Police hate crime probe after Arran Pride flags removed

Yahoo7 days ago

Police are investigating the removal of Pride decorations from a street in Arran as a hate crime.
Officers on the island launched a probe after flags were pulled down from Main Street in Brodick between 02:00 and 07:00, ahead of the Arran Pride event.
Reports on social media said some of the flags had been torn from their posts and later found dumped on the beach.
Organisers of the event said they had been made aware that decorations had been removed by "an unknown group".
The Pride parade went ahead as planned on Saturday afternoon, finishing at about 13:00.
Sgt Clare Neilson, from Arran Police Office, appealed for anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
She added: "We are taking this very seriously and are following positive lines of inquiry."

Thousands of trees to be planted near Exeter

Up to 3,000 trees are to be planted on the outskirts of Exeter, according to East Devon District Council. Broadclyst and Poltimore have been chosen for the project, with a funding boost from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Volunteers have already planted the first 150 trees, forming a new hedgerow at Clyst Meadows Country Park, near Broadclyst Station. The project team is now looking for more land in Broadclyst and Poltimore to complete the planting. More news stories for Devon Listen to the latest news for Devon Once complete, a total of up to one hectare (2.5 acres) of native trees and 600 metres (1,970 ft) of new hedgerow will be planted. Councillor Paula Fernley said: "More trees mean more biodiversity, more shade and shelter, and better resilience to climate change. It's also brilliant for wellbeing." The trees are to be grown locally by volunteers at the Saving Devon's Treescapes Broadclyst Tree Nursery using seeds collected from the area. Saving Devon's Treescapes is a four-year project led by Devon Wildlife Trust and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It aims to plant and nurture 250,000 trees outside traditional woodland settings across Devon by 2026. Michael Rogers, project manager at Saving Devon's Treescapes, added: "Even if we don't always notice it, most of us have seen the impact of ash dieback – from isolated trees to whole woodlands losing their canopy. "But we now have new trees growing in their place, thanks to local volunteers who have nurtured saplings from Broadclyst seed." Follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook and Instagram. Drug dealer arrested after police chase jailed

A drug dealer who drove at speeds of more than 50mph through a housing estate as he tried to evade police has been jailed. Morgan Swindells, 23, of Denby Road, Barnsley, was found with 127 wraps of cocaine, more than £500 in cash and a suspected burner mobile phone when he was arrested in Athersley on 14 May. He was stopped by a police officer who recognised his car as one suspected of being involved in supplying drugs in the area, police said. Swindells admitted charges including possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday and was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison. He also admitted dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence. He was also charged with obstructing a PC but this was dismissed at court. South Yorkshire Police said he was arrested when PC Rebecca Hunt, from the Barnsley North East neighbourhood policing team, spotted a silver Renault Megane while on a routine patrol in Athersley. She activated her blue lights requesting the driver to stop, but when he carried on driving she followed him until he stopped and got out of the car. PC Hunt managed to arrest Swindells close to his car. PC Hunt said: "Drug dealing and drug use in our community is a significant issue, and is often the cause of lots of acquisitive crime. "We had received recent intelligence from the local community to suggest that this vehicle was involved in the supply of Class A drugs throughout our area. "Due to fear of repercussions, Swindells failed to stop and drove dangerously through a housing estate, reaching speeds of up to 50mph, showing a complete disregard for the safety of pedestrians and other road users. "We will continue to prioritise drug dealing in our area, and will ensure that those caught supplying illegal substances in our area are dealt with robustly."
