5 Buffalo police officers placed on leave amid Granville investigation
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Five Buffalo police officers have been placed on administrative leave in connection to an alleged incident involving the Erie County Sheriff Department's chief of the Narcotics and Intelligence Unit, Buffalo Police Commissioner Alphonso Wright said.
Chief Daniel 'DJ' Granville has been accused of hitting six vehicles and damaging seven vehicles in total during an April 2024 incident. In addition to the five officers being placed on administrative leave, Granville has been issued three tickets for leaving the scene of a property damage accident without reporting.
The crashes occurred on two streets on Buffalo's West Side around midnight on April 11, according to documentation obtained by News 4. It is alleged that Granville was on duty at the time of the crashes.
Last month, Erie County Court Judge Sheila DiTullio appointed Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman as the special prosecutor for the case because a close family relative of Granville works at the Erie County District Attorney's Office.
'At this point in the investigation, and in consultation with the special prosecutor assigned to the case, Buffalo Police are announcing that DJ Granville was issued three (3) tickets for NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law 600 (1)(a) — leaving the scene of a property damage accident without reporting,' Buffalo Police said in a statement. 'As part of the investigation, Buffalo Police Commissioner Alphonso Wright has placed five officers on non-disciplinary administrative leave in connection with the ongoing review of the Granville incident. This action does not imply guilt or wrongdoing by any of the involved officers. In order to protect the integrity of both investigations, the Buffalo Police Department will not be commenting any further until their conclusions.'

Man from Ghana charged after alleged blackmail of Buffalo victim
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man from Ghana faces an extortion charge after he allegedly used nude photographs of a victim in Buffalo to blackmail him, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Cross Abu Cole, 21, possessed nude photographs of the Buffalo male when he was a minor, according to a complaint made by the victim in October 2022. Cole then allegedly demanded $200 be sent to him otherwise he would send the photos to people the victim knew on Snapchat. The man also possessed a nude photo of the victim's friend, officials said. Numerous threats for money were made and nude photographs were sent out. An investigation traced the telephone number threats to Cole. He was taken into custody in Texas and was charged by criminal complaint with interstate communications with intent to extort. Cole faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Residents voice outrage after ICE raid in North Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A neighborhood in North Buffalo is voicing its outrage after it said armed ICE agents detained a number of roofers in broad daylight. A homeowner on Crescent Avenue in the Parkside neighborhood recently posted on social media saying that on May 12, armed ICE agents stopped by her home and removed four roofers while they were on their lunch break. The homeowner, who for privacy reasons will remain anonymous, claimed these were legally employed roofers with the proper paperwork and documentation. The post has since gained a lot of attention on social media. One resident took photos of the raid and the large police presence in her neighborhood. In an email to the Parkside Community Association, she wrote in part, 'Many of us neighbors were outside observing this, in shock.' Local leaders say they understand why people in the neighborhood are upset. Braden Pritchard is the president of the Parkside Community Association. He said for this to happen during the day, with schools nearby and in a quiet neighborhood, is alarming. 'We felt that was a totally inappropriate response to detain four unarmed roofers. To the best of our knowledge, there was no reason to suspect there was a threat,' he said. The PCA released a statement when this happened, saying in part, 'This kind of operation traumatizes our community, creates fear among law-abiding residents, and undermines trust in public institutions. Parkside is a strong, inclusive neighborhood, and we believe it is unacceptable for our streets to be treated like a battleground.' State Senator Sean Ryan told News 4 that neighbors have reached out to his office outraged and concerned. He said they described the scene last month as chaotic and confusing. 'There's a lot of questions about why would the FBI be involved in this. We don't know the details of the people who were detained, but generally the thought is the FBI should have a lot more important things going on in terms of enforcing major crimes in our community,' Ryan said.
