JD Vance sparks fury by breaking Vatican protocol...can you see what he did wrong?
A photo of JD Vance from his visit to Vatican City has sparked outrage after viewers spotted a huge breach of protocol.
The seemingly innocuous snap showed the Catholic Vice President holding his son inside the Sistine Chapel over Easter weekend.
However, photography and the use of electronic photography is strictly prohibited inside the holy site, according to the Vatican Museum's website.
The image soon sparked a backlash, with many online branding it disrespectful.
'For anyone who still says JD is a "good guy," um...wut? Taking this pic is basically like giving God the finger,' one person wrote on X.
'It's prohibited to preserve the amazing art and sanctity of the space. (I'm not Catholic, and even I know this. You'd think the #VP would, too.'
'I guess JD Vance thought the Sistine Chapel's strict no-photography rule was just a humble suggestion for Easter weekend, huh?' another added.
'Taking pictures in Sistine Chapel is strictly prohibited,' a third person fumed.
'JD Vance behaves like a hobo it's highly disrespectful. US administration act like 4 yrs old boys in a playground believing that they deserve all toys.'
The photograph was taken by official White House photographer Emily Higgins.
There is also precedent for other prominent figures being pictured inside the 552-year-old chapel, including former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Vance was in Italy for a meeting with the late Pope Francis.
They had an awkward exchange at the Vatican on Easter Sunday after the 88-year-old Pontiff slammed the Trump administration's treatment of illegal migrants.
It came just one day after Vance, an adult Catholic convert, appeared to have been snubbed by the Pope and was initially forced to meet with the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the foreign minister, Archbishop Peter Gallagher.
The vice president and the Holy Father did later meet for a 'brief' exchange which lasted lasted a few minutes.
The Pope offered the Catholic vice president three big chocolate Easter eggs for Vance's three young children, who did not attend, as well as a Vatican tie and rosaries.
Vance and the Pontiff's stances over migration and the Trump administration´s plans to deport migrants en masse clashed sharply. Francis made caring for migrants a hallmark of his papacy.
'I know you have not been feeling great but it's good to see you in better health,' Vance told the Pope. 'Thank you for seeing me.'
The Holy Father passed away the next day from a cerebral stroke, prompting worldwide mourning.
Francis died some 90 minutes after he was awoken by his alarm clock on Monday.
The Pontiff, who died today aged 88 at the Saint Martha residence in the Vatican, 'passed away peacefully', according to his doctors.
He reportedly woke up when his alarm went off at 6am, fell ill at 7am and died from a stroke at 7.35am, according to Corriere della Serra.

The practicing Catholic even found himself on the wrong side of the Pope himself when he got into another online beef with British politician Rory Stewart over Trump's deportation policies. So one would expect the online warrior to rush to the defense of his president in response to the firestorm of abuse unleashed by Musk against the president on Thursday, which began with accusations of ungratefulness and ended with claims of him being close to Jeffrey Epstein. But Vance has been remarkably quiet. His only public comment at the time of writing has been the kind of terse statement a wife gives in support of a cheating politician spouse. 'President Trump has done more than any person in my lifetime to earn the trust of the movement he leads. I'm proud to stand beside him,' Vance wrote on X. The next day, he continued with his lawyerly posts. 'There are many lies the corporate media tells about President Trump. One of the most glaring is that he's impulsive or short-tempered. Anyone who has seen him operate under pressure knows that's ridiculous,' he wrote. 'It's (maybe) the single biggest disconnect between fake media perception and reality,' he went on. Vance was asked by Trump to remain diplomatic in his dealings with Musk, The Independent learned from a source familiar with the situation. Regardless, the VP has other motivations for keeping quiet. For years, he has been dogged by rumors of dual loyalties between the tech billionaires who fueled his rise and the president he now serves. Vance first came to public attention as the best-selling author of Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir of a rough Appalachian upbringing that many liberals praised as an intellectual explanation of Trump's appeal to the white working class. But before that book set him on a path to Congress and the Senate, he was already being courted by a set of right-wing tech billionaires known as the 'PayPal mafia' — the billionaires Musk, David Sacks and Peter Thiel, who worked together at the pioneering online payments company back in the late Nineties and early Noughties and were bound together by a belief in deregulation, libertarianism and later, by darker right-wing ideology that railed against multiculturalism. Vance was working in venture capital at the time and went to work for Thiel at his San Francisco investment house, Mithril Capital. He responded to a tweet calling for Trump to be impeached and replaced with Vance with one word: 'Yes.' That is not an empty threat. Vance's path to the White House would inevitably require the support of Musk, the man who spent $395 million on electing Republicans in 2024. So his decision to ignore Musk's call for mutiny is an interesting — and calculated — choice. Much like Littlefinger, Vance has made sharp ideological turns and formed strategic alliances to find his way to within arm's length of the throne. He was once vehemently opposed to Trump, only to radically change course to stand by his side in his quest for power. 'Elon finally found a way to make Twitter fun again,' former senior Obama adviser and podcast host Dan Pfeiffer summarized in a post on X. The whole world got a front-row seat to the spectacle between the former 'first buddy' and the president Thursday, when they traded blows on their respective social media platforms, Truth Social and X. It began with Musk's critique of Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' and spiraled into a mudslinging match between the two billionaires. 'BREAKING: Vladimir Putin has offered to negotiate a peace deal between President Trump and Elon Musk,' X user Amuse wrote. Social media users, including Democrats, have been sharing hilarious memes of the breakup, drawing inspiration from Real Housewives to Mean Girls.
