Neo Maema believes he had long earned his ticket to the Fifa Club World Cup โ€” hence he never doubted he would make Mamelodi Sundowns' final squad.
Sundowns jetted off to Florida, US, on Sunday to begin their preparations for the global showpiece. Maema, sporting a short blonde hairstyle, was in high spirits at OR Tambo International, even vlogging for the club's social media platform, Mamelodi Sundowns TV.
The 29-year-old's outlook was refreshing, given that he has been a bystander for the team this season, featuring in only 17 of 54 matches across all competitions. Despite his limited game-time, Maema had shone for the Brazilians in the previous two seasons, contributing significantly to their success both domestically and continentally.

As such, when coach Miguel Cardoso announced his final squad for the tournament, Maema had no doubts about securing his place.
'I always knew that I'd make the squad. It's not arrogance โ€” I just feel this is the reward for the work done by the players who were here two years ago,' the Sundowns attacker said.
'We qualified for the Club World Cup two seasons ago, I think. So, when you're still in the team, you just have to eat the fruit of the work you've put in. So, I am happy.
'I am disappointed for the ones who didn't make it, but that's the nature of the competition. It's a big club. I feel for them because they are my brothers.'
Maema's limited involvement this season has fuelled speculation about his future at Sundowns, but he remained tight-lipped on the matter on Sunday.
'I'm not going to say anything about my future at the club. I am still a Mamelodi Sundowns player,' Maema affirmed.

The Club World Cup will not only offer Maema a chance to buy himself more time at the club but also serve as an opportunity for Sundowns to seek some form of redemption.
Sundowns missed out on the CAF Champions League crown two weeks ago, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids of Egypt in the final. That result was a bitter blow for the Brazilians, who had hoped to be third-time lucky after semi-final exits in the previous two seasons.
'It's disappointing to get close to the door, but we kept on knocking and it didn't open,' Maema said of their failed continental campaign.
'We knew it was going to be very difficult to win away. We played against a good teamโ€ฆ and when things don't go your way, you can't play your normal football.
'It's a pain in the heart, but we have to move on. We lost out twice in a row in the semi-finals, so we don't want that to happen again. We have to bounce back quickly.'
Sundowns have been drawn in Group F at the Club World Cup, alongside Ulsan Hyundai, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. They will open their campaign against Ulsan on Wednesday, 18 June.
The Brazilians are eager to perform well on the global stage โ€” not just to redeem themselves but also to showcase their talent to scouts from overseas clubs.
'It's disappointing, but there's nothing we can do about it. We just have to accept it and, as men, help the youngsters in the team,' Maema said.
'We have to believe that someday we will win it, but for now, we must focus on the opportunity ahead and see it as a chance for everyone to showcase their talent.'

Broos' young Bafana see off Mozambique in Polokwane

Bafana Bafana delivered a satisfactory performance to beat Mozambique 2-0 in their friendly in a freezing Polokwane on Tuesday night, making it a mission accomplished for coach Hugo Broos as almost all the new faces he selected for this camp came to the party. After drawing 0-0 against Tanzania in the first of this month's two friendlies on Friday, Broos' young Bafana were out to get a win to prove they can perform without Mamelodi Sundowns' players, who were not selected because of the club leaving for the US to play in the Club World Cup. Newcomers in the squad like Mohau Nkota; Ashley Cupido, the scorer of the 70th-minute second goal on Tuesday, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi put in solid shifts, giving Broos options and depth in selection options for the future. โ’ผโ“„โ’ถโ“: Bafana Bafana finally break the deadlock! ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ 1โƒฃโž–0โƒฃ ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ ๐Œ๐จ๐ณ๐š๐ฆ๐›๐ข๐ช๐ฎ๐ž ๐Ÿšจ LIVE ๐Ÿ“บ SABC 3 ๐Ÿ“ฑ ๐ŸŒ #SABCSportFootball โ€” SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 10, 2025 Chippa United's Sinoxolo Kwayiba provided the 47th-minute opener at Peter Mokaba Stadium. South Africa were all over the Mambas from the first whistle, creating a series of clear-cut chances in quick succession. It was the visitors' 28-year-old Mozambique goalkeeper Ivane Urrubal who made sure Bafana did not find the back of the net in the first half, producing seven excellent saves. Orlando Pirates' "Cocomelons", Relebohile Mofokeng and Nkota, were the recipients of South Africa's first chances inside the first minute but Urrubal was equal to the task. The keeper denied Mofokeng again 10 minutes later in a one-vs-one situation, using a trailing leg to thwart his goal-bound effort. โ’ผโ“„โ’ถโ“: Bafana Bafana have doubled their lead! ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ 2โƒฃโž–0โƒฃ ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ ๐Œ๐จ๐ณ๐š๐ฆ๐›๐ข๐ช๐ฎ๐ž ๐Ÿšจ LIVE ๐Ÿ“บ SABC 3 ๐Ÿ“ฑ ๐ŸŒ #SABCSportFootball โ€” SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 10, 2025 Kwayiba is another Bafana player who was hard done by Urrubal's brilliance in the opening 45 minutes, where Mozambique never made a box entry. Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who would be replaced by newcomer Renaldo Leaner in the 67th minute, was like a man on holiday throughout the first half. The first period had a few stoppages, the longest coming when Bafana right-back Nyiko Mobbie collided with Mozambique left-back Edmilson Dove, whose contract with Kaizer Chiefs ends this month. Mobbie had to soldier on until the 76th minute after suffering a head injury, before being replaced by Deano van Rooyen. After such a dominant first-half display, though without scoring, it fell to Bafana's first attempt of the second half from a set-piece for Urrubal to be beaten, courtesy of Kwayiba's header. The Chippa midfielder rose smartly to head home Nkota's corner. Cupido, who replaced Yanela Mbuthuma in the 67th, put the game to bed with a delightful finish just three minutes after entering the fray, collected and finishing a loose ball after Dove's error.

Bafana find their fire to blaze past Mozambique

Hugo Broos' men after far too good for the Mambas. Sinoxolo Kwayiba celebrates after opening the scoring for Bafana against Mozambique on Tuesday. Picture: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix First Bafana Bafana goals from Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Ashley Cupido handed a much-improved South Africa a 2-0 win over Mozambique in an international friendly at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Tuesday. ALSO READ: Sundowns' Williams targets knockout spot at Club World Cup Kwayiba and Cupido struck in the second half of a dominant performance from Hugo Broos' side, that made a pleasant change after the listless goalless draw against Tanzania on Friday. A whole new Bafana As expected, Hugo Broos changed his entire eleven for the clash with the Mambas, Mbekezeli Mbokazi making his debut in central defence alongside captain and Pirates teammate Nkosinathi Sibisi. Left back Samukele Kabini and striker Yanele Mbuthuma also made their first senior international stats. Bafana threatened more in attack in the first 45 minutes against Mozambique than they had in the entire game against Tanzania. The opening period, indeed, was basically a case of South Africa versus Mozambican goalkeeper Ivan Urrubal. In the early stages, Mohau Nkota fired in a shot that was parried by Urrubal. The Mamba's goalkeeper then produced an even better save to deny Relebohile Mofokeng. Mofokeng broke clean through on goal soon after but Urrubal stopped his effort at close range. Urrubal also kept out Kwayiba and Nkota in quick succession, in a performance that must have caught the attention of some Premier Soccer League sides' Nkota was causing no end of problems to Mozambique in his first Bafana start, after coming off the bench against Tanzania. The Pirates winger spun on the edge of the box and let fly with a shot that flew inches over the bar. Five minutes before the break, the excellent Mofokeng again tested Urrubal, his rocket from just outside the area, tipped wide by the Mozambican 'keeper. Kwayiba comes up trumps If Bafana went in at half time wondering how on earth they were not in front, it took Broos' men inside two minutes of the second half to take the lead. Nkota's far post corner was powerfully headed past Urrubal by Kwayiba. In the 55th minute, Nkota cut in from the right and unleashed another piledriver, which was tipped away by Urrubal. ALSO READ: Bafana's Sibisi vows to help Pirates teammate Cupido came off the bench to replace Mbuthuma and netted within three minutes. A horrendous mistake at the back handed possession to Nkota and he laid the ball off for the Stellenbosch striker to thunder past Urrubal and into the top corner of the net.

Rivals overtake Kaizer Chiefs in race for Mamelodi Sundowns star

Kaizer Chiefs are still searching the market to add some top attacking talents to their side for next season. Chiefs have struggled for goals in the past three seasons and missed out on the top eight again last season. There have been quite a few attackers linked with Chiefs going into the next season. This as a sign of what they're trying to fix in the final third. Amakhosi have seen the likes of Fiston Mayele, Etiosa Ighodaro, Robert Polievka mentioned as strikers. In the wingers department Oswin Appollis, Elias Mokwana, Mihlali Mayambela and Keletso Makgalwa have been touted. Another player who was also linked with Chiefs not too long ago was Mamelodi Sundowns star Thapelo Maseko. The player has not had the best of times since joining Masandawana, getting very limited game time so far. His situation took an even worse turn after being left out by the side for their FIFA Club World Cup exploits. The rumours of Maseko joining Chiefs have gone quiet recently and its now his former side SuperSport United being mentioned. According to Soccer-Laduma , talks of a return Matsatsantsa are at an advanced stage! 'SuperSport United wanted him initially on loan in January before they got Lebohang Maboe but things didn't work out that time. Now they are working on a permanent deal for Maseko and apparently it's believed that it's imminent,' said a source to the same publication. A well placed source also told the same publication that Maseko was no longer in the Sundowns plans. 'You see those players who went to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup are the core of Sundowns. Their contracts and future is safe. Thapelo Maseko was left behind so that he could finalise his move back to SuperSport United and now it's believed that the deal is imminent,' said the source.
