Three key amendments to SST following feedback

PETALING JAYA: The government has announced three key amendments to the Sales and Service Tax (SST) following public and industry feedback since the revision was unveiled on June 9.
In a statement yesterday, the Finance Ministry said the amendments include exempting certain imported fruits from sales tax, raising the service tax threshold for rental and financial services to RM1 million and dropping the proposed tax on beauty services.
'After due consideration on the feedback received with respect to sales tax on imported fruits, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance minister, agreed to exempt imported apples, oranges, mandarin oranges and dates from sales tax.
'The ministry would like to reiterate that the Madani government has not imposed sales tax on daily essential goods in order to mitigate pressure on the cost of living for the majority of Malaysians.
'These tax-exempted essential goods, whether locally produced or imported, include rice, chicken, beef, vegetables and eggs. Local fish varieties, including selar, tongkol, cencaru, and sardines will also continue to be exempt from sales tax.'
To ease the burden on small businesses, Anwar has approved an increase in the service tax registration threshold from RM500,000 to RM1 million for leasing, rental, and financial services.
'Additionally, after carefully considering public sentiment, the government has also decided not to proceed with the proposed expansion of service tax on beauty services such as manicure and pedicure, facial service, barbers and hairdressers,' said the ministry.

Engineer loses RM275,000 to online 'Moomoo' investment scam

ALOR SETAR: A 57-year-old engineer lost RM275,000 after falling for an online investment scam known as 'Moomoo', which was advertised on Facebook in April. Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Loi Yew Lik said the victim responded to an investment offer involving Chinese currency on April 20 by clicking a WhatsApp link, which led him to a group called '6 Investment Securuties Internasional'. He later communicated with several individuals using the numbers 019-2007253 and 019-2345678. "The scammers promised a 10% return within days, prompting the victim to transfer RM275,000 in eight transactions between May 27 and June 13 to two company accounts under the names Cisi Infra Solution and Cisi CPT Infra Trading," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 29). When no profits were received, the victim grew suspicious as the scammers continued requesting more money, claiming it was needed to release his returns and initial capital. He eventually lodged a police report at the Baling District Police Headquarters on Saturday after realising he had been cheated. Loi advised the public to verify any investment offers with the police or nearby stations and to use tools such as the Mule Check app, the CCID Facebook page, or contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997. - Bernama

Mayor: MBKS pushes for parking digitalisation to replace coupon system

A screengrab of Wee during the 'Shall WEE Talk' session yesterday. KUCHING (June 29): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is pushing for the digitalisation of its parking system, aiming to scrap the use of physical coupons. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said they are looking at introducing a mobile application to facilitate the payment of parking fees within the MBKS jurisdiction. 'This proposal will be submitted to the State Cabinet for approval in July, and is expected to take form in either July or August. 'We are not trying to make things difficult, but digitalisation will offer greater convenience and is more friendly to users,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. In the process of digitalising the parking system, Wee said the personnel involved with issuing overparking compounds will be gradually reduced. He felt that it is time to embrace digitalisation, a transformation that people of all ages cannot run away from. On the implementation of e-invoicing and expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST), the Mayor said the government should take the people into consideration before introducing any new policy. He said people are bound to voice their dissatisfaction if the government implements a new policy without seeking consultations from the relevant stakeholders. 'When a new policy is implemented in a rush, enterprises and people on the ground will find it hard to adapt to it, thereby eroding public confidence on the government of the day. 'Government policies are not experimental trials but get to decide the survival of enterprises and the livelihoods of our people,' he added. To make sure that people can cushion the impact of the rising cost of living, Wee said the government should work on ensuring that its policies would not create further financial burden amid the current economic slowdown. He added that the government must ensure financial stability while introducing new policies so that people can have better planning for their livelihoods. 'It is not that we cannot cooperate, but we need sufficient time to plan and adapt to new policies.' As such, he called for comprehensive consultation and planning from the government before it introduces and implements any policy to avoid protesting voices from the various communities.
