Thug Life: Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR faced loss of Rs 30 crore after Karnataka theater ban? Producers weigh in

Pink Villa4 hours ago

Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR in the lead roles, hit the big screens on June 5, 2025. Ahead of its release, the Mani Ratnam directorial faced a ban in Karnataka over the veteran actor's comments against Kannada.
Now, in a recent report, it seems that the film faced a loss of Rs 30 crore after failing to release in the Kannada-speaking region. In an update shared by the production house, Raaj Kamal Films International confirmed the same.
For those unaware, Kamal Haasan made the headlines after he commented against the Kannada language. In a pre-release event, the actor remarked how Kannada was born out of Tamil, which led to a huge uproar among people.
As the pro-Kannada activists protested against Haasan and asked him to apologize, the actor declined. This further led the Karnataka Film Board to impose a ban on the movie, limiting its release.
However, the Supreme Court of India has criticised the Karnataka government and the Karnataka Film Chamber for their handling of the controversy. The apex court has allowed the film's release in Karnataka, questioning the state government and the Kannada Film Body.
On a side note, the Supreme Court further raised concerns on the trend of threatening violence when sentiments are hurt.
Coming to Thug Life, the Kamal Haasan and STR starrer is a gangster action drama, directed by Mani Ratnam, which is co-penned by Haasan. The film narrates the tale of a gangster, Rangaraaya Sakthivel, who once adopted a young boy, Amaran, after a shootout in Delhi.
Years later, the foster father and son develop a strong bond, with Amaran being a formidable member of the mafia. However, a stark turn of events leads to an animosity between them, which causes them to lock horns.
How the father and son end their feud and whether they would finally reunite forms the crux of the film. Apart from the lead actors, the film features Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, and more in key roles.
The gangster actioner was received with mixed-to-negative reviews from critics but is considered to be one of the highest-grossing films in Tamil cinema for 2025.

New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Korean Cultural Centre India presents the All India K-Pop Contest 2025, which began on May 14 and will culminate with the Grand Finale on July 19. With this expansion, there will be a total of three categories this year: Dance, Vocal and Rap, as per the press release. The competition is structured in three stages: Online, Regional and Grand Finale. The online round was held between May 14 and June 7, and it received a total of 1,278 team registrations from across the country, underlining the nationwide appeal of K-pop. The Regional Round will kick off in Chennai on June 22 and will thereafter travel to Bengaluru, Kolkata, Itanagar, Bhopal, New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kohima and Hyderabad, bringing the excitement of K-Pop to cities nationwide. These rounds will be organised independently by each local fan community, with support and oversight from the Korean Cultural Centre India. The selected winners of the three categories from the 10 cities will compete in the Grand Finale that will be held on July 19 in New Delhi, which will again unfold many surprises. The final event will also include a fan meeting event and special performances by K-pop idol groups invited from Korea. It is touching to see young people in India empathising and communicating with each other through the unified culture of Korean music and K-pop, despite the large size of the country and the diverse languages and cultures in each region. I hope that Indian friends will participate and continue to create a place for empathy and communication through K-pop culture in India.' Oinam Surchandra, a candidate who will participate in the newly introduced rap category, said, 'I feel incredibly grateful to the Korean Cultural Centre India for giving upcoming rappers like us a platform to showcase our love for K-pop and rap. In a country where K-pop rap is still growing, this opportunity means the world. I genuinely hope that the rap category continues in future contests, as there are so many aspiring artists who dream of expressing themselves this way.' 'Sitaare Zameen Par' box office opening day analysis: The Aamir Khan starrer expected to open at Rs 7-8 crore; will it affect 'Housefull 5'? Trade experts discuss

Aamir Khan 's 'Sitaare Zameen Par' has now released in theatres and while the trailer got a decent response, it's the positive word of mouth that shall play a huge role in the film's box office fate. While one may usually expect a big Aamir Khan starrer to open with big numbers, this one is slightly different. It's made for a different audience and will grow eventually if the public reviews are good. As per the advance booking report of the film till Thursday night, the movie had sold about 81931 tickets and collected Rs 2.5 crore in the advance bookings, according to Sacnilk. Talking about the expectations from the film on day 1, trade expert Taran Adarsh told ETimes, "I think the start is not going to be like the typical Aamir Khan starrer that we used to see in the past. I think the film will start slow, but will depend on the word of mouth. The start may be in single digits and if the word of mouth is very good, then I think it should cross the double digits on day one, but as of now, it's looking like a single digit opening." He added, "This is a word of mouth film. This is not a Dhoom or 'Ghajini' that will open with a bang. Now, as I said, it all depends on the public reports. I think Rs 7.5 to 8 crore is what we are looking at." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo Film trade expert Girish Wankhede said, "'Sitaara Zameen Par' doesn't look like a massive film. It looks typical, classy, elite film for the high-end, multiplex cutout. So, the way regular Aamir Khan films like PK, Dangal, performs, this one won't do that way. Secondly, it is not a huge release. Instead of marketing, they are more invested in showcasing the characters with various has not touched the masses. Third thing is, there are no great songs. So, my expectation of the very first day is around 7 to 8 crores, which is very less compared to all the Aamir Khan releases. If the word of mouth is stronger, then it can just go out of the roof on Friday and Sunday." Talking about the weekend numbers expected, in case the word of mouth is good, Wankhede adds, "At this moment, I can say that this film would not do more than 30-35 crores in the weekend, which is not a great number." Lesser screens for ' Housefull 5 ' At the moment, 'Housefull 5' starring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh , Abhishek Bachchan among others is dominating at the box office. It collected Rs 2.75 crore on Thursday which was day 14. The second week collection of the movie is now Rs 40 crore. The total collection of the movie so far is Rs 168 crore. But with the release of 'Sitaare Zameen Par', the number of screens for 'Housefull 5' will reduce. Taran Adarsh says, "Yes, that is going to be less. But in single screens, I think this film Housefull 5 will still be there. But major shows in multiplexes will be 'Sitaare Zameen Par'." However, Wankhede feels that since the genres of both are different, it won't get affected. "Moreover, 'Housefull 5' is already beginning to steam out," he said. If 'Sitaare Zameen Par' gets positive word of mouth, the film will have the entire week to find a place for itself at the box office. On June 27, Kajol starrer mythological thriller 'Maa' releases on screen which will give competition to 'Sitaare Zameen Par'.
