Good Samaritan helps baby after Asheboro crash: ‘Just wanted to make sure that they were OK'

ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Asheboro Police say suspects involved in a police chase crashed into a vehicle that had a newborn baby inside. Quennie Rodriguez said there was a crash on Monday morning off North Cox Street. Without thinking twice, she ran outside of her job at the Jason G. Goins Law Office to investigate. 'I heard screaming. I came running down, and something took over and just wanted to make sure they were OK,' Rodriguez said. Asheboro police say the crash was the result of two suspects on a crime spree who had made stops at several different businesses in different cities. Officers responded to a larceny at the CVS on Dixie Drive. Once on the scene, the suspects were seen leaving, and a chase started. Police say the suspects crashed a U-Haul van into another vehicle on North Cox Street that had two women and a newborn baby inside. Rodriguez said she helped translate for the victims, who didn't speak English, while another good Samaritan helped take care of the baby. 'I was just making sure that she was OK … A baby isn't going to tell you if they're injured or not … The other lady who was on scene, who happened to be a registered nurse, says that she was OK and there were no injuries,' Rodriguez said. Thankfully, the baby is OK, and it was because of one thing. 'The paramedics said that if it wasn't for her being properly fastened how she was in the car seat, she could've been gravely injured or worse because of the van that hit them,' Rodriguez said. As for the suspects, Asheboro police arrested 37-year-old Matthew Riverbark for several charges, including felony hit and run, felony flee to elude and felony possession of methamphetamine. Officers also arrested 32-year-old Jenna Andrews. She also faces several charges, including felony larceny, identity theft and organized retail theft. Asheboro police say they're grateful to several citizens, including Rodriguez, who worked together with first responders to help the victims of the crash. 'I just wanted to make sure that they were OK. You would just want somebody to help you, especially in their time of need. We're a small town,' Rodriguez said. Asheboro police say both Andrews and Riverbark are in the Randolph County Jail with no bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
