Happy birthday sucker! Dyson gets cheeky birthday gift from his rivals

To celebrate Sir James Dyson's 78th birthday on Friday (May 2), his cheeky rivals at Samsung delivered their latest model to his doorstep.
Wrapped in a giant blue bow and accompanied by balloons it arrived in style at the Dyson HQ in Malmsebury, Wiltshire.
With cameras rolling, YouTuber Zac Alsop and his delivery crew arrived to hand over the Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI to Sir James, inventor of the original bagless vacuum cleaner.
Samsung's team say their stick vacuum cleaner is the most powerful in the world. And their stunt was just pure, clean fun.
'At Samsung, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. The Bespoke AI Jet™ Ultra isn't just powerful, it's the most powerful stick vacuum on the market. As well as power, it has intelligent features like AI Cleaning that detects each surface and adjusts the power accordingly, alongside being one of the lightest yet. This campaign is our way of putting that superiority to the test, and having a bit of fun while we're at it,' said Tanya Weller, Marketing Director for Digital Appliances, Samsung Electronics UK&I.
To keep the celebration going, Samsung is giving away over £90,000 worth of vacuums at its Samsung KX store in Coal Drops Yard, London.
In honour of each of Sir James's 78 years, the first 78 people to arrive with a birthday card for him will receive a Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI, worth £1,200, completely free of charge.
All you need to do to get one is to bring a birthday card for Sir James and join the queue outside Samsung KX on Saturday 3 May. The first 78 people through the doors when they open at 11am will receive a ticket that secures you a free Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI. The vacuum will then be ordered by Samsung staff for home delivery on the day.
You can even hand over your birthday card and get yourself a slice of cake and party bag on the way out.
Even those who miss out can expect discount vouchers - plus a full birthday party for Sir James and a chance to try out the Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI.

Getty Images and Stability AI face off in British copyright trial that will test AI industry

Getty Images is facing off against artificial intelligence company Stability AI in a London courtroom for the first major copyright trial of the generative AI industry. Opening arguments before a judge at the British High Court are scheduled for Monday. The trial could last for three weeks. Stability, based in London, owns a widely used AI image-making tool that sparked enthusiasm for the instant creation of AI artwork and photorealistic images upon its release in August 2022. OpenAI introduced its surprise hit chatbot ChatGPT three months later. Seattle-based Getty has argued that the development of the AI image maker, called Stable Diffusion, involved 'brazen infringement' of Getty's photography collection 'on a staggering scale." Tech companies have long argued that 'fair use' or 'fair dealing' legal doctrines in the United States and United Kingdom allow them to train their AI systems on large troves of writings or images. Getty was among the first to challenge those practices when it filed copyright infringement lawsuits in the United States and the United Kingdom in early 2023. 'What Stability did was inappropriate,' Getty CEO Craig Peters told The Associated Press in 2023. He said creators of intellectual property should be asked for permission before their works are fed into AI systems rather than having to participate in an 'opt-out regime." Stability has argued that the case doesn't belong in the United Kingdom because the training of the AI model technically happened elsewhere, on computers run by U.S. tech giant Amazon. Similar cases in the U.S. have not yet gone to trial. Stable Diffusion's roots trace to Germany, where computer scientists at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich worked with the New York-based tech company Runway to develop the original algorithms. The university researchers credited Stability AI for providing the servers that trained the models, which require large amounts of computing power.

Sir Keir Starmer vows to overcome sceptical public on ‘harnessing power' of AI

The Prime Minister said AI would cut through planning red tape to speed up housebuilding and promised £1 billion of funding to increase the UK's compute power. Sir Keir acknowledged people's concern about the rapid rise of AI technology and the risk to their jobs but stressed the benefits it would have on the delivery of public services, automating bureaucracy and allowing staff such as social workers and nurses to be 'more human'. In a speech at London Tech Week, Sir Keir said: 'Some people out there are sceptical. 'They do worry about AI taking their job.' Even businesses were worried about the 'relentless' pace of change, he said as he stressed the need for the Government and the tech sector to work in partnership. 'When it comes to harnessing the power of this technology, I believe that the way we work through this together is critical and that means a partnership,' he said. The Prime Minister told the audience of business chiefs and tech experts: 'We are leaning into this. 'We are excited about the opportunity that this could have, will have on the lives of millions of people and making their lives better.' He said the Government was 'committing an extra £1 billion of funding to scale up our compute power by a factor of 20'. That would mean that 'in this global race, we can be an AI maker and not an AI taker'. It will also help support the transformation of public services, he said, pointing to the new work on planning. The Prime Minister announced the launch of Extract, an AI assistant for planning officers and local councils, developed by government with support from Google. It will help councils convert decades-old, handwritten planning documents and maps into data in minutes, and will power new types of software to slash the 250,000 estimated hours spent by planning officers each year manually checking the paperwork. Sir Keir said: 'For too long, our outdated planning system has held back our country, slowing down the development of vital infrastructure and making it harder to get the homes we need built.' One million students will be given access to learning resources to start equipping them for 'the tech careers of the future' as part of the Government's £187 million TechFirst scheme, Downing Street said. Sir Keir said: 'I think that training young people earlier on in AI and tech means that they will obviously be better skilled as they come into work but also they will be much better at it than us. 'I've got a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl and they already understand AI and tech in a way which is really difficult to have even conceived of a decade ago.' Meanwhile, staff at firms across the country will be trained to 'use and interact' with chatbots and large language models as part of a plan backed by Google and Microsoft to train 7.5 million workers in AI skills by 2030. Jensen Huang, chief executive of tech giant Nvidia said the UK was in a 'goldilocks' zone because of its combination of academic expertise and finance, but had been held back by a lack of infrastructure for AI. Sharing a platform with the Prime Minister, he said: 'The UK has one of the richest AI communities anywhere on the planet: the deepest thinkers, the best universities, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, amazing start-ups.' It was behind only the US and China in venture capital investment, he added. 'The ecosystem is really perfect for take-off, it's just missing one thing: it is surprising, this is the largest AI ecosystem in the world without its own infrastructure.' That was why the Prime Minister's £1 billion pledge on compute power was 'such a big deal', he said.
