Lionel Messi breaks silence in rare interview as Inter Miami hit new low in disastrous MLS season
Prior to the start of the MLS season, Inter Miami were tipped for bigger and better things as Lionel Messi hoped to finally capture the league title that had eluded him the last two seasons.
But as things stand in mid-May, that might be too much to ask of the Herons.
Messi and Inter Miami have won just four games in 12 matches since the start of April - including back-to-back losses that saw them eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
They've only one a single game - a 4-1 thrashing of the New York Red Bulls at home -in their last seven matches and lost three of their last five in the league.
So, when Messi gave a rare post-game interview to Apple TV's Michele Giannone in Spanish after a demoralizing 3-0 loss to in-state rivals Orlando City, the Argentinian World Cup winner reflected on his team's form.
'It´s a difficult time, but we're going to come through this,' Messi said in his native language.
'Now we'll really see if we're a team. These are difficult times. When everything is going well it's very easy, but when difficult times come - like now - we have to be more united than ever, be a real team, and get through it.'
The season prior, Inter Miami set the record for the best regular season in MLS history.
But this year, Messi and a squad made up of former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets and helmed by Javier Mascherano currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference and eleventh in the race for the Supporters Shield.
'We're coming off a period of bad results,' Messi said. 'But we have to keep working and think about what´s next.
'With three or four games left in May, we (have to) finish the best possible way to be able to face the Club World Cup.'
The newly revamped Club World Cup should yield positive results for Inter Miami. The furthest they'll travel in the group stage is a few hours north to Atlanta for a match against FC Porto of Portugal.
Their group stage matches against Al Ahly of Egypt and Palmeiras of Brazil will both take place in Miami.
Messi is on an expiring contract that lapses at the end of the current MLS season.
While the club has made it clear they want Messi to extend his deal, there's no indication if that will happen.
Mascherano believes that there will be some kind of solution soon.
'Hopefully in a few weeks we can have some news about Leo,' Mascherano said. 'I think it will be very, very important for the club, the fans, and for MLS.'
Inter Miami have three more matches before their Club World Cup campaign begins.
That starts this weekend with a fixture against the league-leading Philadelphia Union

Transgender athlete sends defiant message to critics after dominating girls' high school track meet
A transgender athlete told their critics to 'get a life' after they were booed for dominating a girl's state track championship in Washington. Veronica Garcia of East Valley of Spokane won the 400m by nearly a second at the championships on Saturday. Garcia also helped their school win the 4x100m relay. In 2024, Garcia became the first transgender athlete in Washington State to win a state track title and this weekend the 17-year-old was heckled by fans for the second year in a row. As reported by the Seattle Times, supporters cheered loudly for every other athlete during the medal ceremony, only for boos to ring out when Garcia's took to the podium. Earlier, during the warm-up, a man - wearing a shirt that read 'Save women's sports' - shouted 'Let's go girls!' and 'girls' race!' But the defiant 17-year-old hit back at her critics, telling the Seattle Times that the abuse was 'expected'. Look at the girls on the podium when the rightful champ, Lauren Matthew, is announced vs when the boy who stole her state title is announced. She is applauded. He is booed. Audio on. — Riley Gaines (@Riley_Gaines_) May 31, 2025 'But it maybe didn't have their intended effect. It made me angry, but not angry as in, I wanted to give up, but angry as in, I'm going to push,' Garcia said. 'I'm going to put this in the most PG-13 way, I'm just going to say it's a damn shame they don't have anything else better to do. I hope they get a life. But oh well. It just shows who they are as people.' The 17-year-old continued: 'I'm really proud of myself... I did what I came to do, and that's good enough for me.' Lauren Matthew, who came second in the 400m, was pictured holding a homemade sign which crowned her the 'real' champion. Before and after Garcia competed in the 4x400m relay, athletes from a rival school wore black T-shirts that read 'Keep Women's Sports Female.' In Washington, students are allowed to participate in sports based on their gender identity. That is despite Donald Trump signing an executive order - entitled 'Keeping Men out of Women's Sports' - and a string of controversial incidents involving transgender athletes this weekend. In California, AB Hernandez claimed gold in the high jump and triple jump at the state finals. A masked pro-trans protestor was also arrested at the event after being witnessed using a Progress Pride flag to attack a demonstrator. In Oregon, meanwhile, two female high jumpers refused to stand alongside a transgender rival on the podium at this weekend's high school state championships. Reese Eckard of Sherwood High School and Alexa Anderson of Tigard High School abandoned the medal ceremony in an apparent protest of a fifth-place finisher, who is reportedly transgender. Reese finished fourth in the state final while Anderson was third. Rather than taking their spots on the podium, footage obtained by Fox News showed the girls turning their backs to the crowd before being ushered away from the ceremony by an official.

Another erotic video of Stefon Diggs emerges after viral footage of NFL star flirting with bikini-clad women
Stefon Diggs has gone viral again after another awkward video of the New England Patriots star surfaced, with the wide receiver's future in New England in doubt. A Sunday afternoon Instagram post from Diggs' A-list girlfriend Cardi B shows her doing an erotic dance move in Diggs' direction. Diggs responds by palming his partner's behind and smacking it multiple times. Cardi B looks far from upset by the profane gesture, as she continues to do the dance move after eyeing her man. Diggs' lifestyle with his rap girlfriend comes into the limelight again less than a week after footage of him flirting with bikini-clad women with the 'WAP' performer close by went viral. As revealed by earlier this week, Cardi B was left seething by her NFL beau's antics. 'Cardi for her part, whether she is there or not, doesn't want her man flirting with any ladies,' the insider said. 'Girls will throw themselves on him all the time, but she wishes he wouldn't be a scumbag and flirt back.' 'Cardi has had her fair share of relationship issues, and she doesn't want it to continue with Stefon. And now that the video went viral, she is really frustrated with him that he would allow that to happen,' the source continued. 'He should know better, the fact that he didn't realize what was going on around him is embarrassing and she is mad at him.' In other photos of Cardi B's post she is seen on a boat nearly kissing Diggs, receiving hundreds of red roses, as well as getting her hair done. The veteran wide receiver was filmed on a yacht in Florida surrounded by scantily-clad women over Memorial Day Weekend. The viral video captured on Monday showed Diggs lounging shirtless on the boat and chatting with three women, all dressed in bikinis, who called him 'daddy.' Toward the end of the clip, he produced a plastic bag containing an unknown substance that one of the women took from him. Diggs was seen holding court with the gaggle of fawning women as loud music blared in the background. While it was hard to make out the full conversation, at one point Diggs repeatedly asked the three women, 'What's my name?' and at least two of them responded by calling him 'daddy.' The Patriots signed Diggs to a three-year, $69million contract in late March after one season with the Houston Texans. While he is currently recovering from a torn ACL, he may have already landed himself in hot water before the 2025 season has even begun. Diggs took to social media on Saturday to share a series of snaps from the past month before suggesting he needed to turn his attention to his work on the field. 'to the month of May, I appreciate you none the less… gotta stay focused,' he captioned the carousel of 20 photos, which included a picture of him sat courtside with Cardi at a New York Knicks game. New Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the viral clip on Wednesday, after Diggs was absent from team practice. Vrabel, a former teammate of Tom Brady, claimed that any conversations on the issue would remain in-house. 'And so the message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions,' Vrabel told reporters. 'And any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him and I and the club.' The insider warned that 31-year-old Diggs could be facing greater punishment for going against the 'Patriots way.' 'Mike Vrabel and the Patriots are looking to keep the incident as much in-house as they can from this point forward,' the source explained. 'It is already more of a situation than it needs to be and is not the Patriots way, nor is it the look Vrabel wants for the team,' the source continued. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, New England could take serious action against the receiver in the aftermath of the Memorial Day video.
