York archive film shows women's role in shaping city
A film telling stories of the women who shaped York's history will be screened ahead of International Women's Day.York St John University will screen its film Women of York at a free event later.Drawing on archive footage spanning from the early 1900s to the 21st century, the film showcases the everyday lives of York's women and their contributions to the city's development.Senior history lecturer Dr Elodie Duché said it was "hugely important to increase the visibility of women's history and to foster a sense of belonging in the city".
The film has been produced in collaboration with the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive.Dr Brendan Paddison, associate professor and interim dean of York Business School, said: "Documenting and showcasing women's histories in York is essential to understanding the full story of its past."The city's history is not complete without the stories of the women who shaped it."
Key York landmarks are featured in the film, including women skating on a frozen River Ouse, workers at the Rowntree chocolate factory and protests outside the Minster.It is part of the university's wider Women of York project, which aims to raise awareness of the role women have played in the city's history.The film will be shown at the York St John Creative Centre at 17:00 GMT, followed by a discussion about women's history.It comes ahead of International Women's Day on Saturday.
