Passengers stranded as 135 flights cancelled at Delhi Airport following Op Sindoor

Indian Express07-05-2025

Hours after the Indian armed forces struck nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as they launched Operation Sindoor, flight operations across North India were impacted on Wednesday, including at Delhi Airport, which witnessed at least 135 flights being cancelled.
As many as 65 arriving and 66 departing flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the country's largest and busiest airport, have been cancelled, a source said. Two departing and two arriving international flights were also cancelled. The foreign carriers that cancelled some of their services from the airport included American Airlines.
'All operations across terminals and all 4 runways at Delhi airport, continue to function normally. However, there have been impact on some flights due to changing airspace,' Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates the IGIA, said in a post on X.
Flight tracking data also showed no civilian aircraft activity north of Delhi, where some of the sensitive airports close to the Pakistan border are located.
IndiGo and Air India cancelled all their flights scheduled to and from airports in North India, including Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Dharamshala till May 10. Air India also cancelled all its flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh and Rajkot till May 10.
Air India further said that two international flights to Kashmir were diverted to Delhi.
India's strikes also led to most international flights overflying Pakistan around that time diverting away and steering clear of the Pakistani airspace.
The cancellations and delays left many passengers stranded at the airport.
Adnan Manzoor (18) was on his way home to Srinagar on Wednesday morning after a gruelling three years of NEET preparation in Kota, Rajasthan's examination coaching hub.
'I reached the airport at 7 am for my flight to Srinagar, which was scheduled for 2 pm. Only then did they inform me that the flight was cancelled, but they said there is a flight in the evening,' Manzoor said.
Kalicharan (45) has been at the airport with his wife and two children since 5 pm on Tuesday. 'We reached Delhi early Tuesday by train from Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh. Spent as much time as we could have at the train station and then came to the airport in the evening. Since then, we have been tossing and turning and trying to sleep here,' said Kalicharan, who was going to Leh to work at a construction site.
'They are saying there might be a flight tomorrow afternoon, so we will wait for that,' said his son Karan Neherwal (18), as he lay on a bedsheet spread on the floor outside Terminal 1.
Nirmal Rai (38) is also on his way to Leh. 'We have been here since midnight… We don't have any choice, we don't have anywhere to stay,' said Rai, who is with a group of 13 labourers heading to Leh for the construction of a road. The group hails from Dumka in Jharkhand.
'I am just concerned about getting a refund,' said Chhiga Ahirwar (48), also from Chhatarpur in MP. He, too, is travelling to Leh with another group of 15 labourers.
Param Lal (50), one of the members of his group, is making frantic calls to contractors he knows in Delhi to find a place to stay. 'How will I find a place for 15 people to stay? If it is a family of three to four, then it is fine, but who will keep 15 people in their house?' Lal asked.

‘Middle-class' man's post on India's top 1% lifestyle sparks buzz: ‘Each car worth ₹50 lakh'

A Reddit post describing a birthday party hosted by a wealthy Indian man has claimed to open a rare window into the world of India's top 1%. Taking to Reddit, an anonymous user shared the story of a lavish gathering at the home of a lawyer, revealing just how differently the country's richest live. Posting in the r/AskIndia subreddit, the user, who described himself as middle-class, wrote: 'I recently went to a birthday party of a lawyer's son. Being from a middle-class family, I was never exposed to this much luxury. The 1% world is really different.' He described the experience as one drenched in opulence: posh, dust-free, tree-lined neighbourhoods, valet parking for guests, and a fleet of luxury vehicles. 'He resides in a posh area without dust and full of greenery, valets for guest parking, five cars each worth upwards of ₹50 lakh, businessmen, politicians bringing gifts, and a very different Hindi accent,' the post continued. He ended by asking others to share their brushes with India's wealthiest. The post quickly gained traction, with many chiming in with their own jaw-dropping experiences. 'I managed to study in one of the top NCR schools. Befriended a guy since a young age, went to his house for a night stay when I was like 10 — he lives in a mansion in South Delhi with eight cars in his driveway. Had around 10 butlers catering to the joint family living across those 4–5 floors,' shared one user. Another remarked on how skewed income inequality has become in India: 'I think most people don't realise that if you have a good home, a vehicle to travel in, and regular meals, you're already very close to the top 1% in India. What you saw was probably the top 0.01%.' A third user described the extravagant lifestyles of their 'super duper rich' friends: 'I have many friends who are super duper rich. They travel abroad every fourth week and have exuberant weddings every year, at least 5–7 destination weddings, with at least one celebrity performance mandatory. They gift friends and family items worth at least ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh. They spend at least ₹2–3 lakh per month on basic lifestyle expenses like food, parties, and hanging out. Shopping alone costs another ₹2–3 lakh a month. They buy new bags every few months, starting from ₹2 lakh and going up to ₹5–6 lakh... some even ₹20–30 lakh. They keep hosting expensive parties every other week at their home or farmhouse for no reason. Most have 5–10 staff at home, but some I know have 20–30 helpers. Salaries for household staff alone come to ₹2–3 lakh monthly.'

From AI to UPI: How tech is redefining travel for Indians in 2025

Remember when booking a vacation meant standing in line at a travel agency, flipping through glossy brochures, and hoping your hotel looked something like the pictures? Fast forward to 2025, and Indian travel planning is less 'bargain at the counter' and more chatting with AI bots any time of the year. Whether you're craving a sunrise trek in the Sahyadris or a last-minute beach escape to Bali, all it takes is a swipe, tap, or even a voice note. The new trend of turning to the AI for everything under the sun, to UPI payments that zap money across time zones in seconds, tech has turned travel from task to treat. EasyMyTrip launches 'EMT Invest' to back profitable businesses to scale

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Online travel platform EaseMyTrip has launched 'EMT Invest' to partner with profitable, founder-led businesses that are ready to scale. In a statement, the company said that it is looking to partner with businesses that report a minimum profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 5 crore, have strong unit economics and scalable models, and operate in any high-growth sector. A key criterion is that these businesses must be promoter-led with full operational control and a clear need for growth capital over the next three to five years. To initiate the engagement, EMT Invest has invited interested companies to share their last two years of audited financials, cash flow statement, cap table, and a detailed 3-5 year business plan. EMT Invest's typical investment model involves acquiring a strategic minority stake of up to 49 percent, ensuring that promoters retain full control. 'Our goal is to create long-term value and prepare the company for significant milestones such as IPOs or secondary exits,' the company said. Investment structure and terms will be finalised during the second phase based on mutual understanding and regulatory compliance, according to the statement. Earlier on June 1, Founder and Chairman of the company Nishant Pitti said EaseMyTrip 2.0 story will be about growth in India's next big businesses. Taking to his social media handle X, EaseMyTrip Founder and Chairman posted that the company is 'looking for founders who need working capital to grow and where the popular travel platform can take up to 49 per cent equity.' The equity stake in such companies will come with a clear objective of helping scale using EaseMyTrip's 3+ crore customer base, brand trust, and digital infrastructure, Pitti said. EaseMyTrip says it is India's fastest-growing and the only profitable Online Travel aggregator, which is 100 per cent bootstrapped and listed on NSE and BSE. EaseMyTrip commenced its operations in 2008 by focusing on the B2B2C (business to business to customer) distribution channel and providing travel agents access to its website to book domestic travel airline tickets in order to cater to the offline travel market in India. Subsequently, by leveraging its B2B2C channel, the company commenced operations in the B2C (business to customer) distribution channel in 2011 by primarily focusing on the growing Indian middle class population's travel requirements. It later commenced operations in the B2E (business to enterprise) distribution channel in 2013 with the aim of providing end-to-end travel solutions to corporates. (ANI)
