Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won $2.6M team tournament they decided to play after 'drunken lunch

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry will defend their Zurich Classic of New Orleans title this week, and the genesis of their 2024 victory is a "drunken lunch" with
Michael Jordan
to mark Europe's Ryder Cup victory.
McIlroy and Lowry joined forces
at TPC Louisiana 12 months ago and defeated Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff to clinch the title and
almost $1.3 million in prize money apiece.
For the close friends, it was
a memorable experience on and off the course,
from being applauded out of a Bourbon Street restaurant the night before the final round to McIlroy
performing a rendition of Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'
' for fans at an after-party following their victory.
The Irish pals
played a pivotal role in Europe's Ryder Cup victory over the United States in Rome six months earlier, and before teeing it up in "The Big Easy," McIlroy revealed it was his idea to propose playing in the tournament after a few glasses of wine.

McIlroy made the short trip to Lowry's home in Jupiter,
Florida
, to share a vintage bottle of claret and reminisce about a special week at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in October, and it was there that the five-time major champion made his proposal.
'I asked him [to play]. You know it was actually, we had this really drunken lunch after the Ryder Cup last year, and I said after, 'You wanna play the Zurich together?' And we were like, yeah, let's do it," McIlroy told
GOLF.com.
Lowry shared details of that fateful meal in an interview with the
Irish Independent,
revealing that they were joined by Europe's Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald and basketball icon – and golf fanatic – Jordan.
'Rory, Luke and MJ sitting around talking about the Ryder Cup,' Lowry laughed. "Not really how I envisioned the celebrations.'
Doubts emerged whether McIlroy would stay true to his commitment to return the Zurich Classic, which begins on Thursday, after the emotional rollercoaster of winning The Masters less than two weeks ago, completing the career grand slam and ending a 10-year major championship drought in the process.

But Lowry confirmed at last week's RBC Heritage that McIlroy would indeed be back in the Bayou. 'We'll be there. I talked to him [Wednesday] morning," Lowry told Golfweek.
'We're good to go. To be honest, I didn't want him to feel like he had to play because of me. He's not letting me down if he wanted to take some time. He feels like he wants to get back out there. He feels like next week is a good week to do it. So, yeah, we'll be there.'

Things you didn't know about Baileys

The name Baileys isn't Irish either According to the Irish Times , Gluckman and Seymour-Davies borrowed the name from Baileys Bistro, a restaurant located beneath their new office in SoHo, London. It just sounded right. Baileys comes in more flavours than you'd expect Above From Dublin to the world: Baileys has won hearts with its variety of flavour twists (photo: Getty Images / Monica Schipper) Beyond the original Irish Cream, the brand has expanded its repertoire to include indulgent favourites like Salted Caramel, Espresso Crème, Chocolate Cherry and Vanilla Cinnamon. Seasonal specials such as Pumpkin Spice keep things fresh, while the vegan-friendly Baileys Almande—made with almond milk—offers a plant-based option. Limited-edition releases such as Strawberries & Cream, Chocolat Luxe and Dulce de Leche (the latter exclusive to Mexico) prove Baileys isn't afraid to experiment. Pure ingredients, proudly sourced Each year, Baileys uses more than 250 million litres of fresh milk sourced directly from Ireland. According to a 2015 report by the Irish government's Merrion Street agency, this milk is collected from over 40,000 cows across 1,500 carefully selected farms. It is then transported to the Baileys facility in Dublin, where it becomes the cream used in the liqueur—a product with a shelf life of up to two years. Above Baileys has come to symbolise indulgence and ease (photo: Instagram / @baileysofficial) At least five men have laid claim to its creation The names most often associated with Baileys' beginnings include David Gluckman, David Dand, Mac Macpherson, Steve Wilson and Tom Jago. Among them, Jago is widely regarded as the most credible source. A pioneer in spirits innovation, he also helped create Johnnie Walker Blue Label and Malibu, and later co-founded The Last Drop Distillers with James Espey. According to Jago, Gluckman and Seymour-Davies were copywriters, Macpherson served as the chemist, Wilson assisted him, and Dand oversaw the project. Together, they experimented with a mix of whiskey, cream, sugar and chocolate, along with a name that would eventually become world-famous. A favourite among women Above Versatile and stylish, Baileys pairs beautifully with a wide range of treats (photo: Instagram / @baileysofficial) With an approachable alcohol content of around 17% and a soft, sweet profile, Baileys holds strong appeal, particularly among women. In 2014, Diageo launched a female-focused campaign titled 'This is for Us,' conceived by an all-female creative team at BBH London. According to Irish Central, the campaign was crafted specifically for the Millennial woman. It isn't just for after dinner In 2019, Baileys debuted a line of coffee creamers (think cold brews in flavours such as Caramel and Irish Coffee) aimed at brightening up your morning ritual. The brand has also ventured into desserts, releasing products like yoghurt and chocolate biscuits for fans wanting a little extra indulgence.

How Ryan Coogler's ‘Sinners' raises the bar for the horror genre

Above Michael B Jordan plays Smoke and Stack (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) Set in 1932, Clarksdale, Mississippi, the film takes us to the tail end of the Prohibition Era. The set design, dialogue and diction of the characters immerse the audience in the world that director Coogler built. Despite being set over 30 years after the end of the Old West era, the film somehow watches like a Western—peculiar but welcome. Sinners takes its time with its worldbuilding. For a movie about vampires, it takes about 50 minutes for one to appear on screen, easing audiences in without feeling dragged. Above Jack O'Connell plays Remmick, an Irish Vampire in 'Sinners' (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) When we're introduced to the first vampire, Remmick (played by Jack O'Connell), he's being hunted by a band of Choctaw vampire hunters. Their brief scene time commanded the screen and showed us that the threat is serious and real, which makes it disappointing that they were never seen again. It would've been great to see how the experts would deal with a vampire threat, but their lack of involvement in the plot is understandable to avoid the 'knight in shining armour' cliché. See also: From controller to screen: 5 TV shows adapted from video games to watch Above The vampires waiting outside the juke bar (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) The film's greatest strength is its music, composed by Ludwig Göransson. From the blues to country and even Irish melodies, each song was skillfully performed by the cast. Two scenes come to mind where the music was at its most powerful are Miles Caton's I Lied to You and O'Connell's Rocky Road to Dublin . The former is perhaps the film's most iconic scene, which is ironic as it didn't contain any vampires. Shot in one take, this scene gave audiences a look at Sammie's musical gift to summon their ancestors. African ancestors and modern DJs filled the room as the juke bar's customers jived to his song—blending ancient instruments with the familiar scratching of turntables to the blues. The latter is a mesmerising yet eerie foil to Caton's song. Rocky Road to Dublin was performed in an open field outside the sawmill by the vampires, who seemed like they were chanting demonically. O'Connell's performance was perfect, unsettling the audience without the need for jump scares and grotesque visuals. While present, the vampires preferred to charm their way in rather than with force—showing us true horror. Above The cast of 'Sinners' making their last stand in the juke bar (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) The whole cast's performance was perfect, capturing their characters' little nuances. Playing dual roles as the twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, Jordan made them feel like two separate people—making it easy for the audience to tell who's who. Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku, who played the brothers' love interests, Mary and Annie, complemented their lovers—adding depth to their characters. Mary and Stack were exes who had difficulty being together due to the racial inequalities of the time, while Smoke and Annie had a foundation of love and support. 'I really found this whole experience of working with Michael quite magical. When it was Smoke and Annie, our relationship on the set, as Wunmi and Michael, was so easy and our shorthand was so in sync… His energy was so different that I could tell with my back turned who was walking onto the set—if it was Stack or Smoke. No question. I didn't even have to look. It was so obvious to me. It was so nuanced and fine-tuned. The vibration was so clear. I could tell without a shadow of a doubt if it was Stack or Smoke,' says Mosaku. Above The cast of Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' (Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros) Towards the end, when the dust has settled from the vampire attack of last night, the film circles back and shows us Sammie's fate. Once the credits roll, make sure to stay in your seat as there is an additional scene that provides closure and a happy ending for the remaining characters. Coogler's Sinners is by far the best film of 2025 so far and deserves all the praise it gets—hopefully setting new standards for the genre as a whole. Shedeur Sanders set for huge financial hit from Colorado as Cleveland Browns contract details emerge

Slipping down the NFL Draft board isn't just a hit to a young player's pride, it also takes a toll on their bank account. Shedeur Sanders, once projected as a top-five pick, experienced this firsthand when he fell to the fifth round , which significantly reduced his potential earnings. After leaving Colorado with a $6.5 million NIL valuation, the second-highest in all of college sports, Coach Prime's son will now begin his NFL career with a base salary of roughly $951,000. While this is a substantial amount for the average American worker, it falls short of the millions he was expected to earn if his draft projections had remained steady. Despite being ranked as the No. 2 quarterback prospect after last season's evaluations, five quarterbacks were chosen before him. Oregon's Dillon Gabriel, a Heisman finalist who Sanders once outranked, was drafted by Cleveland in the third round. This selection secured Gabriel an estimated annual salary of $1.2 million. He was the No. 2 highest NIL earner, behind Texas prodigy Arch Manning, even surpassing future stars like NBA No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck, and Ohio State superstar wide receiver and National Champion Jeremiah Smith. Sanders made history as the first college football player to sign with Nike under NIL rules. He also joined an 11-player endorsement team for Beats by Dre last August and used his influence through Colorado's 5420 Alliance, which supported over 350 CU athletes across 11 sports. However, he now finds himself in a crowded Browns quarterback room, which could limit his chances of playing in the league. The controversial starter, Deshaun Watson, is still recovering from an injury but remains at the top of the depth chart. Former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco, three-team backup Kenny Pickett, and newcomer Gabriel are all vying to outperform Sanders for the starting position. Shedeur Sanders slid to round 5 before being taken by the Cleveland Browns (Image: Getty) ESPN's official depth chart highlights the tough competition, listing Watson, Flacco, Pickett, and Gabriel among the rostered quarterbacks. This leaves Sanders needing to prove his worth to secure a role. Alongside Gabriel and Sanders, Cleveland's draft included first-round pick Mason Graham, linebacker Carson Schwesinger, Bowling Green tight end Harold Fannin Jr. , Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson, and Ohio State transfer Quinshon Judkins. While Sanders won't be handed anything on a silver platter in Cleveland, the NFL is already capitalising on his star power. His selection to the Browns remains the pinned tweet on the NFL's X account, a post that has garnered over 9 million impressions. To put it into perspective, top pick Cam Ward received 1.2 million impressions on X when he was selected, and Sander's former teammate and No. 2 pick, Travis Hunter, racked up 2.1 million.
