To cut costs, Google offers voluntary exits in search, ads, and engineering teams
Google has offered voluntary buyouts to employees across several divisions, including its Search unit, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce its workforce, CNBC reported on Tuesday. The buyouts have been extended to workers in various departments such as knowledge and information (K-I), central engineering, marketing, research, and communications. The K-I division includes Google's major businesses like Search, Ads, and Commerce. According to CNBC, the move is part of Google's broader cost-cutting strategy, which began last year with the layoff of around 12,000 employees. The program, referred to as a 'voluntary exit program' (VEP), is currently offered to US-based employees. The exact number of employees affected by this latest offer has not been confirmed yet. Meanwhile, some teams are requiring remote employees who live within 50 miles of a Google office to begin working in a hybrid model to encourage more in-person collaboration. 'Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for US-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program to support our important work ahead,' Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini said in a statement to CNBC. The buyouts come at a time when Google is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence (AI). In October, the company's new finance chief, Anat Ashkenazi, named cost-cutting a top priority to fund future AI infrastructure spending. According to the report, K&I, which employs about 20,000 people, was reorganised in October, with executive Nick Fox taking charge. In a memo viewed by CNBC, Fox encouraged employees who are not aligned with the company's direction or struggling to meet expectations to consider the buyout. 'I want to be very clear: If you're excited about your work, energized by the opportunity ahead, and performing well, I really (really!) hope you don't take this!" Fox wrote. "We have ambitious plans and tons to get done. On the other hand, this VEP offers a supportive exit path for those of you who don't feel aligned with our strategy, don't feel energized by your work, or are having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role.' Amazon explains how Apple is driving India's premium boom and why nonstop sales still make sense
Not long ago, we at India Today Tech wrote an opinion piece about the rise of online sales in India and how most of them appear to be a Netflix show with far too many spin-offs. The idea was to understand – as a user – if they were 'a bit much' given how frequently e-commerce players are hosting them. Amazon is obviously one of them. But there are always two sides to a story, which is why, when we got a chance to speak directly to Amazon, we decided to talk about this aspect at length to try and understand the merits of some of these sales decisions and why they conversation – with Zeba Khan, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon India – was insightful and, frankly speaking, an eye-opener. With online sales as a focal point, we delved into India's – and invariably Amazon's – larger growth story expedited by growing premiumisation across quarters – and particularly consumer electronics – and reasons why more and more people want to buy premium products – and how Amazon is working round-the-clock to ensure they Amazon approach to consumer engagementHaving previously helmed Amazon India's fashion and beauty business, Khan offers a unique perspective on the similarities and differences in engaging consumers across diverse categories. Despite a muted overall market, premium devices (INR 30,000 and above) are experiencing strong double-digit growth, with Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities accounting for almost 70 percent of this demand, Khan the PC industry has faced headwinds, Amazon is observing good growth, particularly in the premium category in metros (double-digit growth) and the ultra-premium segment (INR 1,00,000 and above), which is soaring at over 30 percent year-on-year. The tablet segment is also rapidly expanding, with premium tablets (INR 30,000 and above) growing at a remarkable 60 percent year-on-year. Notably, 75 percent of premium tablet buyers are first-time purchasers, she adds. Moreover, premium smartwatches (INR 10,000 and above) are seeing a robust 40 percent year-on-year growth after a period of stagnation.'It indicates that our efforts in educating customers about premium selections and improving affordability are moving in the right direction,' Khan says, attributing this success to Amazon's focus on democratising access to the latest technology and making it affordable through various options. Value-added services like phone and laptop setup, installation, and extended warranties, consistently rated 4.85 stars and above across 300 cities, further bolster customer confidence in these high-value India's potentialAmazon's success in this premiumisation wave is not just about product availability but also about reach. Khan credits the operational prowess of Amazon's teams for servicing '100 percent of serviceable PIN codes in India – which, in a country of this scale, is no small feat.' This extensive network, coupled with continuous efforts to improve delivery speeds and seamless inventory management with vendor and seller partners, ensures that aspirational products are accessible even in the farthest corners of the country.'All of this is driving aspirations upward. For example, a person in a Tier 3 town today wants access to the latest technology,' Khan explains. 'This is where Amazon plays a very critical role because we make it available not only to the last PIN code in India but also make it as affordable as possible.'Apple driving the premium smartphone boomWhen asked specifically about Apple's influence, Khan acknowledges its significant contribution to the premium smartphone segment. 'Apple is a premium smartphone brand that is growing very well. On our platform as well, the premium smartphone segment is the fastest growing for us, and Apple is one of the key brands driving that growth,' she highlights that customers often approach smartphone purchases with a specific brand in mind, and Amazon's role is to facilitate that journey. 'Our role as a retailer is to ensure that we're providing them with the most transparent, complete, and accurate information on our product detail pages,' she says. By offering detailed visuals, videos, expert recommendations, and customer reviews, Amazon empowers consumers to confidently make premium smartphone purchases sale season never endsClearly, the consumer's appetite for premium products is growing – and so are online sales. While it might seem like 'too many sales,' Khan says there is a method to this madness. 'As retailers, our attempt is to create demand moments and meaningful shopping experiences for our customers – across different needs and customer cohorts,' she the major events like Diwali and Prime Day, Amazon has found tremendous value in creating topical and seasonal sales. Khan cites the example of the 'Electronics Premier League' in March 2025, which timed strategically with the IPL season. 'It was an experimental event for us, and we went in with a learning mindset. But we were pleasantly surprised by how well it performed.' The theme of 'streaming and screening' brought together relevant categories like smartphones, TVs, laptops, and speakers, contextualising the need for upgrades around a popular cultural customers who may not have been actively thinking about upgrading their devices suddenly considered it because we contextualised it for them,' Khan notes. Similarly, 'Back to School' events for laptops and tablets, and 'Gaming Days' catering to a niche, engaged audience, have proven highly successful. 'While it may appear that there are many sales happening, the reality is that each of them serves a distinct purpose and audience,' Khan concludes. 'As long as we can continue to curate experiences that are relevant and meaningful to each cohort, I believe that's the recipe for success.'The first half of the year was strong. Khan remains optimistic about the other half. 'We're now working towards Prime Day, especially in consumer electronics, which is typically a very new-launch-heavy category. We're partnering with a lot of brands for some exciting launches,' she reveals. 'The big moments – Prime Day and the festive season – are yet to come.'Defining success through internal growth milestones and broader industry performance, Khan expresses satisfaction with Amazon's performance so far and hopes that with the right initiatives, including strong partnerships and a nuanced approach to sales, it will continue to reap the benefits, lapping up customers as India ramps up its premiumisation drive.

Apple Liquid Glass may look like a mess but there is likely a method behind this messiness
A day ago, Apple announced a major redesign of its software. Across devices, which includes iPhone and Mac, the company is going to bring a new design language that it calls Liquid Glass. For a tech company whose products and services are used by millions of people, any software redesign is a major endeavour. For a company like Apple whose devices are used by over two billion people, it is almost a monumental task. Most significantly, it is arguably the single biggest product decision Apple can take given its reputation for design and am sure Apple must have considered all of it. And then must have decided that Liquid Glass is the way to go for Apple's first step? Well, it is not so assured as you will notice if you go to social media and search for iOS 26. Rather, this is putting it mildly. It is a proper mess at the moment. The Liquid Glass interface, as Apple envisions it, looks great in concept. But in practice, as people are pointing out after downloading the developer beta of iOS 26 and macOS 26, it is prone to chaos. Transparency in interface is always tricky, and glass effects, complete with glinting light make an interface way too performative at the cost of usability. This is what early users are discovering. The transparency is leading to instances where text is too jumbled because of different layers and is not very readable. This is particularly apparent with iOS 26 control centre, something that social media users are gleefully sharing as a failure of imagination and aesthetic sense from instances of 'failures' are many. Then there are a few more complications that the Liquid Glass brings to the user interface. The contrast between colours and layers seems off in certain use cases because of transparency. Similarly, different layers or busy user interfaces, where you have lots of buttons, are looking like scrambled mess. The chatter on social media from all those who love Apple, as well as those who don't, seems to be unequivocal — this Liquid Glass is not gonna flow. In some instances, the Liquid Glass design of iOS 26 can be a mess. But I feel most people are missing some nuances in this conversation. They are also focussed more on Liquid Glass 'fails' instead of looking at the whole thing with a bit more attention. It is true that parts of the interface, as evident by the messy control centre in the IOS 26, are problem areas. But I feel these are also niggles that would be fixed in the next few months as Apple prepares the software for public release around September-October. The Liquid Glass is something new, it is something extremely ambitious and tricky. It will take time before Apple can iron out the I feel Apple knows this. As a tech journalist whenever I have felt like criticising a tech product, I have always first taken a step back to think about it with a bit more thoroughness. This is because companies like Apple and Google don't make stupid mistakes. They have way too many smart people, way too many resources, way too many methods and tools to make silly and stupid mistakes. Instead, they make product calls, and when they do it, they do so knowing fully well the problems and potential of the calls that they are is not to say that tech giants don't make mistakes. But they make strategic mistakes. However thorough you are in the lab, the real world can undo all your hard-work with its unpredictability. The users have their own way of using the products, and while Apple and Google might hope they can bend their users to their will and taste, it doesn't always work silly and stupid mistakes are rare. And I don't think Liquid Glass is a mistake, not in the sense people on social media are saying it is. I believe Apple has some good reasons to go with Liquid Display, and they know that it is going to be challenging but they also know that the effort is going to be worth it. It is a call they have of futureThe more interesting question is why has Apple chosen Liquid Glass interface? Now, obviously I am not privy to their product decisions but I feel that the company might have decided on this interface language due to the future it imagines for its products. Because nothing else will make as much sense as are that Apple sees a future where screens are going to be translucent or transparent. It also probably believes that the interface is going to move away from buttons to voice, where the feedback to user input on the screen would be with light and glow effects, somewhat similar to how Siri works on such a world, Liquid Display could be the perfect user interface for devices. I mean imagine an iPhone with a translucent display, or Apple AR glasses, which are set to arrive in a year or two, and then imagine the current software design on them. It would be ugly, and would even be non-functional in certain ways. Now imagine the same devices with the Liquid Glass interface — suddenly you will see how much more sense it makes. If you try to imagine the current iOS and macOS design on the futuristic iPhone and Mac, the whole thing looks very ugly. (AI generated image) advertisementApple is a company that tends to do stuff over the years. It will start something today but with an aim to iterate and use that for the next 10 years. The design interface it started with iOS 7 continued until now. That is a long time, and that also gives the indication that what the company is now starting with the Liquid Display is going to be here for a long time. The fact that the Liquid Glass has been created for future devices is amply highlighted by Apple's Alan Dye, who notes that 'it lays the foundation for new experiences in the future and, ultimately, it makes even the simplest of interactions more fun and magical.'advertisementWhen looked at in this context, the Liquid Glass makes a fair amount of sense. It is true that currently it is seemingly a mess and will require some serious tweaks from Apple to make it work on the current iPhones and Macs. But even there, I believe, the playfulness and the technical wizardry behind the 'liquid glassy' animations and interactions will woo most of the users by the end of this year. That is once Apple has fixed some of the teething I am not a fan of glassy or skeuomorphic designs. I find the leather look or glass look boring and unnecessarily complicated. Instead, I have always been a fan of flat 2D designs, which use layers and colours for all the functionality that they can offer. They are simple and effective. I also prefer clean and straight lines on screen. In that sense, I have always loved what Google has done with its Material Design on Android, or what Windows tried to do — rather heavy-handedly — with Windows I find the Liquid Glass not all that appealing at the moment. But my opinion is also shaped by current devices that are available to us. And similar is the case for almost everyone who is slamming Apple on social media for the new iOS 26 or macOS. We are not (yet) thinking of the future in the way Apple is probably doing because in that future the Liquid Glass will probably be a perfect fit for the iPhone and the Mac of 2030.
