South Africa's MMA championship set to showcase top talent in Durban

South Africa's top mixed martial arts athletes will be competing for the title of SA champion at the national event taking place in Durban.
Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASA) is hosting the youth, junior and senior national championship from Friday June 13 to 15 at the DLI Hall in Greyville.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact fighting sport based on striking and grappling. It incorporates techniques from various combat sports from around the world, including boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu and karate.
Preggy Valuyathum, president of MMASA, said they were looking forward to hosting about 150 participants, aged between 10 and 35, from across the country.
Valuyathum said the three-day competition brings together youth and amateur fighters from across the country to compete, learn, and grow in a supportive, high-standard environment.
"The MMASA nationals is designed specifically to promote amateur athletes and youth development in MMA, providing a safe and structured platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills and passion.
'Our priority is to nurture and empower young and amateur fighters through quality competition and development opportunities,' said Valuyathum.
Winners in various weight and age categories at the MMASA nationals will earn the opportunity to represent South Africa at upcoming international IMMAF events, including IMMAF Youth World Championships in the UAE in July and the IMMAF Senior World Championships in Georgia in September.

"This provides a valuable platform for South African athletes to compete on the global stage and gain international exposure," he said.
He said martial arts is one of the fastest-growing sport in the world. It is a very safe and controlled sport.
"MMA is perceived as a brutal sport, but its not the case. It is technical, but has a lot of safety measures," said Valuyathum.
He said MMA was good for self-defence and discipline.Valuyathum is encouraging locals to attend and support the athletes at the event.
Tickets are available at the door at R100 per person.

At Stellenbosch FC, he is recognised for his ability to inspire teammates and maintain a positive attitude. He is a dependable set-piece taker and provides excellent ball distribution, making him an asset on the pitch. In the 2024/25 Premiership season, Basadien made a significant impact with his goal contributions, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 46 matches. In his debut against Tanzania, Basadien established himself as a reliable option in the left-back position. He demonstrated commendable composure, and his ability to push forward will be vital for South Africa as they aim to score when chasing matches, especially when compared with the inconsistent performances of Bafana Bafana incumbent Aubrey Modiba. 3 Luke le Roux The 25-year-old Sweden-based midfielder Le Roux has had health setbacks that have denied him regular duty for the national team. Such is the depth that he has at his disposal, the 40-year-old is adamant that he'll have a nice selection headache as well. Mweene was one of the goalkeepers – alongside Denis Onyango and Wayne Sandilands – who were part of the Sundowns team at the 2016 Club World Cup in Japan. He built on the experience that he garnered from that event as he played a key role in the Brazilians' dominance of South African football. The Afcon-winning goalkeeper with Zambia hung up his gloves two seasons ago, trading standing between the sticks to being a deputy goalkeeper coach at Sundowns. The Brazilians' goalkeeping department was so good that they missed out on the CAF Champions League crown by a whisker, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids FC in the final. But with that disappointment now behind them, Sundowns have put all their focus on the World Cup, in which they'll face Ulsan HD, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense in Group F. The Brazilians first game will be against South Koreans Ulsan next Wednesday, and Mweene has revealed who'll be his No 1 at the event. 'It's easy for me – it's not difficult. I think Ronwen and Denis have been doing well. We have Reyaad (Pieterse) as well,' Mweene said of his goalkeeping selection. 'We have got a balance of experience and youth, in this case, Reyaad, when it comes to playing on the international stage. For me, it's about continuity. 'Everyone knows that it'll be Ronwen (who'll be the No 1 and start most of the games) unless otherwise (due to injury).'
