ENG vs WI: England players arrive on cycles; WI team bus delayed due to London traffic

India Today2 days ago

The start of the third One-Day International between England and the West Indies at The Oval was delayed on Tuesday due to an unexpected traffic jam that held up the visiting team's arrival. On the other hand, some England players rode Lime rental bikes to the venue, navigating the congested London streets on two wheels. While England entered the final ODI with a 2–0 lead and the chance to complete a clean sweep, the build-up to the match took an unusual turn. With the West Indies team stuck north of the river in heavy traffic, several England squad members took matters into their own hands — or rather, onto their handlebars—pedaling to the ground to avoid similar delays.Arriving at the ground in styleOnly one way to beat the road closures in London pic.twitter.com/2xrSPypnQD— England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 3, 2025advertisementThe England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released a statement ahead of the toss: 'Due to a delayed arrival of one of the playing teams, who are stuck in heavy traffic north of the river, the scheduled start of play will be delayed. Once all members of the playing teams arrive, the match officials will coordinate updated timings and discuss any impact on the schedule of play. We will update spectators with the schedule of play as soon as we are able to.'
The delay meant West Indies could not warm up or train in the nets before the toss. They confirmed their late arrival on X (formerly Twitter), posting:'Due to heavy traffic delays, our team arrived moments before the previously scheduled toss time.'Meanwhile, live visuals showed England players kicking a football around to stay loose. West Indies players remained in the dressing room upon arrival. As a precaution, the pitch and square were kept under cover, despite no rain at the time.advertisementThe toss, originally slated for 12:30 PM local time (5:00 PM IST), was pushed to 1:10 PM (5:40 PM IST), with the match set to begin at 1:30 PM (6:00 PM IST), assuming weather remains cooperative. No overs are expected to be lost.England, having secured convincing wins in Birmingham and Cardiff, are eyeing a 3–0 series triumph. The West Indies will look to finish the ODI leg on a high before the three-match T20I series begins on Friday.

England squad announced for 1st Test vs India: Jamie Overton earns surprise recall, wait for Jofra Archer continues

Jamie Overton has received a surprise call-up as England on Thursday announced their 14-man squad for the first Test against India. The 31-year-old played the only Test of his career in June 2022 and now returns to replace the injured Gus Atkinson. Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse are all back in the squad after missing England's one-off Test against Zimbabwe last month. Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer are the notable names missing from the squad which will be led by Ben Stokes. Archer was expected to return to Test cricket for the first time in since February 2021 in this series but a thumb injury that he sustained while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League has put doubts on that. Archer was supposed to play in England's recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies and potentially return to red-ball action in the second of England Lions' unofficial Tests against India A. He ended up having to sit out both matches. Wood, meanwhile, could return for the final Test of the series if he has a seamless recovering from a surgery on his left knee that was done in March. Bethell had missed the Zimbabwe Test due to his commitments in the IPL. His return poses a potential selection headache for England at the top of the order. While his three half-centuries at No.3 in his debut series in New Zealand put Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope's under doubt, both went on to score tons against Zimbabwe. India's five-Test tour of England starts on June 20 at Headingley after which the second match will be played at Edgbaston from July 2. Lord's will host the third Test from July 10 after which the fourth Test will be played at Old Trafford from July 23. It is a quick turnover after that with the fifth Test scheduled to be played at the Oval from July 31. England squad for first Test vs India: Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Ben Stokes (capt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
