New York Mayor elections: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorses Zohran Mamdani

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorses Zohran Mamdani In a notable political development, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City provided her support to Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani's mayoral campaign on Thursday. This endorsement represents a significant effort to unite progressive voters against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's potential return. "Assembly Member Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack," Ocasio-Cortez said. "In the final stretch of the race, we need to get very real about that." With the June 24 Democratic primary approaching, Cuomo maintains his lead in polls, reminiscent of 2021's scenario when progressive disunity led to a moderate victory. Ocasio-Cortez, 35, selected Mamdani, 33, who shares similar characteristics: a Queens-based leftist representative who has gained substantial grassroots support through innovative policy proposals and effective social media presence. Mamdani's proposals include free city buses, rent stabilisation measures, and municipally operated grocery stores, funded through a £10 billion business and wealth tax. His stance on Israel has drawn attention from critics. Ocasio-Cortez emphasised the necessity of defeating Cuomo, whom she associates with wealthy interests. She announced her ranked-choice selections, placing Adrienne Adams second, Brad Lander third, followed by Scott Stringer and Zellnor Myrie. "Even if the entire left coalesced around any one candidate, an ideological coalition is still insufficient for us to win," Ocasio-Cortez said. "We have to have a true working-class coalition." While her endorsement carries weight among liberal groups, its impact remains uncertain. Mamdani has reached campaign fundraising limits and already secured substantial support from young, liberal voters. The Working Families Party's ranked choices largely align with Ocasio-Cortez's selections, suggesting some progressive unity. Upon receiving the endorsement after Wednesday's televised debate, Mamdani praised Ocasio-Cortez as a "once-in-a-generation leader." Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged challenges regarding Mamdani's experience and support among certain communities. Drawing from her own early political career, she expressed understanding of young leadership responsibilities while emphasising the need for appropriate expertise and support systems. Her endorsement decision may influence her political trajectory, as speculation continues about her potential presidential candidacy in 2028 or a possible Senate bid for Chuck Schumer's seat.

State-run GRSE inks ship building deals with German firm

New Delhi: State-run defence manufacturer Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has tied up with Germany's Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Rehder GmbH & Co. KG, for building four vessels, the ports, shipping and waterways ministry said on Thursday. The deal for building four 7,500-deadweight tonnage (DWT) vessels was signed in Oslo on 4 June in the presence of Union ports, shipping and waterways minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the statement said. These vessels will have hybrid propulsion and will be adhering to the latest cyber security norms. This is in addition to an existing order for eight such vessels currently being built at GRSE's Kolkata yard. GRSE also signed deals with UAE-based Aries Marine LLC for building offshore platforms and vessels. This move is expected to help modernize port facilities, improve multimodal logistics, and enable port-led industrial growth, said Sonowal. Another deal was signed between India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) group and Norway's DNV for collaboration in areas including shipbuilding, said the statement. Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said, 'As two proud maritime nations with extensive coastlines and rich oceanic traditions, we understand that the future of the blue economy hinges not just on development—but on sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth. It gives me immense pleasure that many Indian companies are signing MoUs including those from Norway, further deepening our commitment to collaborate in maritime sector.' Sonowal added, 'Our governments are also working closely on green shipping corridors, decarbonization efforts, ship recycling, and capacity building. The India-Norway Task Force on Blue Economy stands as a cornerstone of this deepening engagement.' Mint reported on 29 April that the expenditure finance committee had cleared a ₹ 25,000-crore Maritime Development Fund for FY26, a project to lend long-term, low-cost financial support for indigenous ship-building and other blue water infrastructure projects. On 5 June, GRSE shares opened at ₹ 3,399, up from the previous close of ₹ 3,358.50, and surged 4.80% to reach a record high of ₹ 3,520.

Mumbai Founder Criticises Employees Quitting After Payday, Internet Reacts

Kiran Shah, the founder of Mumbai-based startup GoZero, is facing backlash for his LinkedIn post criticising employees who resign shortly after receiving their salaries. In his post, Mr Shah shared he recently changed his company's pay date for employees from the 10th of every month to the 1st. However, he said some of his employees misused this policy and resigned the moment the salary was credited, and didn't show up to work the next day. "I used to give salaries on the 10th of the next month. A lot of startups I know do the same. Some even give on 15th of the next month. I realised this causes a lot of inconvenience to the team who has outgoings in the 1st week. From December 2023, I changed the salary payment date to 1st of every month," Mr Shah wrote on LinkedIn. "And while most of them are exceptionally loyal towards the mission, there are an unfortunate few who misuse this and resign the moment we credit the salary on 1st and don't show up to work the next day. This has happened yesterday, the 4th incident overall since I moved the salary processing from 10th to 1st," he continued. The entrepreneur assured that the incidents would not affect his decision to change the payday policy. "If i start penalizing the entire team for a couple of such dumb folks, then it puts a question mark on the culture I am building at GZ," he wrote. "However, to all the folks out there - don't ghost your employer once you get the salary. If you are not happy with the work or remuneration or boss or founder or colleagues or location or any damn thing, have a communication with your manager. Or even the founder - I am super approachable to anyone in the org. But do it in a professional way that doesn't burn bridges," he advised the employees. Mr Shah's post has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage among people. Several users labelled his post as "tone deaf". "Some companies somehow feel they do a favour if they disburse salary on 1st let's wake up and smell the coffee it's being done for ages now and in case of MNCs last working day of the month. Focus more on reasons why the employees are absconding and fix those," commented one user. "Receiving salaries on time is the right of every employee, most start ups these days are exploiting employees by expecting them to work extra hours in light of the "hustle culture" and still end up not receiving their salaries. Such startups need to have proper HR processes in place. The problem is much bigger than setting up a credit date," wrote another. "I am missing the connection here between the date of pay and not showing up the next day after receiving the salary. Changing pay date DOES NOT solve for not showing up the next day. It only gives you a leverage over the employees to not leave without serving notice period as the employees wouldn't get paid for the 10/15 days of the month, which in itself doesn't reflect a great culture. So you are right in not going back to the old pay cycle due to a few who are misusing it. I just dont understand the message you are trying to convey," said third user.
