UK's oldest WW2 veteran awarded Freedom of Erewash
The UK's oldest surviving World War Two veteran has been awarded the Freedom of Erewash.Donald Rose, who is also the UK's oldest man aged 110, was honoured by Erewash's youngest ever mayor, 25-year-old Harry Atkinson, at a ceremony at his care home in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.Atkinson said it was a "privilege" to present the award to the veteran.Receiving the award, Mr Rose said it was "great" and "very nice to see all the people" at the small event.
"I want to say thank you very much for coming to see me," he said."I didn't do anything that anybody else wouldn't have done."
His son, David Rose, said he was proud of his dad, adding: "Bearing in mind what he's been through, it's quite something, and he's still here to tell the tale."You start telling [his] story and you get a lump in your throat. All I can say is I'm extremely proud of the man."Thank you to the council, greatly appreciated, and he deserves it.He also praised the work of the British Legion for supporting veterans like his father. Paul Scott, John Sewell and Paul Jarvis from the Ilkeston and Long Eaton branches of the Legion attended the ceremony.Harry Atkinson said veterans like Donald "need recognising". "We've had a generation of people that served in WW2," he said. "Some gave the ultimate sacrifice. "This is in recognition of not just Donald but to them as well. They allowed us the freedoms that we have today."If anything, it's a shame that it's taken us this long. 110 is a bit too long I think!"
The leader of the council James Dawson said it was a unanimous decision of the authority to award Donald the freedom of the borough."It's the highest honour that any local authority can bestow," he said."It is in recognition of Donald and his service, but also [a] special things in this 80th year of VE day and VJ day."People who took part, people like Donald, we have to treasure the time we have with them."Mr Rose was born in Westcott in Surrey on 24 December 1914.He joined the Queen's Royal Regiment at the age of 25 and went on to train as a sniper. He served in North Africa and Europe and puts his longevity down to salty water he had to drink during his time as a Desert Rat.Mr Rose, who turned 110 last December, enjoyed a wartime-themed party at the care home where he lives in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, for VE day anniversary celebrations earlier this month.

Amanda Holden poses with 'BFF' Kylie Minogue backstage after her Tension Tour at London's O2
posed backstage with her 'BFF' Kylie Minogue following her Tension Tour at London's O2 on Monday. Amanda looked happier than ever dancing and singing at the concert as she was joined by her BGT co-judge Bruno Tonioli and her BBC co-star Alan Carr. The radio host, 54, supported the Australian singer, 57, at her sensational gig and surprised her with her very own bottle of champagne. The Spinning Around hitmaker launched Kylie Minogue Wines in 2020 on her 52nd birthday, with the brand having now sold over 20 million bottles globally. She first released a southern French rosé made from a blend of 80 per cent Carignan and 20 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon from the southern French coast. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In an exclusive interview with The Drinks Business, Kylie revealed that drinking Provence rosé during sweltering nights in Nashville while recording her 14th album, Golden, is what inspired her to want to make her own. She told the publication: 'It was exceptionally hot and humid that summer, and it was an exciting time, being in Nashville and writing songs with no distractions.' 'While dining outdoors one night, my manager Polly and I were drinking Whispering Angel to cool down from the heat, which got me thinking how great it would be to have my own rosé.' 'I love pale pink rosés and all the associations of the Mediterranean that go with them.' Keen to be involved in all stages of the production process, Kylie chose the wine's long-necked, bell-shaped bottle finished with a pearlescent capsule. She also designed the label featuring her name repeated in relief and her signature in black in the centre. Amanda previously said Kylie is one of her 'BFFs' and that the pop princess called her when she was filming her scenes for her Neighbours debut in 2022. The actress played aunt to Jason Donovan's real-life daughter Jemma, who plays Harlow Robinson. Speaking to The Mirror at the time, she revealed that Kylie rang her up to give her some support on set. She told the publication: 'Kylie rang me while I was on set to say, "Hi, what's it like? How's it going?"' 'She knew I was filming, that's why she called. I love her so much. We call each other BFFs.' The pair were first introduced by celebrity make-up artist Christian Vermaak and have been firm friends ever since, regularly snapped together at glamorous parties. Kylie herself starred on Neighbours as Charlene Robinson, who went on to marry Scott Robinson, played by Jason Donovan. She left the show in 1988 in order to focus on her music career, with her character moving to Brisbane.
