Suspected thief tied to police vehicle in Jammu, Mirwaiz asks: ‘Is this how Kashmiris will be treated in their own land?'
A day after the Jammu and Kashmir Police allegedly paraded a 24-year-old youth shirtless on the bonnet of a police vehicle for alleged theft in Jammu, Hurriyat chairman and Valley's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq demanded to know if this is how Kashmiris will be treated in their own land.
'Is this how Kashmiris will be treated in their own land? Stripped of human dignity! Paraded and shamed,' Mirwaiz said on X. 'Actually, it's a shame on the system and mindset that actively participates to humiliate people on the basis of religion and region'.
On Tuesday, the police arrested a 24-year-old man from the Kashmir Valley from the premises of a government hospital in Jammu for an alleged theft. The youth was garlanded with slippers and allegedly paraded shirtless on the bonnet of a police vehicle while his hands were tied behind his back.
After the video of the parade went viral on social media and drew criticism against police for acting like a mob, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Joginder Singh ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident.

In his post, Mirwaiz drew parallels between the incident and one from 2017 when an army major tied a civilian to an army jeep and paraded him through different villages of central Kashmir's Budgam district.
'And this is not the first time. One Major Gogoi is notorious for similar brutality,' Mirwaiz said. 'Ruling authority and Elected representatives must punish all those involved and bring the perpetrators to book'.

Punjab Police put in place robust multi-agency security plan for Shri Amarnath Yatra-2025
Chandigarh, June 25 (UNI) To ensure the safe and smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnath Yatra-2025, Punjab Police have implemented a comprehensive, multi-layered, and inter-agency security and coordination plan. This includes advanced surveillance, strategic deployment of forces, and round-the-clock coordination for the safety of pilgrims, said Special Director General of Police (Special DGP) Law and Order Arpit Shukla today. The sacred Shri Amarnath Yatra 2025 is scheduled to commence on July 3, 2025, and will continue till August 9, 2025. This annual pilgrimage draws lakhs of devotees from across India, many of whom travel through Punjab, particularly Pathankot district, on their way to the holy cave shrine in Jammu & Kashmir. Special DGP Arpit Shukla chaired a high-level security and coordination meeting involving the Police, Army, Civil Administration, and other security agencies to review and strengthen the arrangements for the pilgrimage. The meeting, held in Pathankot, focused on strategic preparations for the Yatra, covering aspects such as police deployment, security measures, traffic regulation, and disaster management. Special DGP Shukla emphasised the need for heightened vigilance, given Pathankot's strategic location, sharing 26.385 km of the international border with Pakistan and housing critical defence installations. He said the level of security has been further escalated, with Commandant-rank officers appointed in charge of all roads leading to Jammu & Kashmir. He informed that the Yatra route has been divided into well-defined security sectors, each under the supervision of a Commandant-rank officer, to ensure 24x7 ground-level oversight and rapid response in case of any exigency. A 24x7 Command and Control Centre has been established at Nakka Madhopur, supervised by a Gazetted Officer, to monitor vehicle and pilgrim movements using advanced surveillance systems. Daily anti-sabotage and security checks are being conducted at sensitive locations, including railway stations, bus stands, langar (community kitchen) sites, religious places, and across the entire Yatra route to detect and deter potential threats. These measures are being implemented under the direct supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pathankot, Daljinder Singh Dhillon. The Special DGP directed concerned officers to ensure seamless coordination among all stakeholders, including the Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Jammu & Kashmir Police, Himachal Pradesh Police, and other central agencies. He further highlighted that additional technical resources such as mobile surveillance units, high-resolution CCTV systems, drone-based aerial surveillance, GPS-enabled patrolling, and real-time reporting mechanisms are actively being employed to monitor suspicious activities. Meanwhile, police have sensitised and trained owners and staff of petrol pumps, dhabas, hotels, guest houses, and other roadside establishments along the route to report any unusual activity, suspicious objects, or unidentified persons to the nearest police station without delay. AP police bags award for verifying 6.25 lakh passport applications within 3 days
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has presented a 'Certification of Recognition' to the Andhra Pradesh Police for exemplary performance in passport application verification during the financial year 2024-25. Superintendent of Police (Intelligence) A. Ramadevi received the award from the Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, during the 13th Passport Seva Divas celebrations at the Passport Officers' Conference — 2025, held from June 23 to 25 at New Delhi. Recognising the critical role of police verification in issuing passports, the MEA adjudged the Andhra Pradesh Police as one of the best performing agencies across the country for completing 6.25 lakh police verification reports within a record three-day window, said Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta. In addition, Andhra Pradesh State has also secured awards in two more categories. The Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, Guntur, won the Institutional Performance Award (Postal) and the Regional Passport Officer (RPO), Vijayawada, won the Individual Recognition Award, said the DGP in a release on Wednesday. He complimented the police for winning the award.
