheaper.
The latter retails from £133,500, which is £20,000 less than its electric alternative.
Customers have also been put off by the EV's EPA-certified range, which sits at just 239 miles from a single charge.
And it could affect Mercedes plans for a downsized version, the "Little G", which is set to be released in 2027.
Mercedes reveals its new luxury EV with 'superscreen' passengers can play video games or watch Netflix on while on move
It was initially rumoured to be an EV-only model, but the motor giants might have to rethink these plans following the damning data and offer the vehicles with combustion engines.
First designed in the 1970s, the G-Wagon was originally conceived as a military vehicle.
But it has garnered a reputation for ferrying around famous faces and the super-rich, including Megan Fox, Britney Spears and Kendall Jenner.
Speaking to Motor1, Mercedes' Markus Nast, global communications manager for compacts, midsizers, and the G-Class, said the company was "prepared for all market scenarios".
He added: "Into the 2030s, we can flexibly offer vehicles with both a fully electric drivetrain or an electrified high-tech combustion engine.
"Our customers decide what suits them best. This also applies for the G-Class."
The G 580 features a three-speed intelligent off-road crawl function, which can drag the car through ditches and ravines.
It can reach 62mph in less than five seconds, with a top speed of 112mph.

Like a regular G-Wagon, the electric G has a ladder-frame chassis with low-range, off-road gearing and trick suspension.
And with an impressive 587hp, the three-tonne tank is as quick as a Porsche Cayman off the line.
But reports have shown that the all-electric iteration has tanked in the market, with customers still favouring the iconic original motor.

British holidaymakers to miss out on compensation after EU rule change

Britons will miss out on compensation for delayed flights after Brussels adopted a rule change following complaints from airlines. Payouts that were previously triggered by delays exceeding three hours will now only be made after four hours of holdups, European transport ministers agreed. The new regulation, hammered out following a decade of discussions and bargaining over passenger compensation, will apply to all services from EU countries to the UK. For the time being, travellers headed from Britain to the Continent will still qualify for a refund when flight delays hit the three-hour mark, unless they are flying with an EU-registered airline. While raising the compensation threshold, ministers also agreed to increase the minimum level of payment from €250 (£210) to €300 for shorter journeys and to €500 for those above 3,500km (2,175 miles). The original regulation, known as EU261, was passed in 2004 with the aim of ensuring that passengers received money and assistance in the event of flights being cancelled at short notice. Following Brexit, the UK adopted it into law so that the rights of travellers remained unchanged. However, the Government will now have to decide whether to adopt the amendments for outbound flights or stick with the original version. Taking no action might be welcomed by consumer groups but would have consequences for UK airlines, which would be at a disadvantage to their European rivals. It could also affect fares, with Ryanair having claimed that EU261 costs passengers £7 per ticket. Airlines for Europe, an industry group, had pressed for a higher compensation threshold, arguing that extending it to five hours – as originally proposed by the European Commission – would allow 70pc of flights that are cancelled to be rescued. It argued said that airlines inevitably scrapped flights once compensation was triggered, especially since the payouts involved were often higher than the ticket prices charged. It said a five-hour threshold would have made it more practical for carriers to fly in replacement aircraft so that more flights would get away, potentially benefiting 10m passengers a year. A spokesman said: 'Getting to their destination is the primary concern of passengers, even if it means getting to bed or arriving at their holiday resort late. But with a low cancellation threshold it makes more sense to call off the flight and take that hit.' Airlines have also railed against the fact that the compensation applies whether delays are caused by a crew shortage or technical issue that might be laid at their door, or by severe weather or air traffic control issues beyond their control. A number of extraordinary circumstances are expected to be added as part of revisions to 31 different air passenger rights. The revisions must still clear the European Parliament but are expected to become law in the bloc by the end of the year. The Department for Transport said the UK did not have to amend its legislation in line with any changes from the EU, and that any potential future reforms would require careful consideration on their merits, and be subject to public consultation.

Revealed: The 'three people allowed to visit Michael Schumacher' - with F1 icon not seen in public since horror skiing accident in 2013

The three people that are reportedly permitted to visit Formula One legend Michael Schumacher have been revealed. Schumacher has remained outside of the public eye since suffering a serious brain injury whilst skiing in the French Alps in 2013. The legendary driver subsequently spent several months in a medically induced coma after two surgical interventions. Schumacher is cared for by a team of medical staff and his wife Corinna at their Lake Geneva home. The relative silence in terms of updates surrounding the seven-time world champion's health has led to a consistent stream of speculation from those whom he was previously close to. In 2020, Italian TV personality Elisabetta Gregoraci - who was previously married to former Benetton chief Flavio Briatore - claimed to know the size of Schumacher's trusted inner circle. She said: 'Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. 'Only three people can visit him and I know who they are.' An investigation from The Telegraph has since claimed to reveal the identity of the three individuals in question. French racing executive Jean Todt, who worked closely alongside Schumacher during his hugely-successful time at Ferrari is said to be one. Meanwhile Ross Brawn, who led Ferrari to five consecutive constructors titles between 2000 and 2004 is believed to be another. The final member of the three is said to be Austrian former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger, who has gone from being Schumacher's rival on the track to a close confidant of the family. Schumacher's family remain very protective of his privacy and it is understood that many of their close friends and relations are even unsure about the state of his health. The German's seven world drivers' titles stood as a record for more than a decade, equalled only by Lewis Hamilton's triumph in 2020.

ECB is 'nearly done' with cuts if forecasts hold, Vujcic says

DUBROVNIK, Croatia, June 7 (Reuters) - The European Central Bank is "nearly done" cutting interest rates if inflation settles at 2% as expected, ECB policymaker Boris Vujcic said on Saturday. The ECB cut interest rates on Thursday for the eighth time in the past year and signalled a policy pause next month since inflation was now safely back at its 2% target after three years of overshooting. "I would agree we are nearly done and that we are in a good position," Croatia's central bank governor told reporters on the sidelines of a conference. "If our projections materialise as they are in June I would think this is the right qualification of our monetary policy stance." He warmed any surprises in growth and inflation data would "affect" the ECB's thinking, as would the hard-to-predict outcome of the European Union's trade negotiations with the United States.
