Joey O'Brien warns Shelbourne's title defence at risk from ‘bad individual mistakes' ahead of ‘massive game' vs Drogheda

The Irish Sun19-05-2025

JOEY O'BRIEN reckons Shelbourne's title defence will be derailed if the Reds keep making mistakes.
The champions host FAI Cup holders Drogheda United this evening in a clash brought forward from July because of both sides' European commitments.

But Shels' current issues are at home as they have won just one of their last seven games and lost three of their last four — including last
The unpredictable nature of the season means they are still just seven points off top spot.
But assistant manager O'Brien — who saw Mark Coyle and Ali Coote sent off in Dalymount — acknowledged that the club's problems are all too predictable.
He said: 'It's just been bad individual mistakes. And the lads know . . . if it continues we're not going to go where we want to go.

'You can do a lot of work and talk about certain things, but if you keep making mistakes regarding the backline . . .
'With the goals we've been giving away, it's an uphill task. There's obviously a lot of good teams. Not a lot of difference in a lot of the teams I don't think. The first goal is a massive thing.'
Shelbourne have kept just three clean sheets all year and none in the last seven games.
Last season, they were also almost unstoppable after scoring first — dropping just four points after grabbing the opener.

But this term, they have won just five of the nine games where they have taken the lead.
O'Brien — who stood in for Friday's derby with boss Damien Duff banned and taking up a vantage point behind the Des Kelly Stand — added: 'We got a turnover of players . . . the lads leaving in the summer.
Shelbourne manager Damien Duff gives sweet birthday shoutout to his mother after his side's draw against St Pat's
'And then again this season there's been a turnover of players. So it's finding a way. But the standout thing is we weren't making mistakes.
'We weren't giving up goals that we've given up this year. You look at a lot of the goals we've given up, they've been really, really poor from an individual point of view. Mistakes, OGs. Some mad stuff.'
Shels are short defensively without Paddy Barrett, Sam Bone and Lewis through injury, while Tyreke Wilson has only just returned.
And they will be further hit tonight as captain Coyle — a midfielder moonlighting in defence for the past month — is suspended after being sent off against Bohs.
'MASSIVE GAME'
But ex-Ireland ace O'Brien is confident Shels can turn it around.
He continued: 'Our performances have been good in a lot of the games we've played in.
'Seeing how much possession you have, seeing how many chances you created, even the amount of chances we give up in games, there hasn't been many this year.
'It's great to have the game on Monday. Going into the two games now in a week at home, it's a great opportunity for us to go out and perform.
'I think our performances at home have been quite good all season. It's a massive game on Monday for the boys.
'Just to dust themselves down and attack the game on Monday.'
Striker Seán Boyd will miss out as well as midfielder Coote.
But manager Duff will be back on the sideline
Drogheda United welcome back ex-Red Shane Farrell from suspension while Josh Thomas, Paul Doyle and Darragh Markey remain out.
ODDS
: Shelbourne 10-11, Drogheda United 3-1, Draw 11-5.
VERDICT
: Drogheda

Caoimhin Kelleher's new club might need a manager just days after his arrival

Caoimhin Kelleher could find himself playing next season under a different manager to the one that green-lighted his move from Liverpool just days ago. Brentford manager Thomas Frank has raced into the lead - as far as the bookies are concerned - for the Tottenham job. Spurs are on the lookout for a new manager after Friday evening's decision to part company with Europa League winning boss Ange Postecoglou. The Australian was relieved of his duties just two years into his role, despite leading the club to their first trophy in 17 years - and their first European honour in 41 years. Spurs posted on social media: 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.' 'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. 'Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy. Thank you Ange.' Frank's stock has been on the rise ever since his emergence in English football with Brentford. He arrived at the club from Brondby in 2016 as assistant head coach and in October 2018 was handed the top job. He led the Bees to Premier League promotion in 2021 and has kept them there. Last season they finished 10th in the table. Kelleher completed his move from Liverpool to Brentford before joining up with his Ireland teammates in Dublin for the friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg. Among the others linked with the job are Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Fulham's Marco Silva.

Leinster SHC final: Unflappable Kilkenny can contain the Galway bounce-back

Leinster GAA SHC final Kilkenny v Galway, Croke Park, Sunday 4pm Are Galway becoming a bit like the three-card trick merchants? Every year is the one that's going to be different. Honest. It has been some resurrection for Micheál Donoghue's team to proceed from the vacuous display in Nowlan Park seven weeks ago to being quietly reinstated as contenders for this weekend. Kilkenny in Leinster finals have been a constant source of grief for the westerners since they moved into the province. One win in eight is the running total, allowing that in 2018 the first match was a draw and they eventually won after a replay. Nearly all of those were comprehensive defeats or spectacular self-infliction, like 2020 and 2023. There is, however, some logic to the Galway revisions. They caned a Dublin team that Kilkenny had laboured to put away and even if the Dubs were unfathomably poor two weeks ago, their opponents' vigilant pressing and tactical nous were influential in forcing that. READ MORE Goals are again an issue, in that of the six teams in the Leinster round robin, only Antrim managed fewer green flags than Galway but no side has hit more points. Of course, when Donoghue guided the county to the 2017 All-Ireland, they notably scored no goals in four of their five championship matches. This, predictably, isn't a concern for their opponents, who with 15 have top-scored in championship goals to date. The team hasn't been tweaked much, let alone overhauled, but Derek Lyng continues to get the most out of them. Injuries have stalked selections and Eoin Cody is missing again with hamstring trouble but TJ Reid perseveres and has bagged 4-22 in the last three matches, 3-2 from play. There was the now traditional reverse against Wexford on the last day but that was a dead rubber from Kilkenny's perspective. For that match, Lyng ran an experiment of Adrian Mullen at centre back. It may have been whimsy but presumably there was some level of curiosity as to how the unusual placing of an All Star front eight player would fare and how sustainable the attack might be in his absence. The challenge for Galway is how dependable their opponents are. Kilkenny are on a six-in-a-row in Leinster despite having hardly impacted on the All-Ireland championship during that time. They will turn up and play to a guaranteed level. [ Galway's Cathal Mannion only too aware of Kilkenny's extra-time threat Opens in new window ] They will be more attentive in marking Galway's players and not leaving the gaps that Dublin did nor yielding the same stream of turnovers. David Burke had an excellent match in Parnell Park and his distribution will be a key factor for them. Donoghue has a good record in Leinster finals, having won two titles in three years during his first tenure. They will press hard and in the repurposed Conor Whelan and the prolific Cathal Mannion they have All Star quality forwards in form. Kilkenny's consistency and application, however, look more persuasive. Verdict : Kilkenny Kilkenny : E.
