With no upgradation plan, several small drug companies may shut operations

Time of India7 hours ago

New Delhi: Thousands of
pharmaceutical companies
in the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector face the grim prospect of closure, having passed the May-end deadline for submitting plans to the government for upgrading their manufacturing facilities.
Only a fraction of such units, 1,700 out of an estimated 6,000, have submitted plans for upgradation as per the newly-notified
Good Manufacturing Practices
(
GMP
), people in the know told ET.
Industry executives said they anticipate many units to shut down and thousands of job losses as these units struggle with high costs needed to make the necessary infrastructure improvements. The government, meanwhile, is likely to initiate site audits and kick-off regulatory action against those not complying with the new standards, the people said.

Experts noted that if the government takes stringent action, it may cause
drug shortages
in areas like cancer, where there are fewer manufacturing units.

"Next few months will see a lot of small sector units getting closed, resulting in increased unemployment. The upgradation requirement to Schedule M has created challenges for small and medium units potentially leading to closures and unemployment," said an industry executive, raising concerns about the future of these units.
Some executives believe that 'stop production notices' will be issued to units not complying with the newly-notified standards, which may inflate drug prices. "These units require hand holding by the government and if they do not get further support, then production will stop, resulting in escalation of drug prices," a second executive said.
Health ministry officials however stressed that sufficient time has been given to the industry for complying with the new norms.
Earlier the ministry had received several representations from pharma associations with annual revenues of less than '250 crore for extension of timeline for the implementation of revised Schedule M. Schedule M of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act outlines quality standards for pharma products.
To address their concerns, in February, the ministry issued another notification for extension of implementation of revised Schedule M whereby manufacturers with less than Rs 250 crore revenues were required to file an application to the
Central License Approving Authority
within three months, along with the plan of upgradation.

Google opens Asia Pacific (APAC's) first safety centre in Hyderabad; to tackle AI fraud, cybercrime; CM Revanth Reddy hails Telangana's tech rise

HYDERABAD: Tech giant Google unveiled its first safety engineering centre (GSEC) in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region and its fourth globally after Munich, Dublin, and Malaga (Spain), in Hyderabad on Wednesday. GSEC India is housed within what is Google's largest base outside the US and was also its first port of call in India in 2004. An official statement said GSEC India will not only address the rapidly evolving threat landscape of India, which faces projected cybercrime losses of up to Rs 20,000 crore by 2025, but will also serve as a global hub of safety innovation driven by a combination of AI-powered threat detection, ecosystem collaboration, and policy measures. Heather Adkins, vice president of engineering, Google Security, said GSEC India will serve as a global lighthouse for their digital safety and security efforts. She said Google has been investing in security and safety teams in Hyderabad over the years and will be looking at investing in hiring the best talent for the centre, which is learnt to have started with around 200-250 engineers. Pivotal moment in T's journey as cybersecurity hub: Revanth The centre will primarily focus on keeping end users safe from online fraud and scams, strengthening cybersecurity for govt and enterprise infrastructure, and building artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025년 가장 여유 넘치는 농장 게임. 설치 없음 Taonga: 아일랜드 팜 플레이하기 Undo It will deploy advanced AI and large language models (LLMs) to power real-time scam alerts on Android, strengthen Google Play Protect, and enhance fraud detection. GSEC India will also tackle AI-driven deception through adversarial testing, AI-assisted red teaming, and tools like SynthID to watermark AI-generated content while focusing on ecosystem collaboration and intelligence sharing through platforms like the Global Signals Exchange (GSE). It will also advance research in areas like Post-Quantum Cryptography through partnerships with academia. Flagging off the facility, chief minister A Revanth Reddy said the first-of-its-kind centre in the Asia-Pacific marks a pivotal moment in Telangana's journey as a global cybersecurity innovation hub. "Google and Hyderabad are old friends... Google today has nearly 7,000 Googlers who call Hyderabad their home," he said, pointing out that the new centre affirms Hyderabad's crucial role in developing privacy, safety, and cyber-defence solutions and will attract top-tier safety engineering talent to the state. He said the Telangana govt was focused on growing to a $1 trillion economy by 2035 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047. "Our population is 2.5% of India's population but contributes 5% to its GDP. By 2047 we want to contribute 10% to India's GDP." IT and industries minister D Sridhar Babu said GSEC India demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in building a secure digital infrastructure and will serve as a catalyst for innovation in areas critical to India's vision of becoming a global tech leader.

IST to be mandatory time reference, govt asks banks, Sebi to discontinue using other systems

Denny generated AI Image NEW DELHI: Ahead of making the use of Indian Standard Time (IST) as the mandatory time reference for all legal, commercial, digital and administrative activities, the govt on Wednesday asked industry, stock exchanges, Sebi, banks and those dealing with critical infrastructure to discontinue use of alternative systems such as GPS. Consumer affairs ministry Pralhad Joshi told reporters that his ministry will soon come out with rules making IST mandatory, which is the 'official and legal time of India'. This will secure India against cybersecurity vulnerabilities such as spoofing and jamming. The armed forces have been largely using IST with the time reference also used in Operation Sindoor, an official said. He added that GPS signals were denied to India during the Kargil War and also during the Mumbai terror attacks, in which terrorists were using satellite phones and the Intelligence Bureau had no information on how they were connected to foreign locations. 'Time keeping in the country is still dependent on a foreign satellite like GPS and we want to move away from GPS. Timekeeper National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has an accurate time scale, which is of the order of a few nanoseconds with respect to the world time,' said senior NPL official Ashish Agrawal. The consumer affairs department, Isro and NPL have developed an indigenous timekeeping system, which includes five atomic clocks at different locations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The initiative aims at delivering IST with millisecond to microsecond accuracy through five Regional Reference Standard Laboratories (RRSLs) equipped with the atomic clocks. Consumer affairs secretary Nidhi Khare said, 'So far, we were dependent on external sources for time dissemination. We have Indianised the entire ecosystem of time and the department is now ready with the dissemination process.' This initiative will translate into more secure digital transactions, accurate billing in utilities, reduced cybercrime risks and synchronised timekeeping in transportation and communication. At present, several systems rely on foreign sources of time.
