Remains of U.K. man missing for more than 2 years found in Georgia woods, FBI says
The remains of a United Kingdom man missing for nearly two-and-a-half years have been found in a privately owned wooded area near Kingsland, Georgia, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
Alex Hodgson Doughty was reported missing in September 2022 and had been visiting Jacksonville, Florida, about 35 miles south of where the remains were found, the FBI said in announcing the discovery on Friday.
The cause and manner of death were unavailable.
An FBI Evidence Response Team based in Jacksonville led the search when the remains were found on Feb. 4, the bureau said in its statement. It said the Medical Examiner's Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the remains as belonging to Doughty.
The U.K. nonprofit LBT Global, which helps families with relatives who are victims of crimes overseas, said on a web page dedicated to Doughty that he paid for a ride to Kingsland on one of the last days he was seen, on Sept. 11, 2022, when he was 30. The FBI listed Doughty's age as 32.
He was at a Jacksonville bar and grill that Sunday afternoon when he took the ride, LBT Global said. Within an hour, it said, he was in Kingsland, a small city on the state's southwest coast, about three miles north of the Florida border, that touts itself as a destination for outdoor adventure.
A Facebook page, Help Find Alex, said he had been staying in Orlando when he went 140 miles north to Jacksonville and then north again to Kingsland, the latter via a ride-hailing service.
The National Institute of Justice's National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) page for Doughty said he was last seen at 1 a.m. on Sept. 12 in the parking lot of an auto parts store. It also said he had been traveling by via ride-hailing service.
The FBI didn't provide details on the discovery, stating only that a criminal case was not forthcoming. "No criminal charges are expected," it said.
The bureau indicated that FBI investigators who specialize in tracking cellphone locations, part of the Jacksonville FBI office's Cellular Analysis Survey Team, helped locate the remains.
Speaking in the Friday statement, the FBI's special agent in charge of the Jacksonville office, Kristin Rehler, praised the survey team's members for being 'relentless in their efforts to narrow down potential search locations.'
"While we had hoped to bring Mr. Doughty's family better news, we are thankful to be able to provide them with some closure," she said.

The FBI and port police are reviewing the incident and will work with prosecutors to decide whether to pursue charges, according to the statement. As of 1:58 p.m., Port of Seattle updated their travel alert to state all passengers have been deplaned and the center runway had been reopened. According to the statement, the aircraft was cleared by 3 p.m. and towed back to the terminal, and runway 16R/34L was reopened by 3:15 p.m. At 3:19 p.m., the Port of Seattle issued another update announcing that the airport would return to normal operations. Manhunt continues for Minnesota shooting suspect Vance Boelter
Around 24 hours after police say a gunman killed a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband, plus wounded another lawmaker and his wife, suspect Vance Boelter remains on the run, authorities have said. The shootings began around 2 a.m. Saturday, when Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both shot multiple times at their home in Champlin, Minnesota, authorities said. Soon after, State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed at their home in Brooklyn Park. Police encountered the gunman leaving Hortman's house at around 3:35 a.m., the officers heading there to check on the lawmaker after responding to the earlier shooting at Hoffman's home. The suspect exchanged gunfire with police and was able to escape and flee on foot, authorities said. The FBI is "using every available resource to locate Vance Boelter," FBI Minneapolis Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. said in a statement. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Boelter's arrest. The 57-year-old suspect is alleged to have gained access to the victim's homes while posing as a police officer. Police believe that when the shooter opened fire, he was wearing a latex mask that looked realistic, sources said. Boelter -- a husband and father, according to an online biography -- has touted an extensive background in security and military training, according to an ABC News review of his online presence and professional history. Boelter helped lead the private security firm Praetorian Guard Security Services, which is based in the Twin Cities area, according to the company website. Dozens of Minnesota Democrats were on a target list written by the gunman, according to law enforcement sources. Those on the list included Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. The wife of the wounded Minnesota state senator targeted during an overnight assassination attempt shielded the couple's daughter as the masked gunman opened fire on the family, missing the couple's vital organs by inches, family and reports said. Yvette Hoffman jumped on top of her adult daughter, Hope, while alleged assassin Vance Luther Boetler fired multiple shots at her and State Sen. John Hoffman inside their Minneapolis suburb home early Saturday morning, according to Hoffman's nephew.
