Virginia International Tattoo will bring more than 100,000 to the Scope and bring $20 million to the economy

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the Virginia International Tattoo, which last year had an economic impact of more than $20 million and is expected to have a similar impact this year.

Just days away, the Virginia International Tattoo, which began in 1997 with just a single show at Scope Arena, is the unofficial start to our season of festivals.
Now, more than 20,000 students from the region see the largest Tattoo in North America, and the Virginia Arts Festival expects more than 110,000 people to attend, making it the largest Tattoo in North America.

'The economic impact last year was estimated to be over $20 million just from that one week,' said Scott Jackson, the director and producer of the Virginia International Tattoo.
Jackson said the show is for all ages and brings in people from all over.
'We also have multiple NATO countries involved,' Jackson said. 'And not only is the cast international, so is the audience. In fact, last year, I think overall at the Arts Festival, we had people come from 49 states and I think 11 international points of origin.'
Bryan K. Stephens, CEO and president of the Hampton Roads Chamber, said it has a collective impact, and the entire region sees benefits.

'That is huge for the hotels and restaurants and our tourism industry here in Hampton Roads,' Stephens said. 'So it's just not Norfolk, it's the entire Hampton Roads region.'
One of those places that is bracing for the increase in customers is Waterside. It has a meals voucher program and feeds all the cast. But when people come to see the show, they stop by for a quick bite.
'We will experience a pretty big jump in business, particularly for the lunches, because most of them tend to come out before the shows,' said Janet Aguilar, Waterside director of marketing.
Stephens said it is the beginning of the busy season the 757 will start seeing.
'Tourism is the third pillar of our economy, behind the Department of Defense spending and the Port of Virginia,' Stephens said. 'And so any way that we can exploit tourism here in Hampton Roads just really enhances our economy.'
The Virginia Arts Festival said more than 32% of ticket sales come from outside the area, resulting in thousands of visitors touring museums and attractions and going shopping.
'So we really create[d] a great package,' Jackson said. 'The Tattoo [is] the centerpiece, but there's all these other things to do.'

Mr. Trump has threatened to weaken American support for European security if allies do not shoulder more of the costs. 'There are a few countries that are not quite there yet,' Mr. Hegseth told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels. But, he said, 'we'll get them there.' 'When you consider the threats that we face, the urgency in the world, it's critical,' Mr. Hegseth added. The United States spends about 3.4 percent of its G.D.P. on defense but, as the alliance's largest power, that amounts to far more money than any other NATO member. While Mr. Trump has proposed spending $1.01 trillion on defense for the fiscal year that begins in October, such spending would have to rise an additional $200 billion for the United States to reach the 5 percent benchmark, according to a recent estimate by the Peterson Institute for International Economics. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told President Donald Trump he is in a "strong position" to stop Russia's war in Ukraine, to which the president suggested maybe the world needs to "let them fight for a little while." "America is again in a very strong position to do something on this war and ending this war," Merz said, while also referencing the U.S.'s role in ending World War II on the eve of the anniversary of D-Day, which marked the turn of events that led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. "So let's talk about what we can do jointly, and we are ready to do what we can." Merz called for more pressure to be placed on Russia in coordination with European allies. Trump responded by providing an analogy of two kids fighting, and suggested perhaps it was "too early" to break up the fight between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy – they hate each other, and they're fighting in a park, and you try and pull them apart, they don't want to be pulled," Trump said. "Sometimes you're better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart." Trump said he gave that analogy to Putin in his call with him on Wednesday and said he told the Kremlin chief "maybe you're going to have to keep fighting and suffering a lot." Reporters asked Merz, who has been an ardent supporter of Ukraine and recently lifted Germany's existing strike bans, if he agrees with Trump that "fighting it out" was the way to proceed. "I think we both agree on this war and how terrible this war is. And we are both looking for ways to stop it very soon," Merz said. "I told the president before we came in that he is the key person in the world who can really do that now by putting pressure on Russia, and we will have this debate later on again, how we can proceed jointly between the Europeans and the Americans. President Donald Trump has nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich to lead U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, sending a strong signal the administration will continue to play a leadership role in the alliance. Some allies, amid reports theTrump administration was reconsidering the position, worried the president would choose not to prioritize Europe and decline to place an American at the helm of NATO forces. A U.S. officer has filled the role since Gen. Dwight Eisenhower took the job in 1951 and is a symbol of American commitment to the region. Trump nominated Grynkewich, the Joint Staff's director of operations, to become the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe and commander, U.S. European Command. The nomination reinforces support for European allies just two weeks before NATO leaders gather in The Hague, Netherlands for an annual summit, which Trump and other alliance leaders will attend. The current Supreme Allied Commander, Gen. Chris Cavoli, told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in April that a U.S. decision to walk away from the role would prove a grave mistake. 'Our allies crave our leadership and are stronger with it, and are stronger for us,' he said. The discussions about not filling the role were part of a wider rethinking of the global U.S. footprint, according to a person familiar with the conversations, who like others, was granted anonymity to discuss internal matters. But the White House decided to keep a U.S. officer in the seat, the person said. The role is a critical one for European security. The official coordinates NATO military maneuvers and warfighting strategies across the continent, and handles nuclear deterrence. The person also commands American forces during any conflict in Europe. Lawmakers have advocated for keeping an American in the role so that a foreign leader would not oversee U.S. troops in a time of war. Grynkewich, an F-16 and F-22 pilot, has previously served as director of operations for U.S. Central Command, chief of plans for the European Command and the Pentagon's deputy director of global operations. "There was some concern about the U.S. pulling back here but this is a welcome signal that the U.S., even while shifting some priorities, still sees a secure Europe as a key priority,' said a European official. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, at NATO headquarters Thursday for a defense ministers meeting, expressed confidence that European countries would continue investing more in their own defense. The administration is pressing allies to commit 5 percent of GDP to the alliance, a number the U.S. has yet to meet. "I'm very encouraged by what we heard," Hegseth said after the meetings. "Countries in there are well exceeding 2% and we think very close, almost near consensus, on a 5 percent commitment to NATO."
