Some like it hot: Minjee Lee sizzles at LPGA golf major

Yahoo20 hours ago

Minjee Lee has matched the searing heat with a sizzling start to the PGA Championship, women's golf's third major of the year in Texas.
Drinking litres and litres of water and taking refuge under an umbrella, Lee collected seven birdies in a first-round three-under-par 69 at PGA Frisco.

As the afternoon starters battled extreme winds as well as the soaring temperatures, Australia's dual major winner was safely in the clubhouse in second spot, just one shot behind Thai superstar Jeeno Thitikul.
"I putted really great today. I made a lot of birdie putts and a whole bunch of up-and-down par putts as well," Lee said.
"My iron game was pretty solid as well, but I think I need to sharpen up my drives a little bit. But I felt quite good today.
"I was clutch under like 14 feet."
Lee at one point reached five under for a two-stroke buffer following back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, but dropped shots on 16 and 18 to open the door for Thitikul to snare the lead.
The Perth ace was nevertheless happy to just be back in the clubhouse after a gruelling morning battling the conditions.
"I just kept telling my caddie, 'Can you give me another water, can you give me another water?' So, I don't know. I don't think we could have enough out there. It's really hot," Lee said.
"It's the same for everyone. I mean, if it's tough for me it's going be tough for pretty much the whole field.
"Just try and use my umbrella to shade the sun and the more wind we have it's a little bit cooler so just try and hydrate and eat well on the course."
Thitikul started slowly, slipping to two over with a double-bogey six on the fifth hole.

But that was her lone blemish before reeling off six birdies in her last 13 holes to sit pretty atop the leaderboard.
World No.1 Nelly Korda shot an even-par 72, three days after aggravating a neck injury during a practice round.
While Korda said she doesn't feel pain hitting shots, the two-time major champion said she has pain "just with rotation" of her neck and that it is hard to get comfortable sleeping at night.
"It's better, yeah. Getting better every day, which is nice," she said.
"Just because I injured it last year, whenever I do injure my neck it takes a little bit longer than normal.
"I kind of tweaked it before my round with Ariya (Jutanugarn) in Vegas this year, during the night I couldn't move then, so thankfully it wasn't as bad as that day. ... Just takes me like a week to kind of recover when I tweak my neck now."

Draft These Kickers In 2025 Fantasy Football

HOUSTON, TEXAS - OCTOBER 06: Ka'imi Fairbairn #15 of the Houston Texans celebrates with teammates ... More after kicking the game-winning field goal to beat the Buffalo Bills 23-20 at NRG Stadium on October 06, 2024 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by) Getty Images After breaking down the top three defenses to draft in 2025 fantasy football last week, it's only right to do the same for the kickers. Since we don't have any official ADP for these kickers yet, we'll be breaking down which kickers you should target in 2025. The idea of projecting these kickers for 2025 fantasy points is simple. We'll be looking at what these kickers did in 2024, then looking to see which of these offenses is going to improve next year. Better offenses have more red zone opportunities, giving kickers more extra points or field goal chances. Let's just make something clear. Brandon Aubrey should easily be the number one kicker taken in 2025. If your league mates forgot about Aubrey, he had the most fantasy points per game for a kicker with 11.3. Keep in mind that Aubrey did this with a Dallas Cowboys offense that suffered without Dak Prescott. Not only is Prescott going to be back in 2025, but the Cowboys added George Pickens. There's no reason why Aubrey can't be the top kicker next year, with his situation only getting better. If Aubrey is on the board when you're going to take a kicker, draft him. Ka'imi Fairbairn has a chance to finish even better than 4th in PPG next season for a kicker. Last year, Fairbairn had 10.1 PPG even with a struggling Houston Texans offense. Former 2nd overall pick C. J. Stroud had a sophomore slump, throwing three fewer touchdowns and having seven more interceptions than his rookie year. Stroud is a talented player, and you should expect him to turn things around for the Texans. Especially when you take into account what the Texans did in the NFL Draft. While the team lost Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell is likely going to be out for the 2025 season, they made some big moves at wide receiver. First, the team added Jayden Higgins with the 34th overall pick (2nd round) in the draft. Expect him to be a big contributor right away. On top of that, the Texans selected Jaylin Noel with the 79th overall pick (3rd round). With Stroud having Higgins and Noel to pair with Nico Collins, this offense should benefit Fairbairn in a big way next season. INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 15: Place kicker Chase McLaughlin #4 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ... Chase McLaughlin (TB) Last season, Chase McLaughlin was the 6th kicker in PPG at 9.6, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense looked great. With McLaughlin, there are a few reasons why he should finish even better than this in 2025. For one, Baker Mayfield is great, but he just had a career-high year in passing touchdowns with 41. If that comes down just a little bit, that will result in more field goal chances for McLaughlin. On top of that, the Buccaneers will be getting a healthy Chris Godwin and Mike Evans for the 2025 season. If that wasn't enough, the Buccaneers also drafted Emeka Egbuka with the 19th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Between some touchdown regression from Mayfield and the addition of Evans, McLaughlin could be in for a massive leap in 2025 fantasy football.

KPMG Women's PGA: Former world No. 1 makes double, walks off and WDs from LPGA major

FRISCO, Texas — Jin Young Ko has withdrawn from the KPMG Women's PGA due to illness. The former No. 1 shot 74 in the opening round and was shown on the broadcast leaving the golf course after making double bogey on the 12th hole. She was six over in her last four holes, moving to 10 over on the championship. The temperatures in steamy Texas were in the low-90s, with a feels-like temp of 99, and gusts up to 30 mph. The 29-year-old Ko, a 15-time winner on the LPGA, tied for 14th at the U.S. Women's Open and took a share of sixth at Chevron. More: KPMG Women's PGA live updates: Cut line tracker from LPGA major

As Micah Parsons contract negotiations continue, Cowboys should remember the key ingredient to their ‘instant grits' defense

When the Dallas Cowboys secondary took the field in recent years, they waited for the signal. How quickly should they expect their opponent to get the ball out? Al Harris, Dallas' defensive backs coach from 2021-24, would give them a clue. Advertisement 'I used to say, 'Instant grits,'' Harris told Yahoo Sports recently from Chicago, where he's now the Bears' defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator. 'When you boil water, you just put the grits in there. So it's funny because [the defensive backs] would be like, 'Hey, how the grits?'' In other words: How effective was the Cowboys' pass rush at pressuring and hurrying the quarterback? Harris' metaphor came in handy most when edge rusher Micah Parsons was healthy. Harris, also the Cowboys' assistant coach last year, knew which play calls gave the two-time All-Pro edge rusher the green light to pressure and when his defensive backs should be ready accordingly. Injuries limited Parsons to 13 games in 2024, but Parsons nonetheless finished with the fifth-most quarterback pressures in the league. With 75 total pressures, his 5.77 per game led the league among defenders who played at least a third of the season, per NFL Next Gen Stats. Advertisement Next Gen Stats credits a defender with a quarterback pressure when the defender tallies a sack; gets within 2 yards of a quarterback at a forward pass; or within 1.5 yards of the quarterback at any point in the play. Parsons has met those criteria 335 times in four regular seasons with Dallas. He's raced to 52.5 sacks in that period. Harris learned to tee off his secondary to takeaway opportunities Parsons' pressure would create. 'It'd be like second quarter [and I'd say,] 'Hey, grits hot,'' Harris said. 'They'll give me a chance to watch Micah rush a couple of times to where I say, 'OK, he's going to beat these guys all day. And I just say, 'Hey man, grits hot, so let's get to the ball. Advertisement ''Let's get to the ball.'' The Cowboys' success in head coach Brian Schottenheimer's first season leading the team will hinge heavily on Parsons' dominance. Dallas' 2021 first-round pick is a game-wrecker. And the Cowboys are currently negotiating an extension with Parsons. Closing the deal hasn't gone as quickly as cooking instant grits. But will Dallas and Parsons find a middle ground soon? Parsons attended minicamp practices this month as he enters the final year of his contract, the fifth-year option of his rookie deal that Dallas picked up. Schottenheimer praised Parsons' attendance. 'I think it just shows you he's serious about what we've talked about, which is developing that leadership mentality, the mindset to be a guy that we can count on —and not just the fourth quarter when he's got to make a big sack or get pressure on the quarterback, but just in general throughout the course of a week,' Schottenheimer told reporters. 'He's doing the things he's supposed to do in terms of he's training, he's prepping, he's been in, he's been out. Advertisement 'Nobody's more excited than Micah about what we're building here.' Quarterback Dak Prescott said the locker room is 'very confident that Micah's going to get this deal done,' with Prescott understanding the business considerations after negotiating two extensions with the Cowboys himself. Will Dallas close the deal before the Cowboys' charter is scheduled to arrive in Oxnard, Calif. on July 20 for training camp? 'I'm pretty hopeful,' Parsons said of that timeline. 'I'm still hanging tight. I understand it's up to [Jerry Jones] and he gives the green light on everything. So hopefully something's done by next month.' Advertisement Until then, Parsons said he'll continue to learn the Cowboys' new defensive system under coordinator Matt Eberflus, as Parsons gives pointers to teammates while at the facility and training with cornerback Trevon Diggs while away from it. 'The simple things,' he said of his guidance. 'It's not always the major things that make football great. It's always the small details, the footwork, the positioning, the angles. 'We'll watch film together and I can tell guys what I see from a vetted experience.' Parsons plans to attend training camp with or without a deal, he said, already reserving a house for his family in California during the Cowboys' nearly four weeks there. Would he practice without a deal? 'We'll see,' Parsons said. 'Time will tell.'
