Take a good, long look at the new Nissan Micra's pristinely moulded flanks and immaculate wheels while you can. Everyone's favourite learner car has returned as an electrified supermini, ready to be silently dinged into oblivion by an entirely new generation of drivers.
We jest, of course. This, the sixth generation of the Japanese carmaker's venerable B-segment hero, utilises the new 'AmpR Small' platform that underpins the award-winning Renault 5. Though here it's treated to a distinctly Nissan silhouette.
Advertisement - Page continues below
A silhouette designed in London and carrying a few elements of Micras gone by. Like the so-called 'iconic' headlights you'll remember from the third-gen 'K12'. Unlike that Noughties car, the new one certainly looks less surprised by everything around it.
The arches have been phattened to give it more SUV-like presence, while 'a distinctive lower lip suggests a lower centre of gravity'. There's also what Nissan calls an 'ice-cream scoop': an indent that runs from the front door in a line to the rear door. It is apparently 'reminiscent of the shape a scoop would make if dragged across the surface of untouched ice cream'.
You won't get any ice cream colours, sadly, though Nissan said there are 14 available, as well as two-tone options. Wheels are huge too: 18in, available in three designs depending on your spec.
Speaking of which, there'll be two battery options available from launch: a 40kWh version offering 121bhp (90kW), 166lb ft, and a claimed range of up to 195 miles. This entry-level e-Micra weighs in at 1,400kg.
Advertisement - Page continues below
The second one deploys a bigger 52kWh battery for bigger numbers all round: 148bhp, 181lb ft, up to 253 miles of range and a kerbweight of 1,524kg. Both cars get heat pumps, V2L tech, plus battery heating and cooling as standard. And while the little battery can charge at up to 80kW, the big one can use a 100kW hose that'll top up from 15 to 80 per cent in half an hour.
And when you want to use up those electrons, Nissan promises 'brilliant driving dynamics, and a best-in-class ride and handling'. Well, as 'best' as the Renault 5. It gets the same setup as its French cousin – independent front, multi-link rear, passive dampers – along with regenerative braking and three drive modes that run from comfort, sport and eco. If this is a wholesale carryover from the R5, it'll be great to drive.
Great to sit in, too. There's the obligatory massive high-res touchscreen plonked in the middle – a 10.1in configurable unit – while the driver gets their own 10.1in display. And because this is a Japanese supermini, there's a moulded outline of Mount Fuji in the storage area between the front seats. Those seats btw, are available in various materials depending on spec, while the ambient lighting stretches to 48 different colour options. Storage mirrors the R5: a 326-litre boot, extendable to 1,106-litres if you fold the rear seats down.
Google's been hardwired into the bones of the new Micra, which means everything from the sat nav to your music, phone, and even vehicle functionality is run by the American tech giant. Enlist the services of the Google Assistant, and you'll be able to ask it to change the temperature, adjust the air-con, heat the seats or navigate to a particular destination. Like your local learner centre.

Speaking of which, there's a tonne of safety kit bundled in, like adaptive cruise, emergency braking and so on, as well as all the other stuff you'll probably not turn off in this car. Not if you're attempting to reverse around a corner.
'We are proud to oversee the return of the Micra name to Nissan's range in Europe,' said Nissan's AMIEO regional VP Arnaud Charpentier. 'It's a name with over 40 years of history. It will electrify the streets wherever it goes.'
Nissan's hoping that history will pay off: the new Micra arrives at a time when the beleaguered Japanese carmaker is fighting for its very life. Only last week, it announced further job losses, shutting seven factories and pausing all post-2026 new car development.
This Micra then, along with the incoming new Leaf, Juke and a new city car, will shoulder a very heavy burden. Expect it to be parallel parking on a street near you later this year when European sales kick off.

Nissan Rogue Reliability: This Is The Most Dependable Model Year

A Good SUV Let Down By An Infamous Transmission It may live in the shadow of its Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V rivals, but the Nissan Rogue is a capable compact crossover and one of the best-selling vehicles in America, with over 245,000 units finding homes in the country in 2024. A new one starts at under $29,000, but for a lot less, you can pick up a used Rogue. This is where the importance of reliability records come in, as nobody wants a used vehicle that will spend more time in the shop than on the road. We've trawled through the available data to find the best Nissan Rogue for reliability. 0:01 / 0:09 Thinking about buying a Toyota RAV4? These 5 rivals might change your mind Watch More How We Found The Most Reliable Rogue We combed through Nissan Rogue complaints and recalls by model year to determine which model year is the least troublesome. Sources like J.D. Power, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Car Complaints, and RepairPal were consulted. The total number of complaints, as well as the severity of those complaints, have been considered. In this way, we place greater importance on one major issue than a series of smaller issues that can be considered annoying, but not necessarily detrimental to overall dependability. Rogue models from the 2021 model year and newer have been excluded, as these are still too new to get a clear picture of how reliable they'll be. Source: Nissan 2020 Is The Most Reliable Nissan Rogue Model Year The final second-gen Nissan Rogue was produced for the 2020 model year, and this model is our pick for the most reliable Rogue model year. On Car Complaints, it received just 15 complaints so far, whereas a number of earlier Rogue models have amassed over 100 complaints each. The 2020 model has only one recall to its name, regarding an ignition key that could collapse and shut off the vehicle while driving. While this can be hazardous, the simple solution proposed was for dealers to insert a spacer into the key slot of models with a jackknife key, free of charge. Further solidifying our choice is the 2020 Nissan Rogue's J.D Power quality and reliability rating of 83 out of 100, a significant improvement over the 2019 model's score of 78/100. Source: Nissan A Solid Engine, But CVT Requires Proper Maintenance The 2020 Rogue was the last one to be offered with a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine. The 2.5-liter mill produces only 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, so acceleration is not rapid. However, it's considered more reliable than the newer 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine equipped to newer Rogues. This 1.5L engine is already under investigation by the NHTSA, based on claims of engine failure/seizures and loss of power. Evidently, newer isn't always better. The 2.5L engine in the 2020 Rogue is quite efficient, returning 26/33/29 mpg city/highway combined with front-wheel drive, or 25/32/27 mpg with all-wheel drive. This comparatively simple engine is a big reason why the 2020 model is the best year for the Nissan Rogue. However, Nissan has persisted with a continuously variable transmission in the Rogue across all generations of the SUV. There were many complaints about the CVT in earlier Rogues, so much so that a class-action lawsuit was initiated, leading to Nissan extending its warranty on Rogues produced between the 2014 and 2018 model years. The 2020 Rogue seems less prone to CVT issues, which is just as well, since the average cost to replace a Nissan CVT transmission is between $3,500 and $8,000, according to Lemon Law Experts. Nissan Rogue Repair Costs CarEdge data indicates that the cost of maintenance and repairs for a Nissan Rogue over the first ten years of ownership will be $8,039, marginally below (by $169) the average for popular SUVs. Given that we're focusing on the 2020 model, you can expect to spend about $960 on annual repairs/maintenance in the crossover's sixth year, rising to $1,062 in the seventh year. How Much Is A 2020 Nissan Rogue Today? The major advantage to purchasing a 2020 Nissan Rogue, besides reliability, is how much you'll save compared to an all-new 2025 model. Kelley Blue Book indicates that the base S model has a fair purchase price of $14,977 today, which is $13,000 less than the original MSRP. Expect to pay around $16,000 for the mid-range SV and just under $18k for the range-topping SL. The SL adds amenities like a heated steering wheel, a Bose sound system, navigation, and an auto-dimming interior rearview mirror. Source: Nissan Other Reliable Rogue Model Years The Nissan Rogue doesn't have the same strong reliability reputation as the best-selling Toyota RAV4, but that doesn't mean there aren't other dependable Rogues to consider. In all cases, we advise to check that the CVT is operating smoothly, and that a proper maintenance schedule has been followed for the transmission, especially on older Rogues. 2019 Nissan Rogue One year older than the 2020 model, the 2019 Rogue has fewer overall complaints than the average Rogue. It does have two extra recalls, though: One involves a faulty backup camera and another is for engine harness damage that could result in a stall. In other respects, it appears to be roughly as reliable as the 2020 version. Final Thoughts Outside of the later second-generation Rogues, it's not easy to recommend many most reliable Nissan Rogue model years. Older Rogues have many CVT-related issues, while the third-gen model's more advanced three-cylinder engine is another potentially serious hurdle to reliable long-term ownership. If Nissan produced a manual Rogue or one with a conventional automatic, it would be an easier SUV to recommend. That's not the case, so we'd recommend sticking to low-mileage examples if you buy an older Rogue. FAQs Which is more reliable: The Honda CR-V or Nissan Rogue? Across all generations of these models, the CR-V has a superior reputation for longevity. What's a common problem on a Nissan Rogue? The CVT transmission, especially on earlier Rogues, is the most significant issue experienced by owners. What is the most reliable Nissan SUV? For ultimate durability, it's hard to beat the previous-gen, V8-powered Nissan Armada. However, the 2020 Nissan Rogue featured here is a reliable option at the more affordable end of the price spectrum. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Noel Gallagher's ‘excellent condition' 1990s super saloon up for sale for eye-watering seven-figure price

A BEEFY super saloon that once belonged to Noel Gallagher has recently hit the market - for a supersonic sum of £1.2million. A gorgeous Bentley Turbo R was listed on Auto Trader, having once been the pride of joy of the Don't Look Back in Anger singer. 3 3 3 The four-door saloon, which was first registered in 1997, was owned by Gallagher despite the fact he couldn't drive it. The Turbo R - with the 'R" standing for "roadholding" - boasts a 6.8-litre V8 engine and is good for 0-60mph under seven seconds, as well as a top speed of 143mph. Not only built for speed, the Bentley boasts all the trimmings you'd expect from a luxury set of wheels of its time - featuring a cream leather interior, complemented by a wood trim. Described as being in both "excellent condition" and "surprisingly reliable", the Turbo R has clocked some 100,000 miles in its 28-year life. The snazzy motor also has the number plate 'OASI6 2', in reference to the Britpop band, which is set to reunite to play a run of gigs this year in the UK and Ireland. This includes shows at Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, and Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, throughout July, August and September. The reunion made history, with more than 10million fans trying to get their hands on the British shows alone. Every performance, including those in the US, South America and Australia, sold out within minutes of going on sale. Famously, the Manchester-born musician has never passed his driving test - but seemingly hasn't stopped him owning or, indeed, driving cars. In 2023, he was handed six penalty points and ordered to pay a court £1,000 for failing to tell police who was driving his Range Rover - which was clocked speeding at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 in Edgware Road, West London. Speaking about the Bentley's sale, Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, said: 'Cars listed by music legends don't come around very often, and Noel Gallagher's Bentley Turbo R is certainly one for the Auto Trader history books." Auto Trader's Catherine King recently spoke to Sun Motors with advice on the best second-hand convertibles drivers can pick up at a pinch in time for the summer sun. Naturally, their picks included the evergreen Mazda MX-5 - dubbed the poster child for convertible cars.

Mazda's Revolutionary SKYACTIV-Z Engine Promises Unheard-Of Efficiency & Power

Mazda's SKYACTIV-Z tech could change the way automakers and drivers look at gas-powered engines amid today's significant EV investment push. Mazda isn't giving up on gas-powered engines Mazda's SKYACTIV-Z project has highlighted the automaker's desire to continue innovating gas-powered engines while other legacy manufacturers accelerate investments into electric powertrain development. As a result, Mazda is establishing a portfolio balancing internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, and all-electric models, adapting to market demand. Mazda's current SKYACTIV-Z initiative aims to create a gas-powered engine that can combust with leaner fuel mixtures, resulting in better fuel economy, lower emissions, heightened performance, greater reliability, and simplified maintenance. SKYACTIV-Z tech also converts heat normally escaping from an engine into power for improved thermal (engine) efficiency. Expert engineer Masahisa Yamakawa at Mazda said that heat insulation was the only unexplored area among the seven controlled factors that improve thermal efficiency. SKYACTIV-Z strives to offer high thermal efficiency at any RPM or speed range, achieving better fuel efficiency when an engine is running on its own while supplying greater synergistic benefits when combined with electric motors. These synergistic effects include even higher fuel economy, lower emissions, and enhanced driving performance. Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv Engine — Source: Mazda Carbon neutrality in an ICE vehicle? While carbon negativity is often linked with all-electric vehicles, Mazda is working toward carbon negativity with gas-powered engines. More specifically, the automaker is exploring SKYACTIV-Z's potential to be used with carbon-neutral fuels and testing carbon capture tech using a substance called zeolite in the exhaust pipe to absorb CO2. Combined, these two strategies could facilitate carbon neutrality in an ICE vehicle. Mazda is also working toward fulfilling the potential of internal combustion engines to release air with less CO2 than they take in, thus cleaning the environment. Michiharu Kawano, another leading ICE developer at Mazda, said: 'As things stand, it's unlikely that all cars will be replaced by battery EVs. Which is why I believe we were right to persevere with the internal combustion engine. Whether generating electricity with an engine to turn the wheels or using a motor to complement the engine's power, hybrid systems require an internal combustion engine. Even with electrification, with the exception of battery EVs, we'll still be considering solutions based on internal combustion engines. With highly efficient internal combustion engines, we can make motors smaller, which should also help control electrification costs.' Mazda Motors President Takashi Yamanouchi stands among the company's next-generation gasoline and diesel engines, SKYACTIVE-G — Source:If SKYACTIV-Z comes to fruition, it won't be the first time the public has experienced benefits from SKYACTIV tech. In 2010, the SKYACTIV-G debuted in the Mazda 2 and achieved a hybrid-level fuel efficiency of about 70 mpg based on the Japanese 10-15 test cycle using only internal combustion, without relying on motor assistance. Research efforts for the SKYACTIV-G began in 2005, and the tech's breakthrough followed Mazda's confirmation that compression ratio significantly impacts thermal efficiency. The seven control factors related to ideal combustion were thus identified as compression ratio, air-fuel ratio, combustion period, combustion timing, wall surface heat transfer, pumping loss, and mechanical loss. SKYACTIV tech made its debut in the Mazda2 Final thoughts Mazda's SKYACTIV-Z is a 2.5L inline 4-cylinder engine that is currently being tested and meets stringent European and North American emissions standards, while boasting strong performance. If actualized in production, SKYACTIV-Z will simultaneously elevate fuel efficiency and performance while keeping costs affordable. SKYACTIV-Z is scheduled to debut in the Mazda CX-5's next generation in 2027. About the Author Cody Carlson View Profile
