Brewers send Quintana to IL with should impingement

Yahoo15-05-2025

When the Milwaukee Brewers signed veteran left-handed starter Jose Quintana in March, the hope was he would serve as a steadying presence in the back end of the rotation. Turns out, he had been much more through the first six weeks of the season.
Quintana, 36, in his 14th year of Major League Baseball had as good a start to the season as ever. He took a few weeks of extra time to warm up, so to speak, staying with the Brewers' Arizona Complex League team until Tax Day. When he arrived in Milwaukee, he was great, especially considering his age.

Quintana carried a 2.65 earned-run average alongside a 1.235 WHIP through six starts with the Brewers. That steadying presence proving even more necessary considering all the injuries Milwaukee had been dealt.
Now, Quintana is out, too.

The Brewers placed the Colombia native on the injured list Wednesday left should impingement. They recalled right-hander Tobias Myers to take his place. Myers himself began the year on the injured list before struggling upon return and being quickly sent down.
Quintana became the sixth Brewers starting pitcher to hit the IL since spring training began. Projected No. 2 Brandon Woodruff still hasn't made his debut. Veteran Aaron Civale made one start before hitting the shelf and newcomer Nestor Cortes made two. Myers missed time because of an oblique injury. And Aaron Ashby and DL Hall because of an oblique injury and a lat injury.

Milwaukee entered Wednesday with a record of 20-23, five games back of the National League Central leading Chicago Cubs.

Cubs Land Former MVP from Yankees in Trade Idea

Cubs Land Former MVP from Yankees in Trade Idea originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees could soon be facing a roster dilemma—and the Chicago Cubs might be in prime position to capitalize. Advertisement With slugger Giancarlo Stanton nearing a return and top prospect Ben Rice pushing for more playing time, the Yankees may not have room to keep Paul Goldschmidt in the everyday lineup. Goldschmidt, who signed to a one-year deal, has been a standout performer this season, and his value on the trade market may be the highest among first basemen. 'New York will not be able to get Rice, Stanton, and Goldschmidt in the same lineup on a regular basis," wrote Newsweek's Andrew Wright. "The trade of a player on a one-year deal rather than a young, promising player could be the correct move for the Yankees to make." If the Yankees decide to move him, the Cubs are a logical trade partner. The Cubs, currently leading the National League Central, are locked in a tight race with the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals. While their overall roster has held up well, first base remains a weakness. New York Yankees first base Paul Goldschmidt (48) looks on against the Pittsburgh Pirates at George M. Steinbrenner Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images Michael Busch has seen the bulk of the playing time at the position and is hitting .276 overall. However, his .148 average against left-handed pitching is a glaring issue. In 18 games at first base, Justin Turner has hit .250 against lefties but just .207 overall. Advertisement In Wright's eyes, that inconsistency makes Goldschmidt an ideal fit for the Cubs. Goldschmidt, a seven-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and former National League MVP, is thriving in New York. Through 220 at-bats, he is slashing .327 with six home runs and a .859 OPS. More importantly for Chicago, Goldschmidt has been devastating against left-handed pitchers, slashing .520/.613/.900 in 50 at-bats. With Busch struggling against southpaws and Turner offering minimal upside, Wright believes the Cubs would gladly take Goldschmidt's production against left-handers over Turner's. The Cubs are in a win-now window, and the NL Central remains tightly contested. Meanwhile, the Yankees have an incentive to move a productive veteran they may not be able to keep in the lineup long-term. Advertisement Goldschmidt's trade value is surging, and if the Yankees are willing to deal, the Cubs could find their first base solution and a possible difference-maker for a postseason run. How to watch Padres at Brewers series this weekend, as San Diego scraps for NL West lead

Two playoff hopefuls get into a three-game tangle Friday through Sunday, with the second-place San Diego Padres visiting the surging Milwaukee Brewers. Here's to a weekend of waddling Bratwursts and bright yellow slides. Milwaukee hits this weekend with the ninth-most runs per game, but it is 21st in batting average and 23rd in homers. But the Brew Crew is putting numbers on the board with elite base running and a solid walk rate. Speedy second baseman Brice Turang leads the lineup in WAR, and he's one of four Brewers with double-digit steals through the first third of 2025. The other three: Jackson Chourio, a prodigious five-tool Venezuelan, former MVP Christian Yelich and Gold Glove ascendant Sal Frelick. Advertisement Pat Murphy's team was 25-28 after a May 24 loss to Pittsburgh. Since then, Milwaukee enjoyed consecutive series sweeps, with back-to-back walkoffs versus Boston and a high-scoring statement-maker in Philadelphia. It took two of three against Cincinnati earlier this week. The Chicago Cubs still have a comfortable hold on the NL Central, but the Brewers are playing like a playoff team right now. San Diego is down to a simmer after its feverish start to the season, finishing May at 13-13 with a minus-14 run differential. The Pads beat rival San Francisco on Monday and Tuesday, but lost 6-5 on Wednesday and then 3-2 Thursday night. Still, they find themselves just two games back of the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres' stars are doing their respective things thus far. Fernando Tatís Jr. is on pace for another 30-HR, 30-SB campaign. Manny Machado is No. 10 in MLB batting average. And 22-year-old Jackson Merrill looks like the future of the franchise. He was ninth in NL MVP voting last year (as a rookie), and he's increased every part of his slash line (plus OPS) in 2025. Mike Shildt's squad is below league average in scoring and power numbers, but San Diego is winning on the hill with the eighth-best collective ERA. The Padres lead baseball with 10 shutouts in 61 games. Friday night starts with two right-handers, Randy Vásquez (3–4, 3.99 ERA) and Chad Patrick (3–4, 2.97 ERA). Saturday's national TV broadcast showcases RHP Stephen Kolek, who is 3-1 in his first six Padres starts, and Milwaukee LHP José Quintana, the 14-season veteran with a clean 4-1 record and a sub-3 ERA. San Diego will deploy righty Ryan Bergert to open Sunday's finale. He did four one-run bids to start the season, then put in a career-high five innings of work against the Giants on Tuesday. Bergert will be matched by fellow righty Aaron Civale, an attempted reclamation project for the Brewers. He's a paltry 15th percentile in fastball velocity and has been leaning on his cutter and sinker. Kansas City Royals (33-30) 18. Arizona Diamondbacks (31-31) 19. Cincinnati Reds (30-33) 20. Boston Red Sox (30-34) 21. Atlanta Braves (27-34) 22. Texas Rangers (29-34) 23. Washington Nationals (29-33) 24. Los Angles Angels (28-33) 25. Baltimore Orioles (25-36) 26. Miami Marlins (23-37) 27. Pittsburgh Pirates (23-40) 28. Chicago White Sox (20-43) 29. Athletics (24-40) 30. Colorado Rockies (12-50) Biggest Risers Milwaukee Brewers (+5) The Brewers went on an eight-game winning streak and have won nine of their last 10 games. They swept the Red Sox and Phillies before taking two of three from the Reds. They're one of baseball's hottest teams heading into the second week of June. Toronto Blue Jays (+3) The Blue Jays just aren't going away, having won eight of their last 10 games. They're suddenly tied with the Rays for the final AL Wild Card spot after sitting at or under .500 for most of May. Baltimore Orioles (+3) The AL East division is starting to look formidable again as the Orioles have now won six in a row with sweeps over the White Sox and Mariners. If the Orioles stay hot, their trade deadline plans could dramatically change. Biggest Fallers Seattle Mariners (-4) The Mariners have lost three of their last four series and are now 1.5 games back of the Astros in the AL West. On the bright side, Cal Raleigh is playing like an MVP, leading the entire league in home runs with 24 from the catcher spot. His OPS is an incredible 1.015; however, no one else on the team has an OPS above .800. Athletics (-4) The Athletics have been worse than the Rockies over the last month of play. They've won just two of their last 22 games — yes, it's been that bad.
