"There were courageous police officers from the police headquarters with two mobile gendarmerie squadrons that we had in reserve, who intervened, who made numerous arrests, who prevented looting and vandalism. So, words have meaning. We can't talk about security failure. I'm not happy, obviously. I consider it wrong and it's a kind of failure that there was looting of businesses, especially on the night of Saturday to Sunday. My goal - and at the police headquarters, the person responsible is the police chief, I'm the boss, I'm the one who decides, I'm the one who is responsible - we said there shouldn't be any looting of businesses, and there was some anyway, so obviously there is a kind of failure."
On the Champs Elysees, bus shelters were smashed up and projectiles hurled at riot police on Saturday (May 31) who fired tear gas and water canons to push back surging crowds as thousands of supporters descended on the boutique-lined boulevard.
More than 500 people were arrested by police during the celebrations on Saturday, the interior ministry said, while two people were reported dead and 192 injured.

We should get a pretty good idea of how seriously Inter Milan is taking the FIFA Club World Cup on Saturday. The Italians were not at their best in a 1-1 draw against Monterrey in their opening match, adding to concerns that Inter would have a tough time getting up for this tournament after a grueling season that saw them finish as runners-up in both Serie A and the Champions League. Inter had a two-week break before heading to North America for the Club World Cup after falling just short of a historic season, so it's not a shock they were stodgy in their tilt with Monterrey. Inter fell behind by one goal early, but clawed back into the match and secured a 1-1 draw. Saturday's match with Urawa Red Diamonds should be a walk in the park for La Beneamata on paper, but if Inter are disinterested, the Japanese side are a threat to pull off a stunner at Lumen Field in Seattle. Urawa were also uninspiring in their opening match, a 3-1 loss to River Plate, and they'll likely need to pull the upset to have any chance of moving on in this tournament. The Red Diamonds were the only team in Group E that didn't get a point, and they'll be underdogs again in their final match of Round 1 against Monterrey. Yann Sommer of Inter Milan during a break in play at the FIFA Club World Cup. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters It's a massive ask, but Urawa have to go for this win. That should lead to a more aggressive approach from the Japanese side, which should leave them vulnerable to Inter's counterattack. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps And given how they defended against River Plate, that could lead to disaster. Syrian authorities arrest Bashar Assad's cousin on drug trafficking charges

DAMASCUS, Syria -- Syrian authorities have arrested a cousin of former President Bashar Assad, who is under U.S. sanctions for his alleged role in drug trafficking and support to forces loyal to the ousted government, the Interior Ministry said Saturday. The ministry did not say when or where Wassim Badi Assad was arrested. It said that he was wanted in cases of drug trafficking and other crimes before insurgents toppled the Assad family in December after a 54-year rule. The U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Wassim Assad in March 2023. It said Wassim Assad had publicly called for the formation of sectarian militias to support the government and was a key figure in the regional drug trafficking network, partnering with high-level suppliers to smuggle contraband, Captagon, and other drugs throughout the region. Syria's conflict that began in March 2011 fragmented the country, crumbled the economy and created fertile ground for the production of the amphetamine-like stimulant Captagon. Militias, warlords and the Assad government transformed the production of the drug from a small-scale operation run by criminal groups into a billion-dollar industrial revenue stream.
