34-year-old CEO shares his No. 1 piece of advice for entrepreneurs—it helped him build a $1 billion company

Starting a company straight out of college, with no prior business experience, isn't always easy. To support himself and his flavored-water business Cirkul, Garrett Waggoner played professional football in Canada and worked as a car valet in the offseason, he says. His co-founder Andy Gay worked in the women's shoe section of a department store, Waggoner adds. Together, they sought advice from anyone and everyone. Today, Waggoner's top tip for young entrepreneurs has a hint of irony to it: Don't listen to everything you're told, the 34-year-old CEO says. "Every time you get advice from somebody who has grown a business, make sure that you're interpreting it through your own lens," says Waggoner. "What worked for [them] might not work for a different type of business." Waggoner and Gay launched their Tampa, Florida-based business in 2015, got their products — reusable water bottles with built-in disposable flavor cartridges — onto retail shelves in 2018, and obtained a $1 billion pre-money valuation during a $70 million fundraising round in 2022. Some of the advice they received in Cirkul's early years worked, Waggoner says: focusing on solving a real problem rather than trying to build a cool product and "obsessing" over customer experience. Before the pair landed on the Cirkul bottle's current design, they found themselves lost in imagining all of the cool things a new product could do, says Waggoner. Refocusing on solving a problem "made us ground everything we did in the customer's actual need, which is gold," he says. Other pieces of advice were less effective, he says, or simply weren't applicable to the type of business Waggoner and Gay wanted to run. They tried outsourcing their manufacturing, for example — a common practice for consumer product companies — but struggled to find a factory that would work with Cirkul to produce a novel product. "Most folks in the beverage space do cans and bottles, so when approached with something unique, they all declined to lean in," Waggoner says. "We, by necessity, were required to manufacture the product ourselves." Manufacturing their own product required a "tremendous amount of successes, failures and ultimately, learning," he adds. Cirkul's manufacturing currently takes place in warehouses in Tampa and Salt Lake City. Other entrepreneurs agree: You need to figure out when to listen to someone's advice, and when to break from conventional wisdom and trust your gut. "When you're just getting started in a small business, it's easy to drown an opportunity if you let yourself get pulled by different ideas," billionaire entrepreneur and investor Mark Cuban told CNBC Make It in March. Successful business owners take other people's feedback seriously while filtering out bad or irrelevant advice, Cuban added. Kopi Kenangan co-founder and CEO Edward Tirtanata offers similar advice: Don't ever sacrifice what makes your business unique. His Indonesia-based coffee chain, which brought in more than $100 million in sales in 2023, broke into the already-saturated coffee market by creating customized menus for different countries and tailoring items to local tastes and price points, Tirtanata said in May 2024. The strategy ran counter to the conventional wisdom of using a standardized global menu, which many other chains do, he noted. "The next Starbucks is not going to look like a Starbucks, the next McDonald's is not going to look like a McDonald's. The next Google is not going to look like a Google – you need to be radically different in order for you to compete against the incumbent," said Tirtanata.

Supreme Court requests DOJ input in utility antitrust petition

The Supreme Court is asking for the Justice Department's input on whether it should take up an antitrust case involving two southern utilities that could have broader implications for how courts evaluate business competition. On Monday, the justices invited Solicitor General D. John Sauer to file a brief on the case Duke Energy Carolinas v. NTE Carolinas II LLC. Duke Energy is aiming to overturn a 2024 lower bench ruling finding that a combination of actions the electric power company had taken involving Florida-based power supplier NTE could qualify as anticompetitive. At least four justices have to vote to take up a case. The solicitor general's view of the dispute's nationwide significance can be an important factor in deciding whether the justices will grant a petition. Advertisement The North Carolina-based company claims that a decision allowing a 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling to stand could revive a dormant legal theory that could open the door to more litigation among competing companies.

Amazon, A Small Pharmacy Player, Seeks To Dent CVS And Walgreens Medicare Share

Amazon Pharmacy is rolling out new features in hopes of attracting more seniors covered by Medicare's drug benefit, a potentially lucrative market dominated by CVS Health and Walgreens. In an announcement Tuesday, Amazon said it is launching a new 'caregiver support feature' that allows its customers to have someone else manage medications on their behalf. Once the caregivers are verified through a secure invitation, 'caregivers can now manage medications for their loved ones,' the company said. In addition, customers with Medicare Part D drug coverage can now access PillPack, Amazon's online pharmacy that is designed to simplify medication management, particularly for multiple prescriptions via pre-sorted and labeled packets delivered directly to patients' doors. It's the latest effort by the online retail giant Amazon to invest in its pharmacy business, which Drug Channels Institute estimates generated 'less than $2 billion in 2024 revenue - just 0.3% of the total prescription dispensing market.' Amazon doesn't disclose how many prescriptions it fills or financial information regarding its pharmacy and healthcare businesses. Amazon, which purchased PillPack seven years ago this month for more than $750 million, has yet to disclose revenues for its Amazon Pharmacy business in the parent company's quarterly earnings statements. In contrast, CVS filled 435 million prescriptions in the first quarter for an increase of 4.3% from the year ago period while Walgreens filled more than 309 million prescription in its most recent quarter, up 3.4%. Combined, Walgreens and CVS generated more than $370 billion in prescription revenues last year, According to Dryg Channels. CVS and Walgreens have the largest share of the U.S. prescription market by most measures at a combined 40% while Amazon's share is less than 1%, according to some studies. Neither CVS nor Walgreens would disclose how many Medicare Part D prescriptions the companies fill. By adding features for seniors, Amazon Pharmacy is looking to tap a Medicare prescription market growing by thousands every day. More than 11,000 Americans are turning 65 every day. Amazon is also trying to find a niche with Americans who are caring for an elderly family member. More than 50 million people in the U.S. 'are taking care of an aging family member,' Amazon said citing data from AARP. The aging population, coupled by industry statistics showing up to one-third of Americans don't take their medications as directed or never fill them. 'These updates deliver what our customers have been asking for—simpler medication management for themselves and their loved ones,' Amazon Pharmacy vice president John Love said. 'Whether you're a caregiver juggling multiple prescriptions for an aging parent, or a customer who could benefit from the convenience of pre-sorted packets delivered reliably each month, we're removing barriers and making pharmacy work better for you.'
