‘This Is Nuts': Former GOP Rep Slams Gavin Newsom for Hosting Steve Bannon on Podcast
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger slammed California Gov. Gavin Newsom for bringing controversial MAGA acolyte Steve Bannon onto his podcast.
Appearing on CNN's Table for Five on Saturday, Kinzinger accused Newsom of opportunism for hosting Bannon—a conspiracy theorist who continues to push the false claim that President Donald Trump won the 2020 election.
'I always thought he was kind of a 'he'll be whatever he needs to be' politician—this is way worse," said Kinzinger, who represented Illinois in the House of Representatives. 'There are many of us that actually—I'm not saying this for sympathy—basically sacrificed a career taking on Steve Bannon. Newsom is trying to build a career.'
Observers have suggested Newsom may be positioning himself to run for president in 2028 by courting the ring wing.
The Republican National Committee censured Kinzinger after he criticized Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election. He did not seek reelection in 2022.
The former Illinois congressman argued that Bannon wasn't just a typical political opponent, listing conspiracy theories he has spread, his role in inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection, and his jail sentence for defying a congressional subpoena.
'This is a bad man, and to platform him ... this is nuts,' he said.
On Newsom's podcast, Bannon reiterated his claim that Trump won the 2020 election. Newsom failed to challenge Bannon's assertion and instead praised him for his efforts to get Trump back into office.
'I appreciate the notion of agency, that we're not bystanders in the world, it's decisions not conditions that determine our fate and future,' he said.
Newsom had previously faced backlash from progressives after breaking ranks on transgender rights and hosting another MAGA firebrand, Charlie Kirk, on his podcast.
Challenged by Kirk on trans athletes participating in women's sports, Newsom said, 'I completely agree with you on that. It's deeply unfair.'

Bark Box CEO apologizes for employee's internal message comparing PRIDE collection to MAGA toys
The CEO of BarkBox, the company that offers a monthly subscription service for boxes of dog toys and treats, has issued a public apology for a "disrespectful and hurtful" internal message that leaked on social media. A screenshot of the message that circulated on Reddit described the decision to immediately pause paid ads and lifecycle marketing pushes for the company's Pride kit. "While celebrating Pride is something we may value, we need to acknowledge that the current climate makes this promotion feel more like a political statement than a universally joyful moment for all dog people," the message reads in part. "If we wouldn't feel comfortable running a promotion centered around another politically charged symbol (like a MAGA-themed product), it's worth asking whether this is the right moment to run this particular campaign." "Right now, pushing this promo risks unintentionally sending the message that 'we're not for you' to a large portion of our audience," the message concludes. BarkBox confirmed to Business Insider the authenticity of the screenshot. The author of the message is unclear. Founder and CEO Matt Meeker apologized for the "disrespectful and hurtful" message in an Instagram post on Wednesday. "I do not agree with the content of the message. It wasn't good, it doesn't reflect our values, and I'm deeply sorry that it happened," he said. "We stand by the products," he wrote about the Pride kits, noting that the company had no plans to remove them. While the company has donated a portion of profits from its Pride collection to an organization supporting LGBTQ people in past years, it'll donate 100% of the revenue from the collection this year, he added. The company's Pride collection is available as an optional add-on for BarkBox and Super Chewer subscribers, and has been offered for the past four years. The initial pullback on Pride isn't unique to BarkBox. Some of the biggest retailers in the US have walked back their support for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, with some taking cues from the Trump administration's stance on the matter. Target last year scaled back its Pride Month collection after receiving backlash from conservatives over the merchandise in prior years. In late November, Walmart announced it was ending some of its DEI initiatives and taking down some LGBTQ-related merchandise from its website.

Yes, the Trump Admin Is Still Very Much Attacking Abortion Rights
The Trump administration has moved to revoke Biden-era federal guidelines that require hospitals to provide emergency abortions to women, regardless of state law. It's a stark reminder that amid the chaos of President Donald Trump's first few months back in office, the MAGA movement remains committed to denying women life-saving medical treatment, and their right to bodily autonomy. The guidance — which Biden issued in 2022 in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade — was essentially a reminder to hospitals that under the 1986 Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), emergency rooms that accept Medicare funding (nearly every emergency room in the country) are required to provide an exam and stabilizing care to any patient that walks through its door. The Biden administration argued that the law covered emergency abortions, should they be necessary to the health of a pregnant patient. On Tuesday night, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a statement rescinding the directive. The agency claimed it would 'continue to enforce EMTALA, which protects all individuals who present to a hospital emergency department seeking examination or treatment, including for identified emergency medical conditions that place the health of a pregnant woman or her unborn child in serious jeopardy.' 'CMS will work to rectify any perceived legal confusion and instability created by the former administration's actions,' the statement added. The decision is not the only challenge to the Biden administration's interpretation of EMTALA in recent years. Last year, the Supreme Court allowed Texas to begin enforcing a ban on virtually all abortions in the state — including emergency room abortions — in defiance of the previous administration's EMTALA guidelines. In a separate 2024 case brought by Idaho's House speaker against the Biden administration, the Supreme Court ruled that hospitals in Idaho could provide emergency abortions while lower courts continued to debate the larger questions of EMTALA's jurisdiction. Now that Biden's guidance has been rolled back, other states could begin restricting doctors in emergency rooms from providing life-saving obstetrics treatment to patients. 'If there was ever any doubt about where the Trump administration stands on abortion, it should be clear now: even in cases of life or death, they want to block your ability to get an abortion,' Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Alexis McGill Johnson wrote in a Tuesday statement. 'Every day, this administration strikes another blow at our most fundamental right: to make our own decisions about our bodies and our futures. Women have died because they couldn't get the lifesaving abortion care they needed. The Trump administration is willing to let pregnant people die, and that is exactly what we can expect.' Anderson Cooper Hilariously Rejects Birthday Offer From Fellow CNN Reporter: 'Uh, I'm Good'
Anderson Cooper cracked a warranted smile Tuesday when offered a 'lumpy' birthday gift from fellow CNN reporter Donie O'Sullivan, who had just presented an interview segment with Mike Lindell — the MyPillow CEO currently on trial for defamation. Lindell, who parroted baseless claims about the 2020 election being stolen from President Donald Trump, appeared in federal court Tuesday for calling former Dominion Voting Systems staffer Dr. Eric Coomer a 'traitor to the United States' for his supposed role. O'Sullivan reported live Tuesday from Denver, Colorado, to discuss the trial's opening statements and played footage for Cooper of the CEO defending his pillows during a 2023 deposition after being asked about 'lumpy pillow calls' from dissatisfied customers. 'No, they're not lumpy pillows, that's not what they call on, OK?' Lindell told the attorney at the time. 'When you say 'lumpy pillows,' now you're an asshole! You're an asshole, you got that? You're an asshole is what you are!' O'Sullivan spoke with Lindell outside the courthouse as part of his report and noted during their interview that this might be the first trial where jurors, who were asked during jury selection if they owned a MyPillow, were 'selected based on what pillow they slept on.' When the prerecorded footage concluded, O'Sullivan cheekily offered Cooper one for his 58th birthday: 'Anderson, I know today's your birthday. We're going to try to bring you back a MyPillow, but some people are saying they're pretty lumpy.' 'Uh, I'm good, I'm good on the pillows,' Cooper replied with a grin. 'Thank you, I appreciate it. [I'm good on] MyPillows, not my pillows. I'm good with what I got, thank you.' Watch the moment below beginning at 4:40. Dominion sued Lindell for defamation in 2021 for $1.3 billion in damages. The company accused him in the filing of causing 'enormous harm' with a 'viral disinformation campaign' to tarnish the firm with a baseless allegation that they were involved in election fraud. Smartmatic, another voting equipment company, similarly sued Lindell for defamation in 2022. Coomer, who said he had to go into hiding as a result of Lindell's actions, is seeking undisclosed damages. 'It upended my life and my career to this day, four and a half years later,' Coomer said during the trial, per the Denver Gazette.
