The Historic Cabarrus Association is working to preserve a schoolhouse that's more than a century old, according to the Independent Tribune.
The African-American schoolhouse Meadow View was likely built in 1890.

A few months ago, organizers started a GoFundMe account to raise $7,000 to help preserve and revitalize the school.
Officials said it will cost about $500,000 to rebuild the school.
Meadow View currently resides in storage behind the Academy Center in Concord.

Yosemite changes rulebook after trans pride flag hung on El Capitan
YOSEMITE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – An updated rulebook for Yosemite National Park would criminalize activists for flying certain flags within the world-renowned landscape. According to the Yosemite Superintendent's Compendium approved last month, flags bigger than 15 square feet are prohibited from being hung in designated areas, including on the park's iconic rock formation El Capitan. The ban also applies to a series or combination of banners, flags, or signs that total more than 15 square feet in aggregate (unless authorized by permit). Yosemite National Park's El Capitan has recently served as a medium from which activists have expressed messages of distress or protest. In February, park rangers held an upside-down American flag from the historic mountain as federal cuts were made to the National Park Service. More recently, on May 20, what was described as the largest flag hung from the mountainside showcased a transgender pride flag. Organizers said they flew the pride flag 'to make a statement: Trans people are natural and Trans people are loved. Let this flag fly higher than hate.' At the time, Yosemite National Park issued a statement confirming that park rangers were aware of the unauthorized display, adding that 'the NPS does not endorse such actions, and the flag was removed as soon as possible.' The trans pride was displayed on El Capitan on May 20, the same day the updated superintendent's compendium was approved. Nexstar's KSEE/KGPE has asked Yosemite National Park for a statement on the updated superintendent's compendium and whether or not it was changed in response to the display of the trans pride flag. Park officials did not respond to a request for information. In the updated compendium, it states that the restriction is needed to 'provide for an unimpaired visitor experience, protect natural and cultural resources in designated Wilderness and Potential Wilderness Addition portions of the park,' as well as public safety.

Group to place 1,000 American flags in Daniel Island field
DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The Daniel Island Exchange Club will pay special tribute to those who served through its 10th annual 'Field of Honor' event this weekend. The club and volunteers on Saturday will transform a lawn into a sea of red, white, and blue as they place 1,000 American flags along River Landing Drive. Organizers say the flags are sponsored to pay tribute to heroes who have earned our gratitude. The flags will remain on display through July 6. 'Those who have experienced a Field of Honor display know to expect a touching scene of flags flying to celebrate our heroes. Those who are first time visitors will find that the display must be experienced to be fully appreciated,' said event organizers. Miami diners prefer to eat late. What about it?
Surprising absolutely no one, dinner time for Miamians skews much later compared with our fellow American diners. By the numbers: In 2024, about 10% of dinner reservations were made between 9pm–10pm, according to Resy data shared with Axios. Nationally, less than 4% of reservations were made during that time slot. Why it matters: Science be damned! We know eating earlier in the day supports your body's natural clock, boosting metabolism and improving sleep, experts say. But we need that late-night meal to keep us full for when the DJ inevitably begins their set at 3am. Just kidding. The intrigue: Miami is made up of mostly Latino and Hispanic residents, who tend to eat later, which could be because of cultural norms of eating a larger lunch or just running late. And while we tend to reject the often negative stereotypes around Miamians and our tardiness, these generalized assumptions may be warranted. Zoom in: More than 17% of reservations were made between 7pm–8pm, which we realize is not a crazy or late dinner time. Most other cities also had the highest percentage of reservations made during this time, the data show. But nearly 16% of reservations were made between 8pm–9pm, compared with about 10% nationally. Meanwhile, just 7.2% of reservations were made between 5pm–6pm. Of the two dozen cities included in the report, Miami was the only one to have less than 11% of its reservations be made during that hour block. Between the lines: The percentage is of total reservations for the day, including for meals such as brunch.
