A former customer call representative at a bank based in North Carolina admitted to using customers' personal information to steal nearly $80,000 from their accounts, federal prosecutors said.
Jillian Scott, 31, pleaded guilty May 7 to bank fraud and misuse of Social Security numbers, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina said in a news release.
McClatchy News reached out to Scott's attorney May 7 but did not receive an immediate response.
According to court documents, Scott used her position to gain access to more than 20 State Employees Credit Union customers' accounts between November 2018 and June 2021, the length of her employment. SECU is based in Raleigh.
Scott made at least 18 fake PayPal and CashApp accounts and created fraudulent bill pay checks using customer information to transfer money from their accounts to her personal accounts, prosecutors said.
In total, she made 688 fraudulent CashApp transactions, 120 fake PayPal transfers and 47 false bill pay checks for a total of more than $79,480, according to court documents.
McClatchy News reached out to SECU on May 7 but did not receive an immediate response.
She is set to be sentenced later this year and faces up to 35 years in prison, prosecutors said.

According to witnesses, alleged gunshots rang out around 2am Saturday at a convenience store across from the nightclub. One witness, who chose to stay anonymous, shared a video showing the gunfire. After she saw the police rushed to scene, she saw an alleged victim laying on the ground while paramedics tried to revive them. Unfortunately, she said the person appeared lifeless. 'I seen they flipped over the dude, and they tried to give him CPR, but it looked like it wasn't working, he just looked lifeless, that was really it,' said the witness. She said she sends her condolences to the alleged victim's family and said if security at the club were more effective, she feels this could have been prevented. 'My condolences are sent to his family, I don't wish that upon my worst enemy at all,' said the witness. 'I feel like the security at cowboys can be a little better when it comes down to stuff like this, because even though you don't know the people that's going to come out, or an estimate amount of the people that's going to come, you need to stay ready so you won't have to get ready,' said the witness. The witness added while she was out enjoying time with friends, she never imagined it could be someone's last night alive. 'We thinking we going to have a good time not knowing that it could be our last night, we having fun with our friends, but whole time your life about to end within the next few minutes or the next hour or so,' the witness said.
