AM Best Downgrades Credit Ratings of Southern States Insurance Exchange
OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2025--
AM Best has downgraded the Financial Strength Rating to A- (Excellent) from A (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating to 'a-' (Excellent) from 'a' (Excellent) of Southern States Insurance Exchange (SSIE) (Richmond, VA). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable.
The ratings reflect SSIE's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM).
The rating downgrades reflect the change in the company's operating performance assessment to adequate from strong following continued volatility in underwriting and operating results in recent years, due primarily to a culmination of overall claims inflation, large losses, higher reinsurance costs and rate adequacy challenges given the aforementioned. The company also suffered higher-than-normal losses from weather-related events in 2023 and 2024 and posted adverse prior-year reserve development in 2024. Weaker-than-expected underwriting results from its workers' compensation line of business, added to the deterioration in SSIE's key profitability ratios since 2021.
Beginning in 2023, several corrective actions were taken to restore profitability to pre-2023 levels via improved pricing, risk selection, enhanced customer safety and loss control initiatives. Actions taken by management in 2023 and 2024 are expected to stabilize underwriting and operating results over time.
SSIE's balance sheet strength is supported by its strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalization, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), and conservative underwriting and loss reserve leverage measures. The business profile assessment reflects the company's niche market in agricultural industry and geographic concentration in mid-Atlantic and Southeast U.S. states. ERM remains appropriate and in line with its risk profile.

Kevin Durant Trade Watch Heats Up With Five Teams In The Mix
Kevin Durant Trade Watch Heats Up With Five Teams In The Mix originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Kevin Durant sweepstakes are officially heating up, and the future Hall of Famer's time in Phoenix is all but over. Advertisement According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Phoenix Suns and Durant's business partner, Rich Kleiman, are 'sifting through trade options' and working closely together to chart the superstar's next destination. Multiple meetings have already taken place, and momentum is building toward a deal before the 2025 NBA Draft. Durant, who averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists this past season while shooting 53.1% from midrange and an NBA-best 49.7% on jumpers, is still performing at an elite level despite turning 37 this September. Yet, after a chaotic season in Phoenix where the Suns finished 36-46 despite carrying the most expensive roster in NBA history, change is inevitable. With a new head coach in Jordan Ott and a restructured front office led by Brian Gregory, the franchise is shifting gears, and Durant is not part of their long-term plan. Charania reports that five teams have emerged as the main suitors: the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, and New York Knicks. Advertisement Each offers a unique combination of young talent, draft capital, and competitive ambition. Some dark-horse teams are also reportedly lurking, but it's these five franchises that appear firmly in the race. However, one team may already be leading the pack. According to Bill Simmons, a deal with the San Antonio Spurs is already done in principle, it's just a matter of timing. Simmons says both parties have mutual interest and have been working behind the scenes for weeks. For Durant, pairing with Victor Wembanyama, the most transcendent young talent in the league, is an opportunity to remain in the Western Conference and chase another championship. For the Spurs, it would mark a seismic shift from rebuild to contender, instantly vaulting them into the playoff mix. The Houston Rockets, who have quietly assembled one of the best young cores in the league, are also making a serious push. With Ime Udoka as head coach, Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun blossoming, and the cap space to absorb Durant's $54.7 million contract, Houston could give Phoenix exactly what it wants: picks, prospects, and financial relief. Advertisement Minnesota has emerged as a surprise suitor, potentially offering Karl-Anthony Towns in a blockbuster deal. Miami, meanwhile, continues to lurk in the superstar market, and Durant's offensive efficiency would be a dream fit alongside Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo. As for the Knicks, they remain a major-market player with a deep war chest of picks and young assets, though internal doubts about fit and timeline remain. Durant is eligible to sign a two-year extension worth $112 million once traded or up to $124 million if he waits six months. That leverage, along with his reputation and elite shooting, makes him one of the most unique trade pieces in modern NBA history. One thing is certain: the Kevin Durant era in Phoenix is coming to a close. Where he lands next could reshape the league once again. McDonald's Settles $10B Discrimination Lawsuit Brought by Byron Allen's Media Company
McDonald's reached a settlement in the $10 billion lawsuit brought by Byron Allen's Allen Entertainment Studios, in which the media mogul accused the fast food company of discriminating against Black-owned media companies. Allen's companies and McDonald's released a joint statement on Friday, revealing that they'd come to 'an agreement to settle pending litigation between them.' At the tailend of last year, U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin found that McDonald's may have violated federal and state civil rights laws by keeping a separate advertising tier for companies who create content target toward Black audiences. More from The Hollywood Reporter Byron Allen Puts His Local TV Stations Up for Sale Byron Allen's 'Comics Unleashed' Gets the Post-Colbert Time Slot on CBS - Again Byron Allen's $10B Discrimination Lawsuit Against McDonald's Over Ad Spend to Go to Trial 'We are pleased to find a resolution that maintains our business relationship,' Allen's Entertainment Studios and The Weather Channel said in a statement. 'During the course of this litigation, many of our preconceptions have been clarified, and we acknowledge McDonald's commitment to investing in Black-owned media properties and increasing access to opportunity. Our differences are behind us, and we look forward to working together.' The news comes after McDonald's was set to go to trial for the lawsuit. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Later in the release, it was noted that 'The parties reached a confidential commercial agreement whereby McDonald's will continue to purchase advertising from ESN in a manner that aligns with its advertising strategy and commercial objectives and ESN will dismiss its lawsuit against McDonald's in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.' Additionally, they noted, 'Under the terms of the agreement, which are confidential, McDonald's is not admitting any wrongdoing, and the ads sold will, as per all such commercial deals, be priced at market value. 'We are pleased that Mr. Allen has come to appreciate McDonald's unwavering commitment to inclusion, and has agreed to refocus his energies on a mutually beneficial commercial arrangement that is consistent with other McDonald's supplier relationships,' McDonald's USA, LLC said. 'Our company's unique three-legged stool model relies on mutual respect, and we look forward to ESN's contributions to the betterment of our system.' AM Best Affirms Credit Ratings of Through Transport Mutual Insurance Association Limited and Its Subsidiaries
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings of 'a-' (Excellent) of Through Transport Mutual Insurance Association Limited (TTB) (Bermuda) and its subsidiaries, TT Club Mutual Insurance Limited (TTI) (United Kingdom) and TT Club Mutual Insurance N.V. (TTNV) (Netherlands). TTB, TTI and TTNV are collectively known as the TT Club (the club). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable. The ratings of TTB reflect its balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. The ratings of TTI and TTNV reflect their strategic importance to TTB, and the implicit and explicit support that they receive from TTB, particularly in the form of comprehensive reinsurance protection. TTB's balance sheet strength is underpinned by its consolidated risk-adjusted capitalisation, which is well in excess of the minimum required for the strongest assessment level, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR). The club's balance sheet strength also benefits from a relatively conservative investment strategy and a long track record of prudent reserving, with releases of overall reserves recorded in all financial years, except 2023. AM Best views TTB's moderate dependence on reinsurance, used to manage the club's capacity, as an offsetting balance sheet strength assessment factor. The associated risks are mitigated partially by the high credit quality of the club's reinsurance partners, many of which TT Club has long-established relationships with. TTB's adequate operating performance is demonstrated by a five-year (2020-2024) weighted average return-on-equity ratio of 4.3%. TTB reported technical losses in 2023 and 2024, in part driven by higher reserves booked for U.S. bodily injury claims due to the elevated loss experience of this line in recent years. To mitigate the risk of adverse development in prospective years, management has been increasing the reserve margin, which it holds in excess of the best estimate reserves. In addition, TT Club elected to expense the cost of an information technology project upfront in years 2021 to 2024, rather than capitalising it on the balance sheet. These factors resulted in the company reporting a five-year weighted average combined ratio of 100.8%. The club's overall earnings remain supported by modest investment returns, reflecting the conservative asset allocation. TT Club is a specialist mutual insurance organisation, operating in the international transport and logistics industry. It offers property and liability risk covers for port, ship and logistics operators, and provides loss prevention and risk management services to its members. The club has a strong position in its niche market, which is highlighted by its excellent member retention and supported by its global presence.
