Ceasefire takes effect after Iran launches 6 waves of missiles at Israel
By OUR CORRESPONDENT
Muscat – A ceasefire between Israel and Iran came into effect at 0400 GMT on Tuesday, following hours of intense hostilities during which Iran launched six waves of missile attacks targeting Israeli territory.
The Israeli military confirmed that a total of 11 missiles were fired in six consecutive volleys in the hours leading up to the truce.
According to Israel's emergency medical services, at least six people were killed and 15 others injured—some critically—after a rocket struck a residential building in the southern city of Beersheba.
Explosions were also reported in Tel Aviv and other parts of central Israel, according to Israeli media.
Iranian state media confirmed the beginning of the ceasefire, noting that it followed the 'final salvos' of missile fire.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority and military radio also reported the start of the ceasefire, although Israeli officials have yet to issue a formal statement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly instructed ministers not to comment publicly on the truce.
The ceasefire was initially announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, who outlined a phased de-escalation: Iran would halt attacks first, followed by Israel 12 hours later, with a full cessation of hostilities expected after 24 hours.
Qatar was reported by Israeli media to have mediated the agreement.

Gaza rescuers say Israeli forces killed 21 people waiting for aid
Gaza City, Palestinian Territories: Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces killed 21 people waiting for aid near a distribution site in the centre of the Palestinian territory on Tuesday, the latest deadly incident targeting aid-seekers. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 21 people were killed and around 150 wounded "as a result of the Israeli occupation forces' targeting of gatherings of citizens waiting for aid... in the central Gaza Strip with bullets and tank shells" in the early hours of Tuesday. AFP has contacted the Israeli military for comment on the incident. Israeli restrictions on media in the Gaza Strip and difficulties in accessing some areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by rescuers and authorities in the Palestinian territory. Bassal added that five people were killed and several injured in an Israeli air strike that targeted a house in Gaza City at dawn. Thousands of Palestinians have gathered daily in the hope of receiving food rations in Gaza, as famine looms across the territory after more than 20 months of war. According to figures issued on Saturday by the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, at least 450 people have been killed and nearly 3,500 injured by Israeli fire while seeking aid since late May. Many of those have been near sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, according to rescuers. The privately run foundation's operations in Gaza have been marred by chaotic scenes. UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with it over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. Israel's opposition leader on Tuesday called for an end to the war in Gaza, after Israel announced it had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran. "And now Gaza. It's time to finish it there too. Bring back the hostages, end the war," Yair Lapid wrote on X.

Iran signals willingness for ceasefire with Israel
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has signalled Tehran's willingness to stop military operations against Israel while denying that an agreement has been reached. Araghchi has said that Tehran would stop its military response if Israel ceased its attacks by 4 am (0030 GMT) - the first official reaction to US President Donald Trump's earlier claim that Israel and Iran had agreed to a truce. "As of now, there is NO 'agreement' on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations," Araghchi wrote in a post on platform X early on Tuesday. "However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time,we have no intention to continue our response afterwards," he added. The Iranian foreign minister added that a final decision on ending Iran's military operations would be made later. Trump earlier said that a "complete and total" ceasefire between Israel and Iran had been reached, adding that the truce would begin within hours. There was initially no confirmation from the Israeli side of Trump's announced ceasefire between the two arch-enemies.
