Uggah envisions cleaner, progressive, people-centric Betong in the next three years

KUCHING (April 24): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has laid out an ambitious vision for a cleaner, more progressive, and people-friendly Betong over the next three years.
Speaking after witnessing the swearing-in of the new Betong District Council chairman and 30 councillors for the 2025–2028 term today, Uggah said the council holds a vital role in shaping the district's future.
'The Betong District Council will have a lot to do from now.
'I want it to work out plans and strategies for a more progressive and developed and clean Betong town and district in three years from now,' he said in a statement.
Uggah expressed hopes for Betong to become a benchmark for cleanliness in Sarawak.
'In terms of cleanliness, I want it to be one of, if not, the cleanest in the state.Toward this end, we are exploring options like waste segregation disposal, recycling, composing and also an incinerator.
'We cannot depend on landfills or for people to simply treat their rivers as convenient waste disposal places. These will only contribute to polluting our environment and rivers,' he said, adding that the council should place strong focus on public education.
On tourism, Uggah highlighted Betong's vast untapped potential.
'We have much to offer like our pristine nature, flora and fauna, culture, our traditional longhouses and others.
'We are also getting better connected through roads and more so when the Bebuling Airport project is targeted to be ready toward the end of the year,' he said.
He also revealed that construction of a RM16 million replica fortress and supporting facilities at Bukit Sadok — honouring legendary Iban warrior Rentap — is scheduled to begin this year.
Uggah noted that a proposal for a new, iconic Betong District Council building had already been submitted to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Addressing the newly appointed councillors, he reminded them of their critical role at the grassroots level.
'We need your help in informing the people of the many policies and programmes for the people's well being and betterment and in generating better income.
'We also need your feedback if they had indeed benefitted them and how well they had been implemented. So it is absolutely vital that we all continue to work as a cohesive team,' he said.
He added that the Sarawak Cabinet has decided that all council leaders will now be referred to as 'Chairman' instead of the previously used term 'Walikota', which is deemed unsuitable for the state.
Meanwhile, Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, who now chairs the council, called on fellow councillors to maintain high standards of governance.
'Serve with full dedication, transparency and integrity. Whatever decisions we are making should benefit the people,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration, to celebrate the contributions of media practitioners to the country, will kick off today at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). REHDA warns 6pct SST will drive up home prices
KUALA LUMPUR: The Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (REHDA) Malaysia has cautioned that the newly imposed 6 per cent Sales and Service Tax (SST) on construction services will increase operational costs for developers and ultimately drive up home prices. While acknowledging the Ministry of Finance's recent announcement on the revised SST structure aimed at boosting government revenue, REHDA expressed concern over the unintended consequences this tax could have on the property sector. "We have yet to determine the exact impact, but we expect the move will lead to a slowdown in the market as developers make adjustments to their plans," said president of the association, Datuk Ir Ho Hon Sang. He noted that the Association had previously engaged in consultations with the government to seek clarification and to highlight the tax's possible repercussions on the industry. "The industry is already bearing indirect taxes on construction-related items such as building materials and labour. The addition of the SST will only add to our burden. To maintain fairness, we sincerely hope that the SST will not be applied retrospectively. "Any price hike adjusted to contracts signed prior to the effective date could result in cost overruns which left developers with no choice but to absorb the additional cost," he said. While the exemption for residential buildings and public housing-related amenities offers partial relief, REHDA remains concerned about developments built on commercial land, particularly serviced apartments in mixed-use projects. "In today's urban landscape, especially in city centres, where residential units are often part of mixed developments due to land scarcity, subjecting these units to SST will inevitably lead to increased housing prices, ultimately impacting homebuyers who will have to bear the brunt," Ho said. Ho warned that low-income buyers, including those who purchase affordable homes under programs like Rumah Madani, Rumah Selangorku, and Rumah Mesra Rakyat, will also be adversely affected if their homes are located on commercial land. Additionally, several local authorities require commercial components such as shop lots within strata residential schemes. These units, along with internal infrastructure built within the development, will also be subjected to the SST, further inflating costs, he said in a statement. REHDA is appealing to the government to delay the implementation, currently scheduled in about two weeks, and proposes a grace period until 2026. "We respectfully request the government to consider postponing the implementation date, currently set for approximately two weeks from now. Many of our SME members have yet to register with the Inland Revenue Board and a grace period until 2026 would provide sufficient time for them to make the necessary preparations."

KWAP, MFF INK MOU TO ACCELERATE BIODIVERSITY, NET ZERO GOALS
KUALA LUMPUR: The Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday with the Malaysia Forest Fund (MFF) aimed at advancing Malaysia's sustainability agenda through forest-based solutions. The partnership is a step in supporting Malaysia's transition to a net-zero economy and reinforces KWAP's commitment to achieve Net Zero Portfolio by 2050, a key element of its broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy. The signing ceremony, held in conjunction with the KWAP Inspire Satellite 2025 event and witnessed by Secretary General of the Treasury and KWAP's chairman Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, marks the beginning of a collaboration to advance forest conservation and nature-based solutions (NBS). This MoU also supports the development of credible and scalable national carbon credits to help KWAP's investee companies meet their decarbonisation goals. KWAP chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Nik Amlizan Mohamed said, 'The collaboration with MFF will be a game-changer for both KWAP and Malaysia's broader sustainability efforts. 'As a responsible institutional investor, KWAP is committed to driving stewardship through impactful actions and pursuing purpose beyond returns. 'By contributing to the development of a credible, nationally anchored carbon ecosystem, we aim to empower our investee companies with the tools they need to meet their net-zero commitment while also making significant contributions to Malaysia's climate and biodiversity goals.' The MoU features the Forest Conservation Certificate (FCC) to support domestic conservation initiatives, focusing on preserving Malaysia's vital biodiversity and ecosystems. MFF will also oversee development of the Forest Carbon Offset (FCO), a market-based mechanism that allows companies to offset their emissions through investments in forest conservation projects that reduce, remove and avoid carbon emissions. Through this MoU, KWAP has become a participant in the National Forest Carbon Offset (FCO) technical working group (TWG), established by MFF. The group aims to ensure the needs of institutional investors – including the nuances of ESG investing, are integrated into the framework, where relevant. This participation will also help align FCO standards with international carbon market requirements and best practices. These initiatives, aligned with Malaysia's National Climate Change Policy 2.0, aim to drive knowledge-sharing and capacity-building efforts to enhance participants' skills in forest management and carbon offsetting. This includes supporting the achievement of targets such as a 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and Net Zero GHG Emissions by 2050, as well as Malaysia's commitment to maintaining at least 50% forest and tree cover. MFF CEO Datuk Shah Redza Hussein said, 'This collaboration with KWAP is a pivotal step in our mission to strengthen Malaysia's carbon market, achieving the nation's sustainability targets and accelerating meaningful climate action. 'By leveraging nature-based solutions, particularly through the Forest Conservation Certificate and the upcoming Forest Carbon Offset, we are creating a pathway for businesses towards achieving net-zero goals while supporting forest conservation, aligning with national climate commitments. 'Our work with KWAP and other stakeholders will drive long-term environmental and economic benefits, not only for Malaysia but for the global community as we strive towards a greener and more resilient future.' The collaboration puts KWAP as a sustainability thought leader, enhancing its reputation in the financial sector while contributing valuable insights to both domestic and international markets. By exploring potential integration of nature-based solutions into its ESG investment and non-investment strategies, KWAP reinforces its role in advancing Malaysia's decarbonisation agenda and setting a strong example for other institutional investors. This collaboration represents a critical next step in KWAP's broader commitment to empowering partnerships that drive collective action for sustainability, as outlined in its Sustainability Pledge 2, 'Empower Partnerships for Collective Action.'
