South Africa's top mixed martial arts athletes will be competing for the title of SA champion at the national event taking place in Durban.
Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASA) is hosting the youth, junior and senior national championship from Friday June 13 to 15 at the DLI Hall in Greyville.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact fighting sport based on striking and grappling. It incorporates techniques from various combat sports from around the world, including boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu and karate.
Preggy Valuyathum, president of MMASA, said they were looking forward to hosting about 150 participants, aged between 10 and 35, from across the country.
Valuyathum said the three-day competition brings together youth and amateur fighters from across the country to compete, learn, and grow in a supportive, high-standard environment.
"The MMASA nationals is designed specifically to promote amateur athletes and youth development in MMA, providing a safe and structured platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills and passion.
'Our priority is to nurture and empower young and amateur fighters through quality competition and development opportunities,' said Valuyathum.
Winners in various weight and age categories at the MMASA nationals will earn the opportunity to represent South Africa at upcoming international IMMAF events, including IMMAF Youth World Championships in the UAE in July and the IMMAF Senior World Championships in Georgia in September.

New talents emerge for Bafana Bafana ahead of Fifa World Cup qualifiers

Basadien's possible future move Stellenbosch FC defender and stand-in Bafana Bafana captain Fawaaz Basadien is in demand after an impressive season for his club. As the countdown to the World Cup qualifiers in September begins, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has taken proactive steps to refine the national squad by playing friendlies. Recently, the national team managed a goalless draw against Tanzania before securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Mozambique. The line-up featured a mix of experimental talent as several key players from Mamelodi Sundowns and overseas-based players were absent; the performances from emerging stars have ignited optimism for the team's future. Among the stand-out performers in these matches were the Orlando Pirates duo of Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota, who both demonstrated their potential for most of the season in the domestic arena. Additionally, three other players made a compelling case for their inclusion in future Bafana Bafana squads: Mbekeza Mbokazi, Fawaaz Basadien and Luke le Roux. 1 Mbekezeli Mbokazi At just 19 years old, Mbokazi has created a buzz in South African football, establishing himself as a candidate for the left centre-back position that Broos has pinpointed as needing urgent attention. He rose through the ranks at Pirates with remarkable speed and now made his national debut against Mozambique. He had an impressive understanding of the game alongside his club teammate Nkosinathi Sibisi in the rearguard. From the moment he stepped onto the pitch in international colours, it was evident that Mbokazi's talent transcended his age. He has solid defensive skills, is comfortable on the ball and poses a threat during set plays. Mbokazi impressed with his tenacity and aerial prowess. Not the tallest of defenders, his ability to secure aerial duels often contrasts with expectations, proving that skill and determination can conquer physical limitations on the pitch. 2 Fawaaz Basadien Basadien, who captained the team against Tanzania, exhibited strong leadership, tactical skills, and unwavering commitment to his team. At Stellenbosch FC, he is recognised for his ability to inspire teammates and maintain a positive attitude. He is a dependable set-piece taker and provides excellent ball distribution, making him an asset on the pitch. In the 2024/25 Premiership season, Basadien made a significant impact with his goal contributions, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 46 matches. In his debut against Tanzania, Basadien established himself as a reliable option in the left-back position. He demonstrated commendable composure, and his ability to push forward will be vital for South Africa as they aim to score when chasing matches, especially when compared with the inconsistent performances of Bafana Bafana incumbent Aubrey Modiba. 3 Luke le Roux The 25-year-old Sweden-based midfielder Le Roux has had health setbacks that have denied him regular duty for the national team. His recent performances highlight his technical prowess, showcasing a mastery of possession that is invaluable as South Africa gears up for crucial World Cup qualifiers. His physical strength, stamina, and work ethic that does not wane have made him an indispensable asset to both his club and the national squad. Regarded as a 'box-to-box midfielder', Le Roux's ability to transition between defensive responsibilities and offensive thrusts plays a significant role in shaping the team's dynamics. His impressive aerial ability allows him to excel in duels, contributing significantly to both defence and attack. Coupled with his tactical intelligence, Le Roux demonstrates an understanding of the game, making astute decisions on the pitch that often tilt the balance in tight encounters.

Mweene has the best goalkeepers at his disposal for Mamelodi Sundowns in Fifa Club World Cup

Ronwen Williams is sure to be the starting goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Kennedy Mweene will complete a full circle in his career when he returns to the Fifa Club World Cup in the United States as Mamelodi Sundowns' goalkeeper coach. Such is the depth that he has at his disposal, the 40-year-old is adamant that he'll have a nice selection headache as well. Mweene was one of the goalkeepers – alongside Denis Onyango and Wayne Sandilands – who were part of the Sundowns team at the 2016 Club World Cup in Japan. He built on the experience that he garnered from that event as he played a key role in the Brazilians' dominance of South African football. The Afcon-winning goalkeeper with Zambia hung up his gloves two seasons ago, trading standing between the sticks to being a deputy goalkeeper coach at Sundowns. But after his superior Wendell Robinson was sacked alongside head coach Manqoba Mngqithi late last year, he ascended to the position of head goalkeeper coach. Video Player is loading. The Brazilians' goalkeeping department was so good that they missed out on the CAF Champions League crown by a whisker, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids FC in the final. But with that disappointment now behind them, Sundowns have put all their focus on the World Cup, in which they'll face Ulsan HD, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense in Group F. The Brazilians first game will be against South Koreans Ulsan next Wednesday, and Mweene has revealed who'll be his No 1 at the event. 'It's easy for me – it's not difficult. I think Ronwen and Denis have been doing well. We have Reyaad (Pieterse) as well,' Mweene said of his goalkeeping selection. 'We have got a balance of experience and youth, in this case, Reyaad, when it comes to playing on the international stage. For me, it's about continuity. 'Everyone knows that it'll be Ronwen (who'll be the No 1 and start most of the games) unless otherwise (due to injury).' Sure, Williams is Sundowns' undisputed No 1, but Onyango's experience will come in handy in America, given his overall experience and participation at their last World Cup. Mweene, who's the same age as Onyango (40), has lifted the lid on what it has been like to coach the former Ugandan No 1 in the last two seasons. 'I think the most important thing as a goalkeeper coach is to know how to train him. He's 40-plus,' Mweene said. 'It's not easy. You must know how to train him. 'There are exercises that he doesn't complete, because we look at his body and what he needs. He always pushes himself.' As a result, Africa have four teams – Sundowns are joined by Al Ahly, Esperance and Wydad Casablanca. The quartet's qualification has all but given the continent a slim chance of earning a podium finish, something that pleases Mweene. 'I think it's good for Africa because last time, it was maybe two teams or one. But this time there are about four, and that gives us a chance as Africa,' Mweene said.

According to SABC Sports' Mazola Molefe, Orlando Pirates will complete the deal sooner rather than later. To catch the Buccaneers' attention, the 24-year-old Moremi delivered four goals and seven assists in 24 matches. 'SABC Sport has established that Orlando Pirates are pushing to sign winger Tshepang Moremi from AmaZulu, with discussions believed to be advanced and a deal now likely,' the report said. 'It's understood these talks are progressing with ease given the history between the two sides with previous deals during the transfer window as well as the mutual respect that exists among the two clubs,' Molefe added. Moremi started his professional football in the lower leagues at Bizana Pondo on loan from the AmaZulu reserve team. Another season on loan at JDR Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship polished him to become a fully established Betway Premiership player for AmaZulu since the 2023/24 season.
