A French teaching assistant was stabbed to death on Tuesday by a 15-year-old student at Françoise Dolto Schoolin eastern France.
The school student was arrested after attacking the 31-year-old assistant with a knife during a bag search in Nogent in eastern France, officials said.
The teaching assistant was "simply doing her job by welcoming students at the entrance to the school", Elisabeth Allain-Moreno, secretary general of the SE-UNSA teachers' union, was quoted as saying by the news agency AFP.
A police officer assisting with bag inspections sustained minor injuries during the arrest, according to the gendarmes (security forces) . Authorities are currently investigating the incident at Françoise Dolto School in Nogent.
French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the incident. "While protecting our children, a teaching assistant lost her life, the victim of a senseless wave of violence," Macron wrote on X, commenting on the latest in a spate of such incidents at French schools.
"The nation is in mourning and the government is mobilised to reduce crime," he added.
Fatal attacks like these have been uncommon in France, but there has been an increasing concern about violence in schools. To address this, the French education ministry implemented bag checks at certain schools this year. Over a two-month span this spring, 186 knives were confiscated during the checks, and 32 individuals were arrested, according to the interior minister's office on Tuesday.

Visa scam crackdown: CBI charges 8 people in French Embassy fraud; Interpol Silver Notice issued to trace global assets

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against eight individuals, including a local law officer at the French Embassy in New Delhi and his family members, for their alleged involvement in a high-profile visa fraud racket targeting Schengen visa applicants. According to a statement issued by the agency on June 11, the chargesheet was filed before the Special CBI Court in New Delhi and names the embassy official, his father, brother, and wife, as well as two visa agents and two middlemen. The case pertains to the fraudulent issuance of Schengen visas between January 2021 and May 2022. Investigators allege that the accused exploited their position in the visa section of the French Embassy to process and approve visa applications for hefty bribes, primarily from applicants in Punjab. Visa agents linked to the racket allegedly collected sums ranging from Rs 13 lakh to Rs 45 lakh per applicant, under the promise of quick visa approvals. The CBI claimed that once the visas were issued, supporting documentation was destroyed to eliminate paper trails. A series of searches in Punjab and Delhi yielded large quantities of unaccounted cash and documents linked to domestic and overseas properties valued in crores. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 12000W лазерен заваръчен апарат (4 в 1) – революция в заваряването! Undo The agency said the two visa agents acted as key conduits, channeling the illicit funds through various bank accounts, ultimately reaching the embassy official and his family through two middlemen. Also, the CBI's International Operations Division, working with the Interpol wing of the agency, secured India's first-ever Silver Notice from Interpol to help trace and identify assets acquired overseas through the alleged proceeds of crime. 'This marks a key milestone in India's use of international policing tools to follow the money trail beyond its borders,' the agency said. The CBI added that it remains committed to combating transnational crime and assisting victims both in India and abroad who fall prey to such organized criminal networks. Swedish PM to meet Nato head Mark Rutte Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will host Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte for a bilateral meeting in Stockholm. The high-level engagement will be followed by a joint press conference. According to reports, discussions are expected to focus on strengthening Nato's collective deterrence and defence capabilities, particularly in light of the evolving security landscape in Europe. Both leaders will likely address Sweden's contributions to the Alliance, which include plans to further increase defence spending and an offer to lead a new Nato battlegroup to be established in Finland. The meeting comes at a crucial time, with Sweden having recently become a full member of Nato in March 2024. The first court hearing in connection with charges related to the UK general election betting scandal will take place today. Fifteen individuals, including former Conservative MP Craig Williams and Welsh Senedd member Russell George, are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court. Conservative Party candidate Craig Williams speaks has been charged alongside 14 others with gambling offences. File image/Reuters The Gambling Commission launched an investigation in June 2024 into these alleged 'cheating' offences under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005. The charges suggest that individuals with insider knowledge placed bets on the timing of the 2024 general election before the date was publicly announced by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. While political betting is legal in the UK, using insider information for such wagers is a criminal offence. The UK's gambling regulator filed a chargesheet against the individuals on April 16 this year. The scandal cast a significant shadow over the Conservative Party's election campaign and has prompted renewed debate about the ethics of political betting and the need for stricter regulations. If found guilty, those charged could face fines or prison sentences of up to two years. Islamic State official Rakhim Boev killed in Syria airstrikes, says US

AFP Published 13 Jun 2025, 05:09 AM IST The US military announced Thursday that a recent airstrike had killed an Islamic State group official in northwest Syria. In a post to social media, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces "conducted a precision airstrike in northwest Syria killing Rakhim Boev, a Syria-based ISIS official," using another name for IS. The post on X said Boev was "involved in planning external operations threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and civilians." The accompanying image depicts an SUV vehicle with a bashed-in windshield and roof. AFP previously reported that two people were killed in separate drone strikes Tuesday, on a car and a motorcycle, in the northwestern bastion of the Islamist former rebels who now head the Syrian government. A call to CENTCOM seeking confirmation that the incidents are related was not immediately returned. The twin drone strikes in the Idlib region mirror the US-led coalition's past strikes on jihadists in the area. During a meeting in Riyadh last month, US President Donald Trump called on his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa to help Washington prevent a resurgence by IS.
