Uniquely is a Fresno Bee series that covers the moments, landmarks and personalities that define what makes living in the Fresno area so special.
Type 'Mt. Chipotle' into Google Maps and you'll find that the newest attraction in the Sierra Nevada now shows up with its own address.
Its name has reached beyond Central California and into Los Angeles, the Bay Area and other countries in just a few weeks. It even has its own bluegrass/country song, selfie trend and merch crafted by local residents.
Residents who The Fresno Bee spoke to about Mt. Chipotle's saga know the famed (but unofficial) landmark is only temporary. To them, it's more than a pile of dirt sitting in a parking lot outside a Chipotle Mexican Grill — hence the mountain's name — in an Oakhurst shopping center.
'Since the election, this town's been grumpy,' said Larry Townsend, the Oakhurst photographer credited as being of Mt. Chipotle's pioneers. 'This was a way to have fun.'
Rumors began spreading Thursday on social media that this weekend could be Mt. Chipotle's last, prompting plans for a free concert at the mountain at 5 p.m. Sunday.
The family that owns the shopping center where Mt. Chipotle is located confirmed to The Bee on Friday that the viral mound will not be around forever.
'We're glad the community of Oakhurst has enjoyed Mt. Chipotle,' a family member said in an official statement. 'It will be used to develop the adjoining pad. It will be gone in the future.'
However, the owners did not confirm a specific timeline for Mt. Chipotle's removal.
Its road to stardom began with a Nov. 17 post by Carole Rebeiro in the Oakhurst Area Facebook Group: 'Has anyone hiked the Chipotle parking lot dirt mountain yet? What's the best route and how long did it take you? Thanks in advance!' she wrote.
Rebeiro told The Bee she was driving past the mound on her way to a hike with her sister when she first noticed it.
'I was laughing at how big it was and how ridiculous it was,' she said. 'Someone had put a flag on top of it.'
Then came Townsend, the local photographer, who had just celebrated his 70th birthday on Thanksgiving. He wanted to cross some things off of his bucket list.
'No, not Everest, K2, or the walls of El Cap, I'm talking about Mt. Chipotle rising to great heights in the quaint village of Oakhurst,' he wrote in a Dec. 6 post in the Oakhurst Area Facebook group. 'Not only was I going to climb it, but I was going to free solo it AND do it with no oxygen cylinders!'
Townsend planted his own American flag on Mt. Chipotle, and then came the mountain's fame.
Facebook users from all over began posting selfies of themselves atop Mt. Chipotle. Townsend posted about a sighting of Japanese tourists who stopped their bus at Mt. Chipotle. Other visitors have announced that they originated from Los Angeles and San Jose.
'Heard about Mt. Chipotle all the way in Alaska,' Facebook user Tina Booher posted in the Oakhurst Area group Dec. 23. 'My niece, the discoverer, said it was quite the site. Perfect timing as I'm visiting family for Christmas.'
A race to be 'the first' took off.
'I saw that somebody had posted the first ever haircut on top of Mt. Chipotle,' Robert Wood, of Mariposa, told The Bee. 'So I was thinking, 'If we're doing firsts, I'm going to play some music up there and have a little show.''
Wood rocked out for several hours atop Mt. Chipotle on New Year's Day as he played metal, blues and 'Pink Floyd-ish kind of stuff.'
He and local bands Big Timber and No County are planning to play the 'Save Mt. Chipotle' free show on Sunday. Wood said the he means 'save' jokingly and the event is just for the community's enjoyment.
Laurie Schalow, chief corporate affairs officer for Chipotle, wrote in an email statement to The Bee that although the company does not own the property, 'we appreciate that local residents are exploring 'Mt Chipotle' and we wish all climbers a safe trek up the summit.'
'The people of Oakhurst and their Chipotle fandom help fuel our mission to cultivate a better world,' Schalow wrote.
Several residents spoke in agreement about the impact Mt. Chipotle had on their community. Although it is an attraction that was created jokingly, Mt. Chipotle inspired unity in Oakhurst and provided a needed break from the tensions of 2024.
'An election year is a hard year,' said Rhonda Salisbury, CEO of the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau. 'This is just community spirit.'
Matt Sconce, a local English teacher and owner of the Yosemite Cinema in the same shopping center, said Oakhurst 'needed something to do together' after the divisiveness of the election.
He wrote a bluegrass/country rock song about Mt. Chipotle and produced it using digital programs. (The voice that sings the anthem is not his voice.)
'I thought, 'You know, if the little mountain goes away, we need something that endures, that we can always have fun and laugh with like it was still there,' ' Sconce told The Bee. ''It needs some sort of anthem that can kind of continue on.' '
The rise of Mt. Chipotle reminded him of 2013, when he said the Oakhurst community banded together to save the cinema he now owns. Sconce said such events reveal aspects of Oakhurst that outsiders may not be aware of.
'The people there, they'll come together and get things that they care about done or saved or launched,' he said. 'Every once in a while, Oakhurst will pop up on the national scale because the people there do band together. They aren't as fragmented as people think.'

This AI video generator is going viral, and it's completely free to use

AI video generators are having a bit of a moment. Whether it's Google's Veo 3, complete with audio integration, or something like Kling 2 or Runway that are creating movie-quality clips with ease, the technology has come a long way. But along with the big-name companies vying for the best AI video generator, there are some smaller underdogs of the AI video world. One that recently caught my eye was Hailouai. I kept seeing videos generated by the model popping up on sites like X, with users showing off their impressive generations. This isn't the first time we've talked about Haliuo, in fact, we were impressed by a major update it revealed late last year. But the AI company is back in people's minds with its most recent updated called the Director model. In this version, like a few other big AI video generators, you can input camera angles and movements, to give your videos a bit more action. This new update gives users on Hailuo a bit more control over what they are producing. It allows for the alteration of camera angles in prompts in two ways. Users can either choose from a pre-selection of options like 'downward tilt' or 'right walking' or they can come up with their own. Like most video generation experiences, creativity can either reward or hinder you. Sometimes, getting too complicated with camera angle suggestions resulted in a complete mess of an experience, or the model would ignore it completely. I found more success when using Hailuo by focusing on the options I had been given. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. You can choose to either make a video from scratch with a text prompt or use an existing image that you want to edit. You can also add an image of someone and ask for them to be dropped into a scene. This option comes with an incredibly long list of warnings about use of that image and follows the same concerns that come with deepfakes on any platform. All of this technology can be found in competitors like Runway, Kling and Higgsfield. One of the major benefits of Haliuo is how good the free version of its software is. The load times are slightly slower, and you are still limited in credits, but that limit is pretty high. You will be able to get 20 to 30 videos generated before you near the end of your credit limit and there are ways to get more without having to sign up for a paid plan. However, on the free plan, your images and videos will have watermarks on them - something to keep in mind if you plan to use these videos commercially. Once you've made an account on Hailuai, you'll land on the homescreen. You should have roughly 1,000 credits at this point. Videos cost around 30 credits and images just 1. On the left hand side there are four ways to interact with the AI generation. For this particular activity, we want the 'create video' section. Here, you can choose to turn images into video, text to video or input your subject reference (an image of a person to edit). Most importantly here, you want to change your model at the bottom to T2V-01-Director to add the camera angles change. Then, by clicking the small camera in the bottom right corner, you'll be able to choose the camera angle style for your video. Once that's all selected, and you've put your prompt in, click the generate button in the bottom right. It will take a few minutes to generate but compared to other free video generators is actually quite fast. This isn't the best AI video generator on the market, but considering how good its free plan is (and then how affordable the paid plans are) its a great choice for those not wanting to fork out large amounts of money to generate a few videos. Hailuo offers all of the same features you'd see in leading models and, quite frankly, in some ways more. You can even ask Deepseek for assistance on your prompt directly from the Hailouai app. With such stiff competition in this market, Hailoai is keeping up surprisingly well with the likes of OpenAI and Gemini, even offering the ability to add sound (at the expense of more credits of course).

Climber from Leigh becomes youngest Brit to complete three Everest peaks

A CLIMBER has become the youngest Brit and one of just four people to complete the rare 'Everest triple crown' –conquering three Himalayan peaks in a single expedition. Jay Whiting, from Leigh, completed the challenge last month as he successfully climbed neighbouring mountains Everest, Nuptse and Lhotse in quick succession. The 'triple crown' involves climbing the three Himalayan peaks in one climb — a challenge that demands extreme endurance, skill, and determination. Conquered - Jay Whiting, 33, at the summit of Mount Everest. (Image: Jay Whiting) Jay, 33, said: 'This has been a dream of mine for years. 'To complete all three peaks in a single season has been both the hardest and most rewarding thing I've ever done. 'It was a super windy, hard season, so I had to be in good physical and mental shape –But I managed to pull it off.' Jay climbed Nuptse on May 12, Everest on May 20 and Lhotse on May 23, all in a single expedition alongside his sherpa Dawa Tenji, whom he planned the trip with in advance. Adventure - Jay Whiting, 33, at the peak on Lhotse in the Himalayas. (Image: Jay Whiting) He was determined to succeed in the challenge after he attempted to climb Nuptse in 2022, but failed to reach the summit after running out of equipment. Completing the triple crown made him one of only four people in the world to achieve the feat, and the youngest Brit to do so. Jay has been climbing for ten years, conquering mountains such as Mont Blanc, Matterhorn and Ama Dablam, progressing his climbs in difficulty over the years. He added: 'I like the commitment, the personal challenge, setting a goal and working towards it – famous people in the climbing world have tried this challenge and failed.' For this challenge, he had to train for over two years to prepare for the expedition, while working full-time and raising a one-year-old child with his wife. 'The only way to grow as an individual to to explore outside of your comfort zone,' he said. 'It grinds you down and strips you back – Its just you and the mountain.' Jay fundraised for the climb by collecting donations for LandAid, a charity that combats youth homelessness in the UK and a cause Whiting is passionate about. He now hopes his story will inspire others to take on their own challenges – whether in the mountains or closer to home. Visit to donate to LandAid.

'90s Alt-Rocker Felled by Medical Emergency Still Needs Your Help Amid Recovery

'90s Alt-Rocker Felled by Medical Emergency Still Needs Your Help Amid Recovery originally appeared on Parade. , the singer-guitarist known for such 1990s alternative rock hits as 'Girlfriend' and 'Sick of Myself,' suffered a debilitating stroke in October 2024 while on tour with Hanson in Canada. In wake of that stroke, Sweet's management team created a GoFundMe account for the musician to help pay for the tremendous costs for his medical care, rehab and to renovate his home so it is physically accessible to the musician, who is now wheelchair bound. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 To make matters worse, Sweet's wife, who was trained to take over as his primary caretaker once he moved back into their Omaha, Neb. home, suffered a fall and severely broke her leg, requiring her to have immediate surgery and round-the-clock nursing care along with Matthew. Sweet's manager Russell Carter, took to Facebook on Friday, June 6 to share the news and ask for more support from his fans, although more than $600,000 has been raised to date. 'To begin, Matthew wants all of you to know that he would not be where he is today without your profoundly generous support. A day does not pass without him acknowledging how lucky he is to have caring family, friends, music business associates and fans,' he wrote. Carter added some details about Sweet's current physical condition. 'Matthew is wheelchair bound due to a lack of coordination in his legs (caused by stroke induced ataxia) and he does not have sufficient coordination in his hands to even try to play instruments. He cannot at this time use a walker. He also has coordination issues with his eyes which impairs his sight. While his speaking voice is only slightly impaired, he cannot sing. Doctors still cannot give Matthew a prognosis for the future which means he must soldier on daily with determination and engage in therapy hoping for the best but without knowing what the eventual outcome will be. This is a very hard predicament to endure,' he explained. Carter added that most of the money raised through the initial GoFundMe campaign has been spent and Sweet, 60, still has some remaining hospital bills that need to be paid, so he's asking for fans to donate again, if they can. 'If you can donate again to his fund, he can continue to work hard on his rehab at home and at out patient facilities and he can continue to pay his bills until one day he can hopefully return to being a self sustaining working musician,' he added. 'In the meantime , donations will go strictly to covering his basic recurring monthly expenses. Any continued support is very much appreciated.''90s Alt-Rocker Felled by Medical Emergency Still Needs Your Help Amid Recovery first appeared on Parade on Jun 6, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 6, 2025, where it first appeared.
