
What's the difference between racing Indy 500 and Daytona 500? Drivers explain
They are the signature spectacles in each racing series, the Indianapolis 500 and all its pageantry with more than a century of tradition and milk drinking in open-wheel racing, and the Daytona 500, NASCAR's season-opener run under the Florida sun at the unofficial home of the "birthplace of speed."

Just say the city names to even casual sports fans, and they'll surely know each of them as two of the biggest dates — for sure, two of the biggest parties — in American racing.
They are united by four wheels, 500 miles on a 2.5-mile track, and raucous crowds of 100,000-plus fans that spill into Indy's Snake Pit and Daytona's Tent City.
And, well, not much else.
"They're two completely different concepts of racing and I think people don't really understand the differences," said Juan Pablo Montoya, a two-time Indy 500 champion with seven starts in the Daytona 500.
Montoya is one of the handful of elite drivers to attempt racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. This year's Daytona 500 field is dotted with drivers who have tried both, including seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, AJ Allmendinger, Kyle Larson and even a Daytona 500 rookie in four-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves.
While a longshot, the Brazilian star is attempting to match A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti as the only drivers to win the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500.

Castroneves will have some help in the draft — the tricky mix of downforce and drag — from three other teammates at Trackhouse Racing.
"I think the main difference is, they're both unique to survive," Montoya said. "The factor with NASCAR that makes it really difficult is that you not only depend on yourself to win the race, you depend on your teammates pushing you, your friends. Having the teammates close to you at the right time makes a bigger difference than anything else."
Here's what some of this year's drivers who steeled their nerves over 500 miles in both races have to say about the challenges of them both — and how Castroneves might fare in Sunday's race. Jimmie Johnson
"The race itself and the ways the cars behave in the draft are so different. I'm very curious to see what Helio thinks as he gets more experience on the track. In IndyCar, the tow is just mind-blowing how much it helps cars pick up speed. A tow in the stock car is minimal. All the energy comes from behind the push. Really just different dynamics."
Johnson is a two-time Daytona 500 winner and the 2022 rookie of the year at the Indianapolis 500.
On the crowd:
"Both atmospheres are really good, for sure. I don't know. They're still, like, very different. Like, it's hard to answer that because they're both the peak of the sport. They just have their differences.
"The infield at Indy has the Snake Pit, but the infield here has all the campers, and that's really cool. Driver intros [are] sort of similar. The crowd feels closer to you at Indy, at least the grandstand crowd. The frontstretch at Indy is swarmed with people. But pit road is also similar to that here. But it's more race fans. I don't know. I feel like maybe Indy just has like a little bit more of the kind of history feel to it than the 500, Daytona 500. Other than that, I mean, they're both great. The atmospheres at both of them were great."

On the cars:
"I think the challenging part potentially is just probably the weaker brakes. You don't slow down as good as you would in IndyCar for like a green-flag pit cycle. Maximizing time for the green-flag ins-and-outs, that's where it's going to be probably a challenge. Too, at Indy, it's so narrow, y'all just follow each other. Here it's like you're trying to pass people, braking and stuff. That's probably where he'll get a little bit maybe overwhelmed at times. But he'll get the hang of it. It's not a big deal. He'll be fine."
Larson is NASCAR's 2021 Cup Series champion, competed in the Indy 500 last year and will return this May.
On the cars:
"Where do you start, I guess? I think when it comes to the Daytona 500, just that pack racing, right? You're constantly side-by-side. The Indy 500, the year I ran it, the way the aero was, you make big runs and stuff, but you're not side-by-side constantly. I think that to me is the bigger difference of the way you race those races. You have to be pinpoint accurate in either car. The consequences are really high in both cars if you make a mistake. I think the stress of not having to be side-by-side at the Indy 500 constantly is a little bit easier. But you're also running 50 miles-per-hour quicker."
On the crowd:
"We all love motorsports. There [are] a handful of races you can say to somebody that's not a motorsports person and they know exactly what it is. These two races, you could argue the four biggest races in the world. You could put up Monaco, you could put up Le Mans, maybe. The energy of this race as you build up to it and as you walk out, and they announce you, at least for me, it's the same emotion for sure."
Allmendinger finished third in the 2009 and 2017 Daytona 500s, and was seventh in the 2013 Indy 500 and leading until he was forced to pit because his seat belt became undone.

After Copa América chaos, will Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup be safe? Inside the security challenge
The panicked wails cut through suffocating heat, and told of terror. They came from distressed soccer fans last July 14, and became the soundtrack to 'inhumane' chaos. Mothers and daughters, fathers and friends, hinchas of Colombia and Argentina went to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami for the 2024 Copa América final. Some left traumatized after ticketless fans and security failures turned their evening of celebration into a nightmare. They spent unending minutes crushed together, sweating and suffering, pushing helplessly toward previously breached and resealed gates. Some fainted. Some shrieked for help — for water that wasn't available, for calm that never really came. They 'posed an emergency situation due to the heightened risk of stampedes and potential injury,' a Miami-Dade County police chief later wrote. Authorities ultimately unsealed gates 'to alleviate' the crush, 'therefore avoiding fatal injuries,' but allowing thousands without tickets to enter. Advertisement The entire scene spooked American soccer. It led to finger-pointing and fears that the next major international tournaments on U.S. soil — the 2026 World Cup and 2025 Club World Cup, which kicks off Saturday in Miami — could be similarly unsafe. It stunned New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who, the morning after the madness, called a meeting. 'Let's review all protocols,' Murphy told a team that included leaders from MetLife Stadium, which is set to host the Club World Cup and World Cup finals. 'And let's make sure it never happens [here].' That, for the past 11 months, has been a consistent theme of preparations for the two upcoming tournaments. 'I haven't been in a meeting since we've started this collaboration with FIFA and local, state, federal law enforcement,' says JP Hayslip, the VP of security at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, where 'that hasn't [been] brought up.' Advertisement Nearly a year later, authorities say they've learned from the Copa América final. In interviews with Yahoo Sports, stadium officials and others expressed confidence in their planning. A few noted that FIFA, the global soccer governing body in charge, has come to the U.S. more prepared than CONMEBOL, the South American governing body that ran last year's Copa. 'There's definitely a more organized feel' this time around, one person familiar with the prep for both tournaments said. But there are still concerns. Many stem from FIFA's unfamiliarity with the U.S.; and from U.S. authorities' unfamiliarity with international soccer, one of the widely cited factors in last summer's trouble. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) Lessons learned from Copa América final In one sense, to security experts, the near-fatal flaw that derailed the Copa final was obvious. Fans and cars 'entered the interior parking lots without prior screening,' Carmen Castro, chief of the Miami-Dade Police Department's Strategic Response Division, wrote in an after-action report obtained by Yahoo Sports. The lack of an outer security perimeter allowed un-ticketed fans 'an opportunity to gain access to the stadium,' Castro explained. And in 'overwhelming numbers,' they ruined the experience for thousands with tickets. Advertisement Hard Rock Stadium officials, citing pending litigation, declined to discuss why there was no outer perimeter. In a forward-looking statement, though, a spokeswoman wrote: 'For FIFA Club World Cup 2025, fans should expect to pass through multiple security and ticket check points in order to enter Hard Rock Stadium. All fans will also have their tickets scanned as they enter the property.' A spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office added that there would be 'three separate checkpoints that enclose the entire campus.' This layered approach, experts say, disperses crowds both spatially and sequentially. Most problems are detected at initial 'soft checks' long before a fan reaches stadium gates, far away from what FIFA's guidelines call the 'final formal ticket check.' Those who do sneak or bust through can be tracked down in the vast open space between outer perimeter and concourse, without wreaking widespread havoc. 'This approach will ensure the great majority of nefarious non-ticketed fans remain on the exterior,' Castro wrote. For the Club World Cup, most stadiums outside Miami actually won't extend their perimeters far beyond what they typically do for NFL or MLS games, according to multiple officials at those host venues. That is because they aren't expecting capacity crowds; interest in the Club World Cup, dampened by 'alarming' ticket prices, has been lukewarm in most markets. But for next summer's 2026 World Cup, there will be secondary and tertiary perimeters. Although exact plans are still in development, Super Bowl-style structures will surround the stadiums. They're extended in part to accommodate media centers, hospitality areas and sponsor activations, but also to fortify security. Streets and parking lots will be blocked off. 'We don't want somebody that doesn't have a ticket to even get close to our building,' Hayslip says. Advertisement Perimeters, though, are only part of the answer, a superficial solution. Deeper dynamics — the lack of stateside precedent, and the lack of institutional experience with mega soccer tournaments — is 'what is breeding the uncertainty,' one official involved in both preparations said. 'What happened at Copa, yeah, you can point to what the issue was: they needed an outer perimeter. … But it's more complicated than that.' The other four have held a combined 21 NFL conference championships. They've all hosted Taylor Swift and dozens of other attractive events — all of which have contributed to two corollary challenges. Advertisement On one hand, 'there is a risk' that experience can breed 'complacency,' says Mick O'Connell, a security consultant who's worked on megaevents; that 'muscle memory' could blind authorities to the unique characteristics of a World Cup and the 'changed environment they're gonna be operating in.' On the other hand, multiple people told Yahoo Sports that there's been mild friction between stadium officials and FIFA, which is more accustomed to operating men's World Cups on relatively blank slates, in venues without pre-existing security staffs and systems, venues that were purpose-built for the tournament. 'It's clearly been a challenge for them,' Hayslip says. 'It's blatantly obvious that they're not used to this. They always revert back to Qatar' and the 2022 World Cup, whereas the U.S. stadiums revert back to Super Bowls and so on. Meshing those two perspectives into one unified strategy has not been seamless. Experience, of course, is primarily an asset. 'You've got institutional knowledge of what works and what doesn't work,' says Joe Coomer, the VP of security at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. O'Connell clarifies: "It's good to have muscle memory with regard to systems, procedures and practices that you can rely upon." Hayslip says that he and colleagues have tried 'to reassure [FIFA] that not only do we 'know what we're doing,' we've experienced it.' Advertisement But they have also listened. They have traveled to England and Germany, to Euro and Champions League finals, to see how those with decades of experience in international soccer do it. Because they know that World Cups are different. 'We've done the NFC championship many times, but this is not that,' Hayslip assures. 'This is a different environment, a different culture, … a different, probably more passionate fan base than any of us have ever experienced.' For those who've never hosted high-level international soccer, Coomer has a two-word message: 'Buckle up!' In workshops and on scouting trips, they've learned how fans from various countries express that passion. 'We've all got our eyes on those Argentinian teams, those Brazilian teams,' Coomer says. They've studied videos and brought in foreign experts — less to crack down on the passion, more to ensure they don't misinterpret it as aggression or troublemaking. Coomer and a few Atlanta law enforcement leaders went to Los Angeles for last month's Club World Cup play-in game, where they encountered festive smoke and constant chanting. If they encounter it in Atlanta this month, or next summer, Coomer explains, 'we don't want it to be the first time [officers] react to it.' Advertisement What they also must understand, experts add, is how visitors might react to American policing. 'You're not policing your own citizens anymore,' says Cliff Stott, an expert in crowd psychology. 'You're policing foreign nationals [who] have different culture norms, different values, different relationships with the police.' They may or may not respond well to K-9s. They may or may not be comfortable chatting with an officer — who may or may not speak their language. Communicating with those foreign fans will be crucial, experts say, especially as they hop from one U.S. city to the next, where tactics and rules might be distinct. Miscommunications can lead to confrontations, which can lead to chaos, which is precisely what all these security measures are designed to prevent. Experts also warn against over-policing, which can backfire or take the fun out of the event. Officials hope improved protocols will deliver a safe, enjoyable environment for fans traveling from around the world. (Photo by Roger Wimmer/) (Roger Wimmer/ISI Photos via Getty Images) 'It's a classic all-threat, all-hazard situation' For the 2026 World Cup, within and beyond the 16 host cities, there will also be a vast but unseen network of federal, local and international agencies gathering intel and responding to it. Advertisement This was another takeaway from the Copa América final. Despite massive gatherings outside team hotels; brawls in Charlotte at a semifinal earlier that week; and reports of difficulties in Texas at previous matches, the possibility of gate-crashing 'was not gathered and shared by any intelligence source,' Castro wrote in the after-action report. 'Had this information been known, our plan would have been modified for this contingency.' In 2026, information must flow throughout a messy web of police departments, sheriff's offices, FIFA, security companies and other private entities. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will also be heavily involved. The World Cup final and other spotlighted games have been designated SEAR 1 events, meaning they're of 'national and/or international importance' and 'require extensive federal interagency support.' The rest will be SEAR 2 events, the second-highest rating. Mexico and Canada, the World Cup's co-hosts, will each have their own nodes as well in what O'Connell calls 'a spider's web' of command centers. All involved will prepare extensively. 'It's a classic all-threat, all-hazard situation,' O'Connell says. They'll prepare for terrorism and gun violence, for cyber attacks and weather, for drunkenness and medical crises. Nowadays, with the Club World Cup near, they are in daily meetings, adapting and planning. When I interviewed Coomer, his team and FIFA's had just completed an hourslong tabletop exercise. When I interviewed Hayslip, he and Philadelphia were prepping for a 'full-scale exercise,' a test of emergency preparedness initiated by DHS with a view toward 2026. FIFA did not make its security chiefs available for interviews. But among organizers, generally, there is confidence that the Club World Cup will pass without major incident. In Miami, where it kicks off Saturday with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami against Al Ahly, security budgets have increased compared to last summer. And 'there will be a significant law enforcement and security footprint in and around the stadium,' the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office spokeswoman wrote, 'to ensure public safety.'

With the NCAA landscape changing, can small schools thrive in college athletics without the big bucks?
ORLANDO, Fla. — As schools prepare to begin sharing millions with their athletes, there is no avoiding the reality that if you're not a Power Four school, you're at a disadvantage. With major conferences running the show, St. Bonaventure and Florida International don't even have a seat at the table. FIU and St. Bonaventure aren't necessarily worried about a head-to-head fight over top players with deeper-pocketed schools. The priority has become survival and finding a balance between athletics ambition and financial sustainability. Adrian Wojnarowski spoke candidly about the challenges he faced during his inaugural season as the general manager of the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team. Solidifying a recruiting class that would improve the team and embrace the school culture was not easy. After July 1, when lucrative paychecks will pretty much become mandatory for blue-chip prospects, it's not going to get any easier. With some 2,000 undergraduate students, the Bonnies are outnumbered in resources and revenue when competing even against other Atlantic 10 teams like VCU, Dayton, and Saint Louis. Wojnarowski, ESPN's former lead NBA reporter, thinks he has identified a formula for locating the ideal prospect. To him, St. Bonaventure is a landing spot for international players adjusting to a new culture and college life, transfers who may have fallen short at a high major and need development, or those looking to move up to a mid-major. He admits the school in upstate New York could be a pit stop on a player's journey. 'I want them to see that our environment, our coaching staff, our small school, especially for international players coming over, what I really try to sell is your adjustment to American college life,' he said at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and Affiliates Convention this week. 'I think for a lot of kids, it's easier in a school with 1,900 students than a school with 19,000. And you'll come to have two great years with us, and then you'll probably end up at schools with 19,000 or 29,000,' he said. 'And so you're selling, for us, we're your first step on the way to somewhere else, or the other one to me is we're the place to come when you've got to get the basketball right.' Female athletes appeal landmark NCAA settlement, saying it violates federal antidiscrimination lawIf the plan goes awry and a recruit slips away, one thing the former NBA insider refuses to do is blame the money. 'Fundraising is hard, creating new revenue streams is hard, but the one thing that I try to stay away from with us is not saying, 'Oh, we didn't get him because they offered more money,' and using that as a crutch all the time. I really examine when we lost a player,' Wojnarowski said. 'Are we being honest with ourselves in saying that we did everything outside the economics to make our case to this person?' FIU has more than 40,000 undergraduates, but the athletic department is using a similar philosophy, pinpointing advantages and opportunities to come from the settlement instead of the negatives. Similar to St. Bonaventure, FIU doesn't expect to come close to the $20.5 million revenue-sharing cap available over the next year. For a competitive edge, unlocking new revenue streams is fundamental. 'To compete, from a revenue standpoint, you have to think outside the box of your conventional fundraising and targeting donors,' senior associate athletic director Joseph Corey said. 'That's why you're looking at concerts being held at different venues, different festivals to generate extra revenue to bring in, different revenue streams, and not just fundraising going after the same donors. You've got to go beyond that in order to be able to compete.' Being based in Miami has its perks. Proximity to celebrities is one of them. In August, FIU secured a 10-year partnership with Pitbull, the singer and rapper who coins himself 'Mr. 305.' 'We did the partnership with Pitbull – Pitbull Stadium. He's on tour, but part of the deal was that he would be collaborating with us and doing events for us from a fundraising standpoint,' Corey said. 'You've got to think outside the box. Especially in a city like Miami, it's about the experience too.' Schools unlocking creative revenue streams is something that can be expected. FIU competes in Conference USA alongside teams like Liberty, Louisiana Tech, UTEP, Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State. The football team went 3-5 in 2024, finishing sixth in the conference. The men's basketball team finished last with a 3-15 conference record. It's hard to sell donors on losing teams. 'Let's call it what it is, FIU's not going to be able to keep up with the Alabamas of the world, the Georgias, Michigan, or Texas, but what can we do? We can be the best in our conference. That is our goal,' Corey said. 'Let's be the best in our conference and really compete there because once you're at the top of your conference, that means more revenue in other areas. Everyone wants to donate to a winner.'

Trump is expected to sign a measure blocking California's vehicle emissions rules
WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump is expected to sign a measure Thursday that blocks California's first-in-the-nation rule banning the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035, a White House official told The Associated Press. The resolution Trump plans to sign, which Congress approved last month, aims to quash the country's most aggressive attempt to phase out gas-powered cars. He also plans to approve measures to overturn state policies curbing tailpipe emissions in certain vehicles and smog-forming nitrogen oxide pollution from trucks. The timing of the signing was confirmed Wednesday by a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity to share plans not yet public. The development comes as the Republican president is mired in a clash with California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, over Trump's move to deploy troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests. It's the latest in an ongoing battle between the Trump administration and heavily Democratic California over everything from tariffs to the rights of LGBTQ+ youth and funding for electric vehicle chargers. 'If it's a day ending in Y, it's another day of Trump's war on California,' Newsom spokesperson Daniel Villaseñor said in an email. "We're fighting back." According to the White House official, Trump is expected to sign resolutions that block California's rule phasing out gas-powered cars and ending the sale of new ones by 2035. He will also kill rules that phase out the sale of medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and cut tailpipe emissions from trucks. The president is scheduled to sign the measures and make remarks during an event at the White House on Thursday morning. Newsom, who is considered a likely 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, and California officials contend that what the federal government is doing is illegal and said the state plans to sue. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin are expected to attend, along with members of Congress and representatives from the energy, trucking and gas station industries. The signings come as Trump has pledged to revive American auto manufacturing and boost oil and gas drilling. The move will also come a day after the Environmental Protection Agency proposed repealing rules that limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants fueled by coal and natural gas. Zeldin said it would remove billions of dollars in costs for industry and help 'unleash' American energy. California, which has some of the nation's worst air pollution, has been able to seek waivers for decades from the EPA, allowing it to adopt stricter emissions standards than the federal government. In his first term, Trump revoked California's ability to enforce its standards, but President Joe Biden reinstated it in 2022. Trump has not yet sought to revoke it again. Republicans have long criticized those waivers and earlier this year opted to use the Congressional Review Act, a law aimed at improving congressional oversight of actions by federal agencies, to try to block the rules. That's despite a finding from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog, that California's standards cannot legally be blocked using the Congressional Review Act. The Senate parliamentarian agreed with that finding. California, which makes up roughly 11% of the U.S. car market, has significant power to sway trends in the auto industry. About a dozen states signed on to adopt California's rule phasing out the sale of new gas-powered cars. The National Automobile Dealers Association supported the federal government's move to block California's ban on gas-powered cars, saying Congress should decide on such a national issue, not the state. The American Trucking Associations said the rules were not feasible and celebrated Congress' move to block them. Chris Spear, the CEO of the American Trucking Associations, said in a statement Wednesday: 'This is not the United States of California.' It was also applauded by Detroit automaker General Motors, which said it will 'help align emissions standards with today's market realities.' 'We have long advocated for one national standard that will allow us to stay competitive, continue to invest in U.S. innovation, and offer customer choice across the broadest lineup of gas-powered and electric vehicles,' the company said in a statement. Dan Becker with the Center for Biological Diversity, in anticipation of the president signing the measures, said earlier Thursday that the move would be 'Trump's latest betrayal of democracy.' 'Signing this bill is a flagrant abuse of the law to reward Big Oil and Big Auto corporations at the expense of everyday people's health and their wallets,' Becker said in a statement.
