Security a major focus as Albanese, G7 confront a turbulent world
Canberra/Calgary | Australia will open formal talks with Europe on a defence pact and aims to deepen military ties with Canada as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strengthens security partnerships to counter US isolationism and unpredictability, Chinese militarism, Russian aggression and fresh Middle East turmoil.
As Albanese and fellow democratic leaders gather for the Group of 7 summit in Canada, they are grappling with a world that is increasingly unstable, polarised and hostile geopolitically.

Donald Trump leaves G7 early and cancels meeting with Anthony Albanese
US President Donald Trump is leaving the G7 Summit early due to the conflict in the Middle East, which means his meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is off. White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, has posted to X confirming the reasons why the US president is leaving the conference in Canada. 'President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer,' Leavitt said. 'Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.' It is a major blow for Albanese who had hoped to raise key issues with the Commander in Chief in their first ever face to face meeting. US tariffs remain on Australia's metals and beef exports, and the White House has also announced a snap review of the AUKUS submarines project. Only minutes before Trump's early departure was announced, Albanese was still confident the meeting would take place. The PM was asked at a press conference, 'Are you concerned you'll get your whole time slot with him?' To which he replied, 'I look forward to the meeting.'

Anthony Albanese's meeting with Donald Trump cancelled as US president leaves G7 summit
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's highly anticipated first meeting with United States President Donald Trump will not go ahead on the sidelines of the G7 in Canada. The two leaders were expected to discuss US steel and aluminium tariffs on Australian goods as well as the AUKUS deal, which is being reviewed in Washington. Hours after striking a trade deal with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump has decided to leave the G7 early due to the escalations between Israel and Iran in the Middle East. US press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had a "great day at the G7" as she revealed news on social media on Tuesday morning. "Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State," she said on X. Moments before the post was shared, Albanese had told the media he looked forward to their discussion. This is a developing story and this article will be updated.
