Guwahati: Newly constructed bus sheds across Guwahati, which were hailed as a step toward modernising public transport infrastructure, are drawing sharp criticism from residents over poor maintenance and unfulfilled promises.
Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), which had launched the initiative with much fanfare, now finds itself under fire for failing to ensure basic upkeep and delivery of key amenities.
A year after GMC announced the installation of modern bus sheds across 45 locations in the city under a Rs 300 crore project, residents have raised serious concerns over the absence of promised facilities and poor on-ground execution.
The project launched with the intention of revamping public transport infrastructure, promised state-of-the-art bus stops, equipped with CCTV cameras for public safety, bus information panels and detailed route maps for the assistance of the daily commuters. However, residents said that the sheds do not offer any of these features.
"It is really dangerous to travel at night. These modern infrastructures have been built for public convenience, which is good, but if there are no safety measures in place, then what's the point?," Nabamita Das, a daily commuter, said.

Many commuters echoed her concerns, highlighting the poor maintenance of the sheds. They said in areas like Six Mile and Maligaon, the sheds are in a neglected state, with little to no upkeep.
Meanwhile, passengers, particularly college students and newcomers to the city, face significant hurdles in navigating Guwahati's public transport system. "The absence of these basic information not only causes delays but also discourages new passengers from relying on city's bus services," said Anil Kakoti, a college student.
When questioned about the missing amenities, GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania initially said there were no such plans for facilities like CCTV cameras or route maps at the bus sheds. However, he later clarified that the matter would be taken up in an upcoming review meeting. "Whatever was agreed upon will be implemented as per the terms. Within a day or two, these concerns will be addressed during the review," he added.

Indian EV Industry being hurt by additional restrictions on rare earth minerals by China: Jefferies
The EV companies in the country is already facing heat with China's supply restrictions on the rare earth metals, according to a report by Jefferies. The Jefferies report highlighted that several Indian companies are struggling to import magnets from China, which are crucial components in the production of EV motors. The report warned that once the current stock of these magnets runs out, motor production could be severely affected, putting the entire supply chain at risk . Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) too have echoed the sentiment and in its monthly vehicle data release on Friday said "Global supply-chain headwinds (rare-earth constraints in EV components, geopolitical tensions) may limit urban consumer sentiment and exert cost pressure." Live Events To deal with the situation, companies are considering importing fully assembled motors from China. However, this option comes with challenges. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) would have to make major changes in their supply chains. Additionally, vehicles might require fresh homologation approvals to meet Indian standards. This shift could also lead to a drop in domestic value addition, which is essential to qualify for the government's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. China had earlier, on April 4, imposed export controls on six heavy rare earth elements (REEs) and rare earth magnets. The country cited reasons like national security and international obligations such as non-proliferation. Although these curbs are not a complete ban on exports for the auto sector, companies must now seek prior government approval before shipping these materials out of China. This adds uncertainty and delay in the supply process. The report also mentioned that the Indian government is aware of the growing risks. According to a Reuters report on Friday, India is in discussions with various companies to build long-term stockpiles of rare earth magnets. As part of this plan, Indian government is likely to offer fiscal incentives to promote domestic production of these crucial components. Contrary to their name, rare earth elements, especially the lighter ones, are not actually rare in the Earth's crust. But they are spread out in low concentrations, which makes extraction and processing difficult. The global supply chain for these elements is heavily dependent on China, which currently accounts for about 70 per cent of the world's mined REEs and roughly 90 per cent of refined production. China also produces nearly 90 per cent of the world's rare earth magnets, especially the heavy rare earths. With China now increasing its restrictions even further, the supply chain could face more disruptions in the coming months, posing a serious threat to India's EV sector.

Rate relief cheered: Auto industry backs RBI's 50 bps repo cut; expects boost in affordability, retail demand
India's automobile sector has welcomed the Reserve Bank of India's latest rate-cut move, calling it a timely intervention that could improve financing access, strengthen consumer sentiment, and support overall retail growth. On Friday, the RBI reduced the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5% and cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points to 3%. The CRR reduction will be implemented in four tranches of 25 basis points each, starting September 6, and is expected to infuse liquidity of Rs 2.5 lakh crore into the banking system. According to ANI, Shailesh Chandra, President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Passenger Vehicles Ltd & Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, welcomed the move. 'Such a reduction in repo rates would have a positive impact on the auto sector since it would lead to increased accessibility to finance at reduced costs, thereby creating a positive sentiment amongst the consumers in the market,' he said. Anish Shah, Group CEO and Managing Director of Mahindra Group, also endorsed the RBI's decision. 'This move demonstrates the RBI's confidence in the macroeconomic fundamentals and its proactive approach to supporting sustainable expansion,' he said. 'The rate cut will serve as a positive catalyst for consumption and investment, particularly in interest-sensitive sectors such as automobiles, housing, and MSMEs. ' Echoing similar views, Venkatram Mamillapalle, Country CEO & Managing Director of Renault India, said the move comes at the right time and will support consumer affordability. 'This policy is expected to strengthen liquidity and accelerate the transmission of lower interest rates to consumers, which will spur demand in the economy,' he said. 'For the automotive sector, this translates directly into improved access to affordable vehicle financing, especially in the entry and mid-level segments. ' He added that he remains optimistic about growth in the auto industry for FY 2025–26, supported by strong macroeconomic indicators and evolving consumer confidence. 'The RBI's proactive measures are poised to spur automotive retail, enhance customer affordability, and strengthen the economic cycle,' he said. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported a 5% year-on-year rise in vehicle retail sales for May. However, the body cautioned that global supply chain issues — from rare-earth shortages affecting EV production to broader geopolitical tensions — may continue to influence urban consumer sentiment. FADA noted that the RBI's latest rate and CRR cuts would serve as a 'major boost' to the sector. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
