said on Wednesday that around 138 million children around the world are still working in factories and fields. Given the slow pace of progress, the organisation has warned that eliminating child labour could take 'hundreds of years.

Nearly 40 per cent of these children were reported to be engaged in hazardous work in 2024, according to the report. Progress has been especially slow among younger children, with around 80 million kids aged between 5 and 11 found to be working.
Countries worldwide had pledged to end child labour by the end of 2025 under the Sustainable Development Goals. But in a joint report, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said, 'That timeline has now come to an end.
But child labor has not.'
Unicef chief Catherine Russell noted that while there has been 'significant progress' in reducing the rate at which child labour is growing, 'far too many children continue to toil in mines, factories or fields, often doing hazardous work to survive.'
According to data published annually, 137.6 million children aged 5–17 were engaged in child labour last year, about 7.8 per cent of all children in that age group.

The event, held in Jharia and extending to various parts of the town, witnessed the participation of social workers, teachers, coal workers, and even former child labourers. The rally, initiated from Jharia, passed through several coal-rich zones, drawing attention to the widespread practice of child labour in the region. Sonsoddo gradient: Muslim groups question kabrastan site feasibility
Margao: As the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) works to remove bottlenecks in its long-pending kabrastan project, Muslim community members are pointing to an existing consultancy report to question the feasibility of the 30,000sqm land acquired at Sonsoddo. They said only 2,500sqm would actually be available for burial purposes. The community's concerns are based on the consultant's survey report, which identified the difficult terrain of the acquired plot. It stated that much of the land has a gradient higher than 25% and is not developable under the current town and country planning rules and regulations. The consultant found that substantial hill cutting and land development would be required to make even the small usable portion suitable for burial purposes. According to the survey, only the lower southern section of the plot, measuring approximately 2,500sqm and 15m wide, could potentially be developed after extensive hill cutting.
