Vice mayor who called ICE ‘the biggest gang there is' and for ‘cholos' to defend their territory should resign, cop union says

Independent6 hours ago

The vice mayor of a small city in California who called on the criminal 'cholos' of Los Angeles to stand up to raids on undocumented migrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents is facing calls to resign, with the local police union calling her actions 'shameful.'
In a clip posted to Instagram and then swiftly deleted, Cynthia Gonzalez, Vice Mayor of Cudahy, said: 'I want to know where all the cholos are at in Los Angeles – 18th Street, Florencia Where's the leadership at?
'Because you guys are all about territory and, 'This is 18th Street, this is Florencia.' You guys tag everything up, claiming hood and now that your hood's being invaded by the biggest gang there is, there ain't a peep out of you.' Gonzalez appeared to be referring to ICE but does not name them in the video.
She continued: 'It's everyone else who's not about the gang life that's out there protesting and speaking up. We're out there fighting our turf, protecting our turf, protecting our people, and, like, where you at?
'Dude they're running amok all up on your streets, on your streets and in your city and, peep, when the big gang guns come in nothing but, like, quiet and we're out here, the regular ones that have never been jumped in out here calling things out and trying to organize.
'So don't be trying to claim no block, no nothing if you're not showing up right now trying to, like, help out and organize. I don't want to hear a peep out of you once they're gone, trying to claim that this is my block. This was not your block. You weren't even here helping out. So whoever is the leadership over there just f***ing get your members in order.'
The L.A. Police Protective League (LAPPL) has reacted angrily and demanded Gonzalez's resignation.
'The 18th Street and Florencia street gangs are notoriously dangerous Los Angeles-based criminal enterprises,' it said in a statement.
'Both gangs have a known history of murdering police officers. In 1998, an 18th Street gang member murdered LAPD Officer Filberto Cuesta. Recently, several Florencia gang members were convicted of the 2022 murder of LAPD Officer Fernando Arroyos.
'What Ms Gonzalez urged and taunted these specific gangs to do in her social media post puts police officers and other law enforcement professionals at greater risk. Her actions are deplorable and potentially illegal. She should resign and she should be prosecuted if what she called for broke the law.'
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also responded to the video, reposting it on Tuesday evening with a statement calling Gonzalez 'despicable' and alleging that she was calling on the gangs 'to commit violence against our brave ICE law enforcement.'
'This kind of garbage has led to a more than 500 percent increase in assaults against our ICE law enforcement officers. Secretary [Kristi] Noem has been clear: If you assault a federal officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,' the DHS said.
The FBI has stated that it cannot currently confirm or deny whether an investigation into Gonzalez is underway. Still, spokesperson Laura Eimiller noted: 'Generally speaking, of course, the FBI condemns any calls for violence or targeting of law enforcement with violence.'
The Independent has contacted Gonzalez for comment, but she has so far refused all media requests pertaining to the video.
The City of Cudahy did issue a brief statement of its own in which it said: 'The comments made by the Vice Mayor reflect her personal views and do not represent the views or official position of the City of Cudahy. The City will not be providing further comment.'
The Los Angeles Times has since quoted an attorney representing Gonzalez as saying that 'any suggestion that she advocated for violence is categorically false and without merit,' putting them at odds with the LAPPL and DHS in their interpretation of her words.
The attorney continued: 'In her post, Dr Gonzalez issued a challenge to the Latino community: join the thousands of Angelenos already peacefully organizing in response to ongoing enforcement actions.
'Importantly, Dr Gonzalez in no way encouraged anyone to engage in violence.'
Gonzalez's controversial video comes after weeks of controversy caused by federal raids on migrants in downtown Los Angeles, which saw local people hit the streets to protest and President Donald Trump call in the National Guard and deploy active-duty Marines to support local law enforcement against the wishes of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass.
Two weeks ago, Gonzalez joined other L.A. County mayors at a press conference hosted by Bass at City Hall to address ICE's actions.

Team Trump hawks ‘DADDY' T-shirts using mugshot photo after White House embraces NATO chief's nickname

Donald Trump's campaign fundraising arm is now selling T-shirts with the president's mugshot and the word 'DADDY' emblazoned on the front after the White House embraced the nickname used by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to describe the president earlier this week. 'THEY'RE CALLING ME DADDY!' the president wrote through a Trump National Committee Joint Fundraising Committee message on Thursday. 'When Biden was President, we were LAUGHED at on the world stage. The whole world WALKED ALL OVER US!' the message said. 'But thanks to your favorite President (ME!) we are respected once again,' the message added. 'Moments ago, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called me DADDY on the world stage. How nice!' The shirt — featuring Trump's booking photo from Georgia, where the president and his allies are criminally charged with racketeering and conspiring to overturn 2020 election results in the state — costs $27. The message follows a White House video on social media that shows Trump returning to Washington after the NATO summit in The Hague, set to Usher's 2010 song 'Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home).' Rutte jokingly referred to Trump as 'daddy' during a sit-down in front of the assembled press as they discussed the conflict between Israel and Iran. Trump had shared an obsequious text message from Rutte before the summit on Truth Social. Even after Trump announced a ceasefire between the countries, the missiles kept coming, causing Trump to lash out with some harsh words for both nations. 'We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f*** they're doing, do you understand that?' Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House before setting off for the summit in the Netherlands. At the summit, Trump told the press: 'They've got a big fight, like two kids in a schoolyard. You know, they fight like hell. You can't stop them, let them fight for two, three minutes, then it's easier to stop them…' 'And then daddy has to, sometimes, use strong language,' Rutte added. 'Strong language, yeah, every once in a while,' Trump replied. The president was subsequently asked about the interaction and if it suggested that he viewed other countries as 'children.' 'He likes me. If he doesn't, I'll let you know, I'll come back, and I'll hit him hard,' Trump responded. 'He did it very affectionately. 'Daddy, you're my daddy.'' Rutte later said that he was trying to compare Trump's relationship with Europe to that of a father and his family. 'What I said is that, sometimes, in Europe, I hear sometimes countries saying, 'Hey, Mark, will the U.S. stay with us?'' he said. 'And I said that sounds a little bit like a small child asking his daddy, 'Hey, are you still staying with the family?'' The committee has sent more than 1,000 fundraising emails since the president was inaugurated and recently used the protests against the administration's immigration raids in Los Angeles to ask supporters for cash. The campaign fundraising committee uses Trump's images and signature as if the messages were sent by the president himself. The committees have often used scandals to raise money from supporters. His mugshot has also been put on other T-shirts — and Christmas wrapping paper — and the president's criminal indictments have been included in hundreds of messages. In the Trump shop, an array of MAGA hats is available, including those with the phrases 'Gulf of America' and 'DOGE.' A copy of the Gulf of America or the DOGE executive orders is available for $43, as are T-shirts depicting Trump after the attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania, last year.

Eric Adams, mayor of New York City, launches re-election campaign

Eric Adams, the New York mayor, launched his reelection campaign on Thursday, days after socialist Zohran Mamdani sent political shockwaves through the New York and national Democratic party by winning its mayoral nomination for November's election. Adams, who did not mount a campaign for the Democratic nomination as his popular support cratered due to a corruption scandal, will now run as an independent candidate. Mamdani's decisive win against the former governor Andrew Cuomo, could see Adams get wider appeal in his, though much will depend if Cuomo also runs in the November race. 'I will fight for everyday New Yorkers who just want their city to darn work for them,' Adams said at a press conference on the steps of City Hall, contrasting himself with Mamdani who he attacked as a 'silver spoon' socialist. 'It's a choice between a candidate with a blue collar and one with a silver spoon,' he said. 'I'm not interested in slogans, I'm not interested in solutions. I don't work with special interests, I work for the people.' Adams said his record as mayor stands above the noise of politics, and his record surpasses his critics. 'There are some critics who spend more time attacking than achieving. They have a record of tweets, I have a record on the streets, a record of results.' Adams' formal entry into the race comes as the city's business community has reacted harshly to Mamdani's nomination and policy proposals that include a freeze on rents, free bus services, city-run groceries and higher taxes on the wealthy. They may now shift their support from Cuomo to Adams. The business community is 'struggling to understand the implications of Mamdani's victory', Kathy Wylde, CEO of Partnership for New York City, said in an interview with Semafor. Wylde acknowledged that Mamdani's focus on affordability tapped into 'the financial insecurity young people feel and their anger that the established political class has done nothing to fix it. It's not an endorsement of socialism but rather a rejection of the status quo, which threatens to bring on the kind of political instability that business hates.' But Adams' reputation took a beating when he was indicted on federal corruption charges – charges that were later dropped in an apparent deal with the incoming Trump administration. Since Trump returned to the White House Adams has developed an ever closer political relationship with the US president – dismaying many Democrats. In any second term, Adams promised to continue to bring down crime, launch a citywide mental health initiative, advance vocational training and expand affordable housing. He promised that the campaign 'is going to be the most interesting political campaign in the history of the city'.
