Royal Navy ‘keeping an eye' on Russian ships passing through English Channel

Independent5 hours ago

The Royal Navy has shadowed Russian warships as they transited through the English Channel, marking the latest in a series of such close encounters in strategic waters.
Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS Duncan and patrol ship HMS Mersey were deployed to monitor the movements of the Russian corvette RFN Boikiy.
The Russian vessel was returning from a deployment in the Gulf of Guinea when HMS Duncan intercepted it near the island of Ushant, off the French coast, on June 20.
Patrol ship HMS Mersey then took over surveillance duties as the Boikiy proceeded past the Isle of Wight.
This incident follows a pattern of similar deployments by UK warships to track Russian vessels.
Recently, HMS Trent, a patrol ship, along with Wildcat helicopters from 815 Naval Air Squadron, tracked the Russian frigate RFN Admiral Grigorovich as part of joint Nato operations.
That vessel sailed past Gibraltar, through the English Channel, and into the North Sea, the Royal Navy confirmed.
Luke Pollard, Minister for the Armed Forces, said: 'Russian warships are increasingly sailing through the English Channel, and every time they do, a Royal Navy vessel will be keeping an eye on them.
'I have every confidence, as should the British public, that our Royal Navy will continue to defend our waters and keep our undersea cables safe.'
Commander Daniel Lee, Commanding Officer of HMS Duncan, said: 'Escorting foreign warships through waters near the UK is a vital part of our mission to protect our nation and uphold international maritime law.
'It's a clear demonstration of our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our seas, which are so important to the lives and livelihoods of the British people.'

CIA says Trump strikes will set back Iran's nuke programme by YEARS as White House calls for leaker to be JAILED

Scroll down for the latest updates... BUNKER BUSTED CIA says Trump strikes will set back Iran's nuke programme by YEARS as White House calls for leaker to be JAILED THE CIA says Donald Trump's weekend blitz on Iran has left key nuclear sites 'destroyed' – in a devastating blow that will take 'years' to recover from. In a bombshell statement, the Agency's director John Ratcliffe confirmed 'several key Iranian nuclear facilities' were wiped out and must be completely rebuilt. 4 CIA Director John Ratcliffe pictured on March 25 Credit: Reuters 4 Craters on a ridge at the Fordow plant after US strikes Credit: EPA 4 US President Donald Trump during a press conference after the NATO summit at the World Forum The Hague Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 4 CIA chief Ratcliffe released this statement on his profile on X Credit: X 'The CIA can confirm that a body of credible intelligence indicates Iran's Nuclear Program has been severely damaged by the recent, targeted strikes,' Ratcliffe said. 'This includes new intelligence from a historically reliable and accurate source/method that several key Iranian nuclear facilities were destroyed and would have to be rebuilt over the course of years.' The chief added the CIA would 'provide updates to the American public' given the 'national importance' of the operation. It comes after White House called for the arrest of whoever leaked a classified intelligence report on Iran's nuclear sites — as Donald Trump demanded CNN's Natasha Bertrand be fired 'like a dog.' Speaking at a NATO summit press conference in The Hague, the president raged at 'fake news' outlets over reports suggesting US airstrikes failed to cripple Iran's nuke programme. Trump insisted Tehran's labs were now 'totally inoperable,' citing intelligence from both Israel and Iran confirming the scale of the devastation. The uproar followed reports from CNN, MSNBC, and The New York Times citing a leaked Defense Intelligence Agency memo that raised doubts over the extent of the damage — particularly at the Fordow nuclear site. The report was based on just 24 hours of data. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the person responsible for leaking the classified Iran intelligence report should face jail time. 'They should go to jail,' she told Fox News' Ryan Schmelz when asked about potential punishment for the leaker. Leavitt said the DIA memo had been 'discredited' by U.S. and Israeli officials — and even by Iran itself. 'CNN ran with a story they knew wasn't fully vetted,' Leavitt told Fox News, calling it a leak from 'someone with an agenda' and noting it came from 'the same reporter who once pushed the false Hunter Biden laptop narrative.' She confirmed the FBI is investigating the leak and stressed that those responsible 'should be held accountable.' Defending the strikes, Leavitt said: 'This operation achieved what decades of diplomacy and sanctions could not.' Trump went on to slam the media outlets, saying: 'We had a tremendous success. 'And this is the New York Times. I call it the failing New York Times. It's going to hell. And CNN, which is, you know, very few people are watching, and you would think they'd do the opposite. 'So it's just fake news by CNN, which has got no ratings. It's a failed network,' he added. The president didn't hold back, declaring: 'CNN is scum, the New York Times is scum, MSNBC is scum. They're bad people, they're sick. And what they've done is they want to turn this incredible victory into something less.' Trump then unleashed on Bertrand in a furious Truth Social post: 'Natasha Bertrand should be FIRED from CNN! I watched her for three days doing Fake News… 'She should be IMMEDIATELY reprimanded, and then thrown out 'like a dog'... 'She lied on the Laptop from Hell Story, and now she lied on the Nuclear Sites Story… She should not be allowed to work at Fake News CNN... FIRE NATASHA!' UK joins WTO trade arbitration alternative

GENEVA, June 25 (Reuters) - The United Kingdom has become the latest country to join an alternative mechanism for resolving disputes to the World Trade Organization, it said in a statement on Wednesday. The World Trade Organization's top appeals body has been inactive since 2019, after President Donald Trump, during his first term, blocked new appointments to the top appeal's court. That left the WTO's key dispute settlement system only partially functional, as the Appellate Body no longer had enough members to hear cases. Washington had accused the WTO Appellate Body of judicial overreach in trade disputes. The U.K. announced the decision on Wednesday as part of its new trade strategy, which it said will protect and boost British business amid a turbulent economic situation, resurgent protectionism and unfair trading practices. "The UK will join the Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA)...demonstrating our commitment to an effective rules-based international trading system," the Department of Business and Trade said in a statement. Sixteen WTO members established the separate appeals mechanism for trade disputes in March 2020 as an alternative temporary arbitration arrangement for resolving WTO disputes that are appealed by a member while the WTO Appellate Body is not operational. The MPIA currently has 56 members, according to the MPIA website, opens new tab, including the European Union, Canada and Brazil. The decision comes one week after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Trump signed an agreement formally lowering some tariffs on imports into the U.S. from Britain as the countries continue working toward a formal trade deal. Britain had avoided tariffs of up to 50% on steel and aluminium that the U.S. imposed on other countries earlier this month, but it could have faced elevated tariffs starting July 9 unless a deal to implement the tariff reduction was reached.

Dark forces are exploiting our soft-touch borders – it's time to take back control before it's too late

Putin boat in NATO leaders met yesterday to discuss global threats, including from Russia and China. Yet there's one massive security disaster that the British Government has been sleep-walking into. 1 Suspected terrorists, sex offenders and drug gang leaders have all arrived here illegally on small boats. And now security chiefs fear hostile states are taking advantage of Britain's inability to protect its own borders to sow division. The Left likes to dismiss the seriousness of illegal migrant crossings. Yet there is now mounting evidence that dark forces abroad want to weaponise the epic failure of our soft touch system to unpick the fabric of our society. Some illegal migrants are now effectively state-sponsored by rogue regimes like Russia and Iran, whose agents have provided support and false papers. The Home Office insists it is aware of the problem. Project beer ON the day he entered Number 10, Sir Keir Starmer promised to 'tread more lightly' on the lives of voters. How does he square that with the idea of draconian restrictions on booze ads? You'd think Labour's fun police would have learned their lesson after the ban on smoking in pub gardens went up in a flame of public outrage. Sun probe uncovers asylum seekers in hotels linked to string of rape cases Instead, the constant desire to interfere suggests we will never be free of the Nanny-knows-best attitude which infects our public health bodies. Labour now finds itself in the bizarre position of wanting to give the vote to 16-year-olds — yet barring anyone over 18 from watching an advert for lager online, or before 9pm on TV. What on earth will they consider next? A ban on eating sausages? A crackdown on cake? Life in Britain should be about freedom and choice. This latest crazy plan is enough to drive anyone to drink. Steely resolve IT'S a current madness that in the dash to Net Zero, Britain bans new drilling for fossil fuels while China burns billions of tons of coal to make cheap steel for wind turbines — which it then sells to us. But welcome changes now mean the Chinese can be cut out of Government contracts in critical areas of national security. That's not only a major boost for British steel and other UK firms. It's also a vital step towards keeping one of our biggest security threats at arm's length.
