Chappell Roan Admits Backlash Gets to Her: 'It Makes Me Cry'
Chappell Roan is fierce all around, whether through her larger-than-life music, drag-inspired fashion, or how she publicly stands up for herself. While she has spoken her mind multiple times, the Grammy winner recently opened up about the constant criticism she receives and how it sits with her during a conversation with SZA for Interview magazine.
'I guess I wondered if you gave a fuck about the backlash,' the SOS singer asked, to which Chappell responded, 'I didn't, until people started hating me for me and not for my art.'
The 'Pink Pony Club' hitmaker, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, continued, 'When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make.' That's when it changed.'
She added that while people know her as her public, on-stage persona, they don't know who she really is deep down. 'But when things are taken out of context, people assume so much about you. I didn't realize I'd care so much. When it comes to my art, I'm like, 'Bitch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts,'' she shared. 'But when it comes to me and my personality, it's like, 'Damn. Am I the most insufferable bitch of our generation?''
SZA, who initially rose to fame in the 2010s because of her booming music career, shared a similar sentiment. Upon hearing Chappell's confession, the One of Them Days star revealed she 'felt relieved' that she 'gives a fuck' and reassured her that it's beautiful to feel deeply.
'I felt like I was a punk bitch for feeling the way that I feel, because I'm just like, 'Oh, maybe I'm just not cut out for this shit,'' SZA said, referencing her fame. 'Because everybody else who's cut out for this shit doesn't give a fuck. But that's not true.'
'The Giver' singer then said that reading backlash aimed at her sometimes brings her to tears. 'It makes me cry,' she admitted. 'I don't know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.'
Elsewhere in the interview, the stars chatted about believing in magic and gushed about their mutual admiration for each other. Earlier this year, SZA reacted to Chappell naming her as a dream collaboration on Call Her Daddy, saying, 'Actually didn't believe this quote when I saw it written til I saw it come out her mouth jus now CAUSE DEAD ASS SAME.'
She added, 'pls we must.' And with that, we will be (im)patiently waiting for an inevitable collab from these icons.

Genre-blenders Khruangbin may have transitioned from psych-tinged instrumental upstarts to an arena-ready trio with a bulging repertoire and a Grammy nomination to boot – but guitarist Mark Speer still leans on the trusty Stratocaster that has accompanied him from day one (i.e. the past two decades or so): an early 2000s reissue. 'If someone handed me their guitar I'd be like, 'Wow, what a nice instrument,' but I won't sound very good on it,' he tells 'I'm used to mine. I'm not a guitar player – I play that guitar. I've been using that one thing for the whole time. I know exactly where certain notes are going to sing more than others. 'Or if I play here versus here, I can really control the timbre of where things are happening and why – the volume knob, things that I do against the gain structure, it's all part of the voice. Really, it's my voice, right?' Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Speer's recently-announced signature model with Fender is a near-replica of what he plays on the daily – with a '70s Strat pickup sandwiched between DiMarzio Pro TrackTMs, jumbo frets, Graph Tech saddles and string trees, and a Custom 'C'-shape neck with a 7.25' radius – packaged in an Aged Natural finish. 'The guitar is very similar to my main one and that was the whole point,' he adds. 'It also feels the same way. The bit that routes the body out – it was a discontinued way they used to do it. They were very kind to bring that back. I think they just went and found the bit and put it back on the router to make it.' Speaking of signature models, his bandmate Laura Lee has also released her own – marking the first time Fender has simultaneously released a signature electric guitar and bass for two members of the same band.

Sofia Franklyn Compares Herself To Scooter Braun
Former Call Her Daddy host Sofia Franklyn just compared her departure from the podcast to one of the biggest music industry feuds, and it's a rather bold statement. Sofia hosted the Call Her Daddy podcast alongside her roommate, Alex Cooper, from 2018 to 2020. Today, Sofia is the host of her own hit podcast, Sofia with an F. In her new Hulu docuseries Call Her Alex, Alex explained that she and Sofia signed a three-year contract and a "70 grand" deal with Barstool Sports at the beginning of their podcast together. When the popularity of Call Her Daddy skyrocketed, the co-hosts renegotiated their pay in 2020. In the series, Alex said Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy told them, "If you stay at Barstool for one more year, you can own Call Her Daddy."According to the series, Sofia didn't want to take the new deal and decided to leave the podcast, to which Alex said, "I realized the 'Daddy Gang' was bigger than both of us," and believes she made the correct decision. Speaking of her dynamic with Sofia, Alex also said in the docuseries, "It was the classic, 'You think you see something online and people genuinely believe you're like sisters, but our relationship was so awful.'" On June 16, Sofia appeared on the Trading Secrets podcast with Bachelor alum Jason Tartick to explain her side of the exit from Call Her Daddy, and that's when she compared it to the drama between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun. Sofia has remained relatively quiet about her exit from the podcast. Now, she finally explained that she made this decision out of fear of "looking crazy" if she was honest about her fallout with Alex. However, she could relate to how people were "villainized" in the situation between Taylor and Scooter. In 2019, Scooter acquired Taylor Swift's catalog, which ignited a very public feud between the two, with Scooter receiving a lot of backlash. Taylor went on to re-record and release four studio albums. In May 2025, Taylor announced that she had finally bought back her music catalog. Sofia told Jason that Scooter is a dream podcast guest based on what he experienced during the feud over Taylor's masters. "When I saw the Taylor Swift stuff and looked into it, he looked like a horrible human being," Sofia said. "Then in hindsight, when I was really looking at the details, it's like, well ... he bought something legally ... He was so villainized." What makes Sofia's comparison a miss, in my opinion, is that Scooter and Taylor's feud goes beyond his purchase of the label Big Machine Records, which included Taylor's music, and the subsequent sale to another company. Scooter was Kanye West's (now Ye) manager during his 2016 beef with Taylor, and she has apparently considered him her nemesis for awhile. Their feud even resulted in Taylor being labeled a "snake" and blasted on social media. Scooter was even pictured in a screenshot from a FaceTime call with Ye and Justin Bieber with the caption: "Taylor swift what up." Scooter's proximity to Taylor's situation with Kanye over the release of his controversial song "Famous" and even the footage Kim Kardashian released later in an attempt to discredit the "Karma" singer, it's no surprise she wasn't a fan of her music catalog being even referenced that photo of Scooter, Justin, and Ye, claiming she received "incessant, manipulative bullying" from Scooter, like "when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it." Perhaps the split of the Call Her Daddy hosts was as toxic as the Taylor and Scooter drama that lasted over many years and involved several high-profile celebrities with the internet fandoms blowing it out of proportion — but I personally would never want to compare myself to that.
