'Turkey teeth' are leaving Brits toothless and in pain but dentists can't help

Travelling for a set of 'Turkey Teeth' may not be all that it seems, with Brits saying they are left with permanent damage, but UK dentists have confirmed they might not be able to help
The cosmetic dental treatments infamously done in Turkey, most commonly known as "Turkey teeth," won't be fixed, if needed, by the NHS.
Veneers, crowns and full-mouth restorations are part of the dental tourism experience, as the trend soars in popularity with young people. The TikTok hashtag "Turkeyteeth" has over 130 million views, with many Tiktokers opting to film their journeys to Turkey to carry out these procedures.

Chosen by many influencers and reality TV stars, the blinding smiles would usually cost a substantial £20,000 in a London clinic. The significance of a 'teeth trip to Turkey' being that its much more cost-effective, or so they'd hoped. Almost a quarter in comparison, Turkey's prices can be between £3,000 - £6,000.

Can you reverse turkey teeth?
As porcelain veneers require the shaving down of teeth, and therefore enamel, the client will have irreversible enamel loss, leaving the tooth structures without enamel permanently exposed and vulnerable.
Many adults in their twenties have taken to TikTok to share their horror stories after what they'd believed was a long-term quick fix. Unfortunately, once a person's enamel is removed, it cannot regenerate.
Those who opt for Turkey teeth will need veneers for the rest of their lives, whether they began with healthy teeth before or not. Traditional porcelain veneers cause permanent damage to one's teeth due to the aggressive nature of the procedure, with the risks only increasing if done abroad.

What happens after botched turkey teeth?
The common misconception is that one appointment applying veneers has you set for life, but that is far from the case. A Qunomedical doctor spoke to WalesOnline, stating that: "Veneers tend to last around 10-15 years. Crowns tend to last 15-20 years and implants will last a lifetime".
Severe consequences of Turkey teeth include the need for medical treatment, most likely at a private clinic and thus costing more than the discounted price you initially thought was a bargain of lifetime, says Dr Richard Clinics, London.
The clinic adds that problems caused by botched Turkey teeth can include an increase of sensitivity, infection in the gums - due to hygiene being a reoccurring problem - for cheap dental tourism - and even the crowns or veneers falling out. One mum even spoke to WalesOnline about being in "the worst pain of her life" because of a faulty procedure.

Will UK dentists repair turkey teeth?
The owner of the Shard End Dental Practice in Birmingham, Vijay Sudra spoke to the Mirror and Birmingham Live, sharing how he warned a patient that he could not help them if they got the cosmetic procedure abroad. He said that the "broken and absolutely bonkers" NHS dental system was the cause of dental tourism from the UK.
He highlighted how UK dentists would not fix issues resulting from having veneers in another country due to legal fears of being liable for further damage caused.

Dr Richard's Clinic supports this, the clinic site stating: "Many people think the NHS will help if something goes wrong, but this is not the case. Although the NHS "will provide any clinically necessary treatment needed to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy and free of pain," this does not include repairing the damage done by a botched cosmetic treatment".
When asked to comment on these claims of refusing to fix "botched" cosmetic dental work, an NHS England spokesperson said: "Patients are entitled to NHS dental care if there is a complication or an oral health issue, but the NHS isn't going to – for example – fix an aesthetic issue with veneers as that isn't something the NHS would usually fund anyway".
"Self-funded care that the NHS would not routinely fund would not usually be offered or replaced once stabilisation has been achieved".

Between a rock and a hard place: How I get by in contested Gibraltar

The sun-soaked British Overseas Territory is a slice of the UK on the southern coast of Spain - and has been a popular holiday hotspot for Brits looking for a break closer to home With its iconic red phone boxes, traditional full English breakfasts, and a vintage-style M&S, it's like stepping into a 1970s British high street. But this isn't a charming village in the English countryside - it's Gibraltar. Nestled on Spain's southern coast, this British Overseas Territory offers all the home comforts of the UK, with just a few hints - such as scorching sunshine and a wandering monkey population - to remind visitors they're over 1,000 miles from Blighty. ‌ Gibraltar is home to familiar brands like Morrisons, Costa Coffee and Card Factory, while locals enjoy hearty roasts, afternoon tea and other British favourites, according to MailOnline. ‌ Earlier this week, the UK reached a landmark agreement with the EU, securing a 'fluid' border with Spain - meaning travellers can cross the land border without checks, paving the way for a long-awaited post-Brexit deal. However, those entering via land will enjoy seamless travel, anyone flying into Gibraltar from the UK will face two checks - one by local Gibraltarian authorities and a second by the Spanish acting on behalf of the EU, as the land border provides direct access to Europe's Schengen area, reports the Express. Despite the updated arrangement, the UK and Gibraltar have been quick to emphasise it does not affect the territory's sovereignty. Locals still use the British pound and hold UK passports, even though they're closer to Morocco than Manchester. Gibraltar could soon be a rising star in holiday destinations, with airlines considering new international routes to the British overseas territory. It promises visitors a unique blend of British charm and Mediterranean flair, as evidenced by countless TikTok expat and local creators. Meg Leigh, a Yorkshire lass turned Gibraltarian, has been documenting her sun-kissed adventures on TikTok for four years, giving followers a peek into her idyllic life that includes seaside strolls and monkey meet-ups. ‌ In a viral TikTok video, Meg reveals her love for her adopted home: "I wouldn't move back to the UK. Four years on and I own my house, have a job for life and better quality of life. Three years later and as much as I miss my family & friends, I love my life in Gib," while cautioning that Gibraltar can be "super expensive" and recommending job security before relocating. With Rightmove noting an average housing price at a steep £491,867 due to high demand and import costs, residents are feeling the financial impact, albeit tourists remain cushioned from this with no currency exchange worries and duty free shopping for luxuries like jewellery and perfume. ‌ Another popular TikToker, Hannah (@lidbetterlidbetter) from the south of England, is racking up millions of views with snippets revealing her daily existence in this sunny sliver of Britain. "It's like the UK but actually in the sun," she joked in one viral video, showcasing marching bands, traditional phone boxes, and familiar high street brands - not to mention sandy beaches, dolphin-watching excursions, and Gibraltar's notorious monkeys. "Welcome to living in the UK but in the sunshine," she declared in another snippet. ‌ She pointed out that while you'll come across a McDonald's, Burger King and Costa, the menus might vary - and that most locals are bilingual, blending English and Spanish in their daily chat. "It's small! But a real sense of community and excellent school and health systems," she continued. Perhaps the most peculiar feature? The airport. Hannah captured the moment cars paused to cross the runway, which oddly cuts through a main road. Traffic is stopped until planes have taken off or landed, before vehicles are given the green light to drive over. "One of the craziest things about Gibraltar is probably the whole runway, airport scenario. It's honestly so bizarre," she remarked.

Little-known spot in the Canary Islands named 'cheapest' for summer holidays

A lesser-known resort in the Canary Islands has been named Spain's best value destination for summer holidays this year - and it's right by some popular hotspots Brits heading to the Canary Islands this summer may want to consider a trip to Tenerife - but not necessarily to famous resorts such as Costa Adeje. If you're looking for Spain holidays on a budget, then the island's Costa del Silencio needs to be on your radar, as it's recently been revealed as the Canaries' best value destination for summer. According to research from TravelSupermarket, a week's holiday in Costa del Silencio comes in at an average of £424pp between May and September, making it the cheapest in rankings out of all the Spanish hotspots compared. "Costa del Silencio offers exceptional value for those seeking summer sun in the Canaries," explained Steph Marinkovic, Head of Editorial at TravelSupermarket. "What's great about this spot is that it's much quieter than Tenerife's busy southern resorts, but it's super affordable. "You've got the amazing golden Montaña Amarilla volcanic formation right on your doorstep - one of Tenerife's most Instagram-worthy natural landmarks – without paying the premium prices you'd expect for such spectacular scenery. The destination is known for excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities in its crystalline waters, as well as easy access to nearby Golf del Sur for affordable golfing." It's worth noting that if you're after Tenerife's iconic nightlife, then this may not be the destination for you, as the name aptly suggests! However if you're looking to make the most of the island's gorgeous beaches, or want to enjoy some of the sunshine without having to brave the crowds, then there's plenty of appeal. That's not to say there's no atmosphere at all; you'll still find plenty of restaurants and bars, but there tends to be more of a laidback vibe to the area. Oh, and if you do want the odd night out or two, it's just a 20-minute drive to popular areas such as Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. Costa del Silencio was the top best value destination in the Canaries, but for all Spanish destinations overall it was the charming town of Manilva which took the top spot in the rankings. The tiny seaside town boasts beautiful beaches and vineyards, and sits right by Costa del Sol so you can easily access all of the resort's iconic beaches and party towns. Meanwhile if you're after more Spanish getaway inspiration, you can check out Spain's top 10 best value destinations in the list below: Manilva, Costa del Sol (£371) Costa del Silencio, Tenerife (£424) S'illot, Majorca (£449) Calpe, Costa Blanca (£470) Cala Ratjada, Majorca (£488) Callao Salvaje, Tenerife (£498) Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava (£508) Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife (£512) Lloret de Mar, Costa Brava (£522) El Arenal, Majorca (£535) Steph added: "Across the top ten, we see a mix of established resort towns and lesser-known gems, giving budget-conscious travellers plenty of options for their summer getaway. No matter your beach holiday style – whether you prefer authentic villages, vibrant resorts, or family-friendly beaches – there's a bargain destination in Spain to match."

Beautiful UK village is home to 'best hidden gem' with a Caribbean-worthy beach

A tiny town in the UK has been revealed as having the 'best hidden gem' with a gorgeous beach that looks like it's come straight out of a storybook Brits planning a summer staycation may want to head to Northumberland, where they could find a breathtakingly beautiful beach that's been dubbed one of the UK's best hidden gems. The small village of Embleton isn't a big holiday hotspot; in fact, it boasts a handful of restaurants and hotels. However, for those who enjoy a break away from the crowds and like to go off the main tourist track, the picturesque spot is well worth visiting if only to check out the breathtaking Embleton Bay. This dune-lined bay which can be reached from the Northumberland Coastal Route looks like something out of the Caribbean with its miles-long wide sandy beach, and postcard-worthy surroundings. Visitors never fail to be impressed by the gorgeous setting, although they have warned that it can be a little tricky to reach for those with mobility issues. Still, those who do make the trip have often praised the spectacular views. One happy holidaymaker even described it as "probably one of the most beautiful bays anywhere in the world". Another added: "Beautiful, quiet dog friendly beach with great views. A castle at one end of the bay and a pub at the far end up at Low Newton By The Sea. Embleton Beach is pretty amazing. We were lucky enough to be staying in a cottage overlooking the bay and walked the dog on the sands every morning, often with nobody else in sight!" The area is also popular with birdwatchers, as you can find a variety of both seabirds and shorebirds, courtesy of the nearby Newton Pool Bird Reserve. Still, the beach remains one of the biggest draws for tourists. Another Brit who visited in September described it as a 'hidden gem'. They explained: "Embleton bay is a hidden gem on the Northumberland coast. The beach is powdery white sand and the sea is clear and safe for bathing. Dunstanburgh castle makes a dramatic backdrop and it is a pleasant walk along the coast to Craster." With the positive reviews from beachgoers, it's therefore no wonder that research from the outdoor experts at Millets uncovered it as England's top hidden gem. The team explained: "This quiet and unspoiled beach is backed by low dunes and watched over by the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Just minutes from the historic village of Embleton, it offers a peaceful escape. Reviewers on TripAdvisor have called it 'perfection in the form of solitude' and a 'must-visit'." In fact, Embleton Bay beat out a number of breathtaking spots in the likes of Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire - you can check out the top 15 destinations in the rankings below.
