50 iconic British cars reviewed to find the best but 1 was worthy winner

Daily Record09-05-2025

A panel of motoring experts have put together a list of what they believe to be the 50 best cars to have been built in the UK
A team of motoring experts has analysed fifty of the finest cars manufactured on UK shores to determine the nation's top British-built motor.
They examined iconic classics and modern masterpieces - from the shimmering history and fascinating present of British car manufacturing - before settling on an undisputed champion.

The contenders' list was studded, with iconic names such as Range Rover, Jaguar E-Type, McLaren F1, Ford Fiesta, Bentley Blower, as well as Nissan's Qashqai and Leaf, but there could only be one true automotive legend worthy of the crown.

In the end, the distinguished title was bestowed upon the MINI, honouring its classic Austin/Morris origins and its transformative reboot under BMW in the 2000s, securing its status as the Mini/MINI.
When BMW rebranded it to all-caps MINI as they revived this car classic at the turn of the millennium, it signified more than just a simple name shift; it represented the continuation of a tradition that began in the swining sixties, reports the Mirror.
The specialists at Auto Express pinpointed why they crowned the Mini/MINI as the pinnacle of British automobile craftsmanship – no other car quite encapsulates Britain's car manufacturing excellence like this global pioneer in compact vehicles.
They said: "We reckon no other British-built vehicle better represents the relevant, innovative, and pioneering UK automotive industry quite like the world's original small car."

They added: "There really can be little doubt – the Mini (not forgetting the modern-day MINI) truly is the best car this green and pleasant land has ever built. Long may it continue."

The mighty Mini emerged victorious, yet faced stiff opposition from other legendary UK-manufactured motors such as the Jaguar E-Type, which was the runner-up, and the Land Rover Defender clinched third spot in the rankings.
British motors dominated the rankings, but the list did include non-British car brands which are manufactured in the UK.
That allowed cars like Nissan's Qashqai and Leaf, alongside Ford's iconic GT and the popular Fiesta to be ranked.

On the motif of the GT, experts said: "Commissioned by Ford's US bosses to race under the Stars and Stripes flag and win the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race, the low slung GT40 racer was actually designed and built in the UK."
The list encompassed the breadth of British automotive achievement but led to musings on what it would look like if it only considered the last quarter of a century.

The past 25 years have seen Britain's auto industry ride a rollercoaster journey, with Brexit, the scale of the Covid pandemic repercussions, and the hits from several recessions, all tackling the resilience of British manufacturers.
Amid escalating pressure on the automotive sector and the uncertainty looming from Donald Trump's policies, the UK Government has been proactive, issuing a Research Briefing with strategies aimed at reinforcing employment within the automotive manufacturing sector.
In the briefing, the government said: "In Budget 2024, the government set out funding for certain sectors ahead of the industrial strategy's publication.
"This included confirmation of £2billion in funding to 'support the automotive sector, including the zero emissions vehicle manufacturing sector and supply chain, providing the long-term certainty that industry need to invest in advanced, greener technologies'.
"More recently, the government has also said that the industrial strategy will support the automotive industry, alongside actions that are already being taken."

Trent Alexander-Arnold's £130k car is 'banned' from Real Madrid training ground

Trent Alexander-Arnold will have to leave his stunning Range Rover at home as he joins up with the Real Madrid squad, with the defender instead having to pick a BMW to drive Trent Alexander-Arnold is effectively banned from driving his £130,000 Range Rover to Real Madrid 's training ground. The 26-year-old right-back officially became a Los Blancos player on Sunday, signing a six-year contract after leaving his boyhood club Liverpool as a free agent. The Premier League champions did receive an £8.4million fee for Alexander-Arnold, however, to release the defender early from his contract, as Real Madrid were keen for the player to join up with the squad in time for the Club World Cup later this month. ‌ But as the England international becomes acquainted with the rest of Xabi Alonso's players, he will have to say goodbye to the car model he's been driving around the UK. One of Alexander-Arnold's preferred vehicles to drive was a Range Rover P530. ‌ His luxury SUV featured a 4.4 V8 twin-turbo engine that delivered 530 horsepower and a maximum torque of 750 Nm. His version of the model, which is no longer for sale, was priced by Land Rover at £130,000. Combined with its eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system, it could propel its more than 2.5 tonnes from 0 to 100km/h in 2.6seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. But if the player had been hoping to fly the car over to Madrid or buy a similar model for everyday use in Spain, he would've been left bitterly disappointed. That's because Los Blancos' sponsorship agreement with BMW prevents the players from being able to drive any other car brand to training, reports Spanish outlet El Motor. Each year, the German car manufacturer provides the Real Madrid squad, as well as the women's team and basketball team, with cars to use throughout the season. The agreement only includes plug-in hybrid and electric models, with the cars later sold off by BMW as pre-owned models. Alexander-Arnold's potential disappointment is at least alleviated by the fact he will still be able to drive a high-performance SUV like the one he currently owns – for free. For instance, the sporty BMW XM has been one of the most popular choices within the club. ‌ Both Kylian Mbappe and Alexander Arnold's England team-mate Jude Bellingham have opted for that model, which has 653hp and costs around £152,000. Meanwhile, Vinícius Junior opted for the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which costs slightly more at £157,000. Alexander-Arnold has wasted no time in settling into his surroundings, having made his first public appearance as a Los Blancos player by attending the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. There, he met club legend Roberto Carlos, who he posed with for a photo. The Liverpool academy graduate also showed his excitement towards his new chapter by replying to Real's post celebrating new manager Alonso's arrival. He wrote 'El Jefe' – meaning 'the boss' – in Spanish.

Ireland's first American locomotive turns heads in transit as it arrives in new Co Down home

The two vehicles – the first of four in total – arrived at the Downpatrick and Co Down Railway (DCDR) museum on Sunday having turned the heads of many people as they were driven along the roads from Co Clare in the Republic. The trains which arrived were the former Irish Rail and CIE locomotives – numbers 124 and 190. The other two vehicles, the number 152 and A3R, will be arriving next weekend. The number 124 train represents a particularly special piece for the museum. First arriving on rails in 1961, it is Ireland's first American built locomotive. The CIE 121 class locomotives (No. 124) have been described as a 'game-changer' for Irish railways when they arrived in that decade. Built by General Motors in the USA, they were the first American locomotives to operate on the island of Ireland The 124 and 190 were brought over the border at the weekend, having been stored under tarpaulins at West Clare Railway since 2009. Originally, they were part of a broad and narrow-gauge railway museum project. However, due to issues with planning and logistics, this did not come to fruition and instead after over a year of planning and building to accommodate them, the historical pieces safety arrived at their new Co Down home. They were each serviced and inspected before being moved to their storage and restoration location. Welcoming the newest feature to their museum is the chair of the DCDR, Robert Gardiner. 'Having access to additional locomotives allows us to rotate our existing diesel locos for essential maintenance and cosmetic restoration without impacting our services as we continue our recovery,' he explained. 'Of the four locomotives being relocated from Moyasta, two will be restored and returned to operational service, while the other two will provide valuable spare parts to support the existing fleet. 'This is a proud day for our railway and the heritage community. 'The arrival of these locomotives, especially No. 124 - which was the very first American-built locomotive to arrive in Ireland in 1961 - significantly strengthens our collection and operational resilience.' Peter Jones of the Irish Traction Group commented on the condition of the historic vehicles. 'Although covered and secured, the locomotives have suffered from exposure to the sea air at Moyasta,' he said. News Catch Up - Monday 2nd June 'Fortunately, recent inspections revealed their internal mechanical and electrical components remain complete, and the engines still bar over. "At this point we would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Jackie Whelan, owner of the West Clare Railway, for allowing the group to store our locomotives at the site for the last fifteen years. 'And our thanks and gratitude to the Downpatrick and Co Down Railway for their kind offer of providing them with a new home.' The trains caused a stir on the roads form Lisburn to Saintfield during transit, as a DCDR apologised on social media for any delays caused to motorists while the vehicles were being transported. 'Were you stuck in a massive traffic jam on the road from Lisburn to Saintfield yesterday? Sorry, that was us. We had a rather large delivery arrive at the railway,' a spokesperson wrote on social media.
