LaVar Ball says sons ‘kept me rolling' amid health issues, leg amputation

New York Times19-03-2025

LaVar Ball, the outspoken father of NBA stars Lonzo and LaMelo Ball and rapper LiAngelo, recently opened up about the health issues that led to a portion of his leg being amputated to SLAM magazine.
Ball said in the self-authored piece that an infection due to complications from diabetes led to him being hospitalized for over a month. Doctors performed three separate amputations on his right leg, starting with several toes, then his foot, before a final surgery to amputate just below the knee. Ball said he also required blood transfusions on four different occasions.

Ball said he questioned 'whether it was worth going through it sometimes' but said that his children were there for support.
'I'm the Big Baller. I'm hard to kill,' Ball wrote. 'But I must admit that my boys kept me rolling. Cause a couple of times, I was like, I can't do no more blood transfusions. I can't do no more operations. I'm just ready to shut it down. It's enough for me. But I'm here for a bigger purpose.'
LaMelo, LaVar's youngest son, is averaging a career-high 25.4 points per game with the Charlotte Hornets, while Lonzo, the oldest brother, returned to the floor with the Chicago Bulls this year after missing two full seasons with injuries.
LiAngelo, who played in the G-League and internationally from 2018 to 2024, began releasing music in January. His first single 'Tweaker' went viral and led to him performing at NBA All-Star Weekend in February. In January, LiAngelo signed a record deal with Def Jam Recordings worth up to $13 million, per ESPN.
Their father wrote that seeing the success of his children, along with the health struggles he's seen other people his age deal with, has helped keep him grounded and give him perspective. With his health in order, LaVar said he's looking to use his platform to encourage others to learn from him.
'The doctors said, Big Baller, you were very close to having to shut it down. But they were quick enough to give me the blood transfusions and keep that poison from going throughout my body,' LaVar wrote. 'So, now I'm telling folks, if you got diabetes, don't just be like, Oh, that's just diabetes. I still eat my sugar, but I pay attention to it and do it in moderation. Get your checkups, do what you're supposed to do. If you don't have insurance, go to urgent care. Because I'm going to tell you this, a little amputation and a little of this, it could all have been prevented.
'And I look at it like this, too: I got a lot of limbs to come off. I'm hard to kill. I got some bigger stuff that the Big Baller still gotta do.'

Doc Rivers tells Kobe Bryant story from 2008 NBA Finals: 'He put that fear in you, man'

Doc Rivers tells Kobe Bryant story from 2008 NBA Finals: 'He put that fear in you, man' Kobe Bryant, the late Los Angeles Lakers great, was one of the greatest basketball players and overall athletes of all time. He led the Lakers to five NBA championships, and he was not only one of the greatest crunch-time performers ever but, in the minds of some, he was possibly the greatest closer ever. Even when the Lakers were down by double digits in the fourth quarter of a game, fans often thought there was still a chance the team could pull out a victory because of Bryant's exploits under pressure and his lack of fear. Like anyone else, he had his share of lowlights, and one of the worst moments of his career came when L.A. was embarrassed in the 2008 NBA Finals by the archrival Boston Celtics. It lost Game 6, 131-92, in Boston as the Celtics claimed their 17th championship, and although the Celtics were ahead by a wide margin down the stretch, head coach Doc Rivers could still feel the fear that Bryant always put in the minds and hearts of opponents. Celtics defensive coordinator Tom Thibodeau wanted Rivers to take his starters out midway through the fourth quarter, but Rivers refused because he feared that Bryant could get L.A. back in the game. Via Fox Sports: 'Game 6 was terrific,' Rivers said. 'That's a moment that I remember in 2008. The funniest moment, Kobe knows this, but we were up 1,000 [points] in Game 6 and the guy who you would least expect walks over to me during the game -- Tom Thibodeau -- and he asks me, 'Are you going to sub out? There's six minutes and we're up 42 points.' 'Of all the guys to say that, it's Tom Thibodeau. And I looked over there at the Lakers and Kobe was still on the floor, and I actually said, 'When Phil [Jackson] takes that guy out, I take my guys out.' And Thibs said, 'You're safe.' And I said, 'Not with that guy on the floor.' 'I was dead serious. I had obviously lost my mind because it was a 42-point lead. But he put that fear in you, man. He could run off threes. I was obviously not good at math, so I was worried about him. Then finally Phil took him out so I could sub. It was good.' The type of deficit the Lakers faced in the fourth quarter of that game was one even Bryant couldn't overcome. The embarrassment they suffered bonded the team together, and coming into next season, it was clearly on a mission. It won the 2009 NBA title, but it defeated the Orlando Magic and not the Celtics. The Lakers finally got another shot at the men in green in the 2010 finals, and this time, they won it all, as they overcame a 13-point deficit in the third quarter of Game 7. Bryant shot 6-of-24 from the field in that seventh game, but he played very well for most of the second half and especially in the fourth quarter, as he found ways to be efficient offensively while also contributing in other areas. For those who paid attention to his excellent play down the stretch of the game, it reinforced his image as arguably basketball's ultimate closer.

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land $220 Million Superstar for Paul George

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land $220 Million Superstar for Paul George originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Paul George's first season with the Philadelphia 76ers didn't turn out the way the franchise thought it would. Due to injuries to George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers missed the playoffs. The outcome was far from being title contenders, the reason why the star forward joined the organization. Advertisement On the bright side, Philly secured the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They could either use it to draft a promising prospect or put it in a trade package and acquire another All-Star player. There have been speculations on what the Sixers should do with the draft pick. If the team decides to strike a deal with another franchise and trade the pick, Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey has a suggestion. Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George controls the ball against Phoenix Suns forward Ryan Streicher-Imagn Images According to Bailey's trade proposal, the Sixers could consider making a deal with the Phoenix Suns. Using the No. 3 pick, packaged with George and a few other future draft picks, they could convince the Western Conference team to trade All-Star guard Devin Booker. Advertisement "Adding that pick to two more firsts and a far-future pick swap would give the Suns a good batch of draft assets to tip off a rebuild. And trading George somewhere down the line for more assets wouldn't be out of the question either," Bailey wrote. With Booker, the 76ers are secure over the next three seasons. The former Kentucky guard has three years left in his four-year, $220 million contract. Also, the Sixers could be a better team for the 6-foot-6 guard, since they are aiming to contend for the title. It will also be an easier situation for Philly to dump George's four-year, $212 million maximum contract. The veteran forward will be 36 years old by the time he finishes the third year of his deal. Additionally, the nine-time All-Star's recent injury woes won't be helpful for the Sixers in the future.
